Summary
Welcome to my first steam guide. To start with, this will not be a general team-building guide, or an explanation of how to get to the late game. It will be assumed you can get or have gotten many monsters available outside 5-star victories against champions and have access to enough resources to kit out a team or two.

Secondly, there will be SPOILERS GALORE ahead. Proceed at your own risk if you haven't done some of the end-game content.

Finally, the teams I offer were able to easily score consistent 5-star victories against all the elite champions. If you're just looking to get a 5-star and aren't worried about the 6th star, these little guys will get the job done. With all that said, let's jump right in!

For whom was this guide written?
For people like me, who searched for help and didn't find anything.

For people who are okay with possible spoilers.

Also, anyone who wants to find, defeat, and earn 5 or 6 stars against the elite champions of Monster Sanctuary. You will need a decent grasp of the game's mechanics and a good portion of the game completed for this to be of help. Game basics are not covered here, as there are other guides that cover the basics very well.
About Monster's We'll Be Using
First, a note about monsters and the team-building I did. I am not the most talented player in the game, nor are my teams perfectly optimized. I find monsters I like, and try to find a team that works around them. Example: Specter and Aazerach are easily my favorite monsters in the game. Frosty too, but only the light shift coloration. My point is that there are other ways of achieving these victories, and if you feel my teams and explanations have given you a good grasp of how to fight these champions, you should experiment! Have fun! Your new teams may do as well, or even better, than mine.

My purpose here is not to tell you the only way to defeat these monsters with a 6-star rating. My purpose is to provide you an option that will work. Each section has the monsters I used, and a brief description of the strategy. This game has a lot of RNG weighting the outcomes of a battle, so be patient. 6-starring champions is supposed to be hard--an achievement.

The short video below shows the equipment and skills I used most of the time. I think I may have swapped a thing or two, but if I did it should be fairly obvious (like an ultimate).

What if I don't have Spectral Toad?
If you don't have the Spectral Toad and your teams aren't working, you can still use my guide 6-star the champs. There are two steps moving forward:

  • 1. Use a substitute healer until you get the toad. Options include, but are not limited to Druid Oak, Rocky, and Ninki. All three are relatively early in the game. Vasuki is also an option, and has Taunt. Per redditor u/jjpearson, Goblin Warlock also works nicely with Mad Eye and Specter. These can work just fine to get you through the 24 champions you need for the next step.
  • 2. Beat 24 champions, becoming a Keeper Master. This allows you to get your own toad. (NOTE: I can't stress this enough--you do NOT NEED TO 5-STAR ALL CHAMPS to become Keeper Master. Defeat 24 Champions, even if it's only scraping by at 1 star, and you'll have access to ALL STARTERS via the door at the top of Keeper's Tower.)

I've been asked for substitutes for the toad on my team, which is challenging for me--he was my starter and I love his floppy jumping about. However, other healers do work. Still, I want to help so I did some testing. This was my FIRST attempt using Druid Oak instead of Spectral Toad against the Mad Lord:

https://youtu.be/NEcQviCKPhs

I'll add that exclaiming "first" attempt isn't a brag; I was genuinely surprised to come up with an alternative on the first try--especially given I did so many things sub-optimally. As you can see from the video, it worked just fine and got a 5-star win over Mad Lord. I also made a ton of play mistakes, including (but not limited to) slotting an AOE attack on my Mad Eye for a single target fight. Derp! I also forgot to give the Druid Oak my best healing gear, and didn't optimize his skills for that fight. In other words, I just kind of stumbled through the fight with a general strategy in mind.

My point is the strategies generally hold, even if only to get you to toad-land. They're most likely sufficient for 5-stars on most elite champs (and non-elite champs for that matter). To summarize, you do not need the Spectral Toad to beat the game. You only need him to 6-star the champions in the specific way I did.

As ever, I encourage you to try your own variations and builds. You may well find something amazing you like much better than what I did.
Champion: Slime King

(His Royal Fanciness)

Specter + Frosty + Spectral Toad
Our target is the elusive Slime King. You're going to head to the location in this pic:

There will be three statues and an npc with whom you need to speak. Talk to the npc, get the clue about Old Buran, and head all the way back to the old slime rancher. It's probably been a minute since you last visited the eccentric codger; do you remember him?

You'll need to defeat Buran to get him to tell you the secret. When you do, he does, and you get the key to visit the three slime statues scattered around the world. Well... good luck finding them!
...
Just kidding. This is a guide, isn't it? Here they are, circled on the maps by my beautiful MS paint skills. In no particular order, go to these locations and interact with the statues after getting the key.

