Before we begin
Before we get into the upgrading process, you can read up on everything here[github.com] if you want background on this. If you just want to upgrade to the newest patch then just jump to the next section!

You will need to do these patches if you want to continue playing on servers as most servers these days are running with them!

In 2019 OldUnreal was officially given rights to UT99 by Epic Games and has been pushing out patches ever since. These patches have been fixing major bugs and issues and now making things better overall for the game we have all known and loved over the years!

Unfortunately however, the Steam version of UT99 cannot be updated through Steam, so you will need to download these patches from the OldUnreal github and download each new patch as it's released and install them using the installer.
OldUnreal
So this is where you will start with the upgrading!

Go to this site OldUnreal[github.com] and download the latest release (469d as of latest edit to this guide), for your OS, obviously being Linux, Mac or Windows!

Setup is rather self explanatory and easy to do, but just in case, run the setup and make sure you choose where your Unreal Tournament directory is, which in my case is in E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Unreal Tournament (This varies depending where your Steam installation is or wherever you have the game itself installed if you didn't do it through Steam).

It will run it's install and do some basic first patch upgrades like choosing video card and such. I highly recommend using the Direct3D 9 Support. (D3D9 for short). After that you can simply click Play and enjoy the all new updated and patched UT99 with massive amounts of bug fixes and changes to improve the game! It is highly recommended to be on the latest possible version so you can join servers as majority of the still active and running servers are all running on these patches!

**EDIT NOTES**

EDIT 1: While I still recommend D3D9 over others that come officially, I have since switched over to using a DirectX 11 Renderer and have been using 4k textures and High Quality models and would recommend looking into what runs best for your computer, don't just try what I can do.

Edit 2: Updated guide, latest release is now 469d, update if you plan to still play on servers.

Yes it is. OldUnreal also patches it to work with their latest patch whenever you install it.

Interesting to know, if you can get things working and a dl link I'll add it in the guide as a viable steam deck version.

Yeah, I downloaded someone else’s game in a rar and moved it to my game directory and that actually worked, now I have the updated game with the bonus pack but i still have the dx11 issue. I should find someone’s game with that installed and try again

Sorry to hear, unfortunately it seems that's due to the steam deck then.

Well I tried installing the latest release 469, I tried installing the bonus pack 4 and I tried installing the dx10 and dx11 renderers and nothing worked, so I’ll play vanilla for now, thanks

If you're interested, I'd suggest going through all their changelogs so you can decide yourself, but I'm not sure what will work on the Steam Deck, as with all things Valve, they refuse to sell in Australia.
