NS 4047 is yet another engine from Norfolk Southern’s rebuilding programme. She was originally built by General Electric in 1995, and started life as C40-9 No. 8781. Interestingly NS was the only railroad to ever own and operate the C40-9 design; everyone else that had these Dash 9’s used the C40-9W variant or other similar types (e.g. C44-9W).

C40-9 No. 8781 continued in service with Norfolk Southern until 2017. In that year she was taken to NS’s workshops in Roanoke, Virginia for rebuilding. The engine was yet another one for the AC44C6M programme, which saw the engine retain her original G.E. 7FDL-16 prime mover (4,400 horsepower), as well as her old radiator and rear long-hood. Modifications came in the form of conversion to AC traction motors (as opposed to DC motors) and the replacement of her old cab and front long-hood section with a design identical to that of the ES44AC. So - in a way - the AC44C6M is a hybrid of the C40-9 (or C40-9W) and ES44AC.

The rebuilt engine - now numbered 4047 - was finished in July 2017, and sent for painting in Altoona, Pennsylvania. But the paint wasn’t fully applied when - due to a locomotive shortage - Norfolk Southern had to put AC44C6M No. 4047 into service. This meant she was running in a weird half primer/half black state, with her new cab and long-hood section still being in grey primer. Since then she has been nicknamed ‘Primer Cab’ by railfans.

In November 2018 the paintwork on 4047 was finally completed, and the engine is now running today in full Norfolk Southern black.
