Joe Camel was a famous marketing mascot for Camel cigarettes from 1987 to 1997.

In the early 1990s, to 1997, Camel was pressured from multiple public-interest groups to re-brand their mascot, after a study was released showing that children as young as six years old could recognize Camel Joe, just as consistently as Mickey Mouse, these groups claimed Camel was "targeting children" with their advertising. After multiple lawsuits, Camel settled out of court, opting to change their logo to a plain camel.