Mystical Workshop

Stronghold Dungeon

Sun Palace

Got all three? Good. Now return to the three slime statues and the newly revealed path to Blob Burg. Work your way through the Burg grabbing treasure chests, and eventually the path to the king will be opened. Note you want to pick up a rainbow slime or changling for the ability to traverse small paths.

Assuming all that's done, it's time to rumble! The king slime is weak to debuffs, so I used Spectre, Spectral Toad, and Frosty to earn the 6 star. The strategy is simple: get your buffs up, and stack dots on him. Toad goes first, then Frosty, followed by Specter. You'll want them them set up to apply Chill, Burn, and Poison as quickly as possible. Barring bad luck, if you use my team you will have an easy time getting this 6 star. If you beat him, but fail the 6th star, just try again later at the keep.

Should look something like this: https://youtu.be/ITse2vtM8aw
Champion: Vodinoy
(I'a Dagon! I'a Hydra!)

Specter + Spectral Toad + Mad Eye

Vodinoy, the fish man--he hides underwater below the tides of Horizon Beach. The entrance is tiny, so you'll want to bring a rainbow slime, shapeshifter, or King Slime. We'll be heading here:
Vodinoy's attacks are physical and highly damaging. He's not resistant to fire, and burn will be your friend. I used Specter, Spectral Toad, and Mad Eye. You want agility and as many stacks of burn on him as possible, as soon as possible. This team was consistently able to get a 6-star win, and the fight should look something like this:

Vodinoy is one of three who can levitate large stones. Keep him (or another who can lift stones) with you.
Champion: Gryphonix

(Hooked on Gryphonix worked for me!)

Specter + Spectral Toad + Mad Eye

A glorious beast, with improved mount as an exploration ability! You'll need a monster that can levitate heavy rocks (Vodinoy, Vertraag, or Diavola). Head here, in the molten depths:

Ahh, an earth weakness, and deadly fire attacks. I once again found my team of Specter, Spectral Toad, and Mad Eye to be indispensable. Poison is more effective than usual here, so try to get max stacks ASAP.

The fight should end up looking like this:

https://youtu.be/jmz1sj_ksIw
Champion: Mad Lord

(Sight Beyond Sight!)

Specter + Spectral Toad + Mad Eye

Not much need to describe where to find this bad boy, if you've done the main story. If not, just keep bashing the alchemists and proceed to the Abandoned Tower. At the very top, you'll fight the leader of the alchemists and. finally, the Mad Lord itself.

It has a large health pool and resistance to debuffs, but is weak to both physical and magic. If you use my team, you'll likely get a 5 or 6 star victory on your first try. If not, just visit him again later at the keep for round 2. A bleed team is also very effective, if you'd rather--bleed isn't a debuff, so the damage is not affected by Mad Lord's debuff resistance.

Once you've beaten Mad Lord, you'll have access to several things; spectral vision, the Mad Lord champion fight at the tower, and the Alchemist hints at the Stronghold Dungeon crystal waypoint.

https://youtu.be/zOzc7rpHw2Q
Champion: Aazerach

(Zombie Groudon)

Specter + Spectral Toad + Frosty

This champion only becomes available after defeating Mad Lord and Alchemist Trevisan moves to the Stronghold Dungeon crystal waypoint. Talk to Trevisan, enjoy the bits of story, and head west with the item he gives you.

Ahh, Aazerach; one of my favorites to be on my team, and one of my least favorites to fight. He steals your buffs, blinds you, stacks evasion on himself... nearly every aggravating mechanic packed on one champ. In short, this fight will be heavily influenced by RNG. Chill (Congeal) and Poison are very effective, so get them up to max stacks asap. It doesn't have to be a perfect run to get the 6-stars, as you can see in my video--the last round, my Specter missed most of his hits and I still got the teal star anyway.

Keep trying and you'll get it. If RNG is unkind early, feel free to forfeit and restart. It will save you a lot of time.

Champion: Diavola
Feed me, Seymour!

Specter + Spectral Toad + Mad Eye
Once you have a monster with the Secret Vision overworld ability, return to the Sun Palace and climb to the northeast. You'll find some ethereal platforms to climb, leading to our next champion.

Diavola likes to clear your debuffs, so you would think a debuff strategy wouldn't work on him. I decided to try overwhelming his ability to clear debuffs and hammering his weakness to fire. It works! Make sure these three are specced to do max dot and fire damage, and you should score a 6-star with a couple tries.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPQWs2d2WOY
Champion: Vertraag

(Time Freeza)

Specter + Aazeroch + Spectral Toad

Vertraag is kind of a pain to hit 6-stars. I suppose we wouldn't want the god of time to be easy, though, right? To start, we've got to get to him. Head to the Mystical Workshop and climb to the top, in the room with a clock and two levers. There are two solutions to this puzzle--9:00 and 11:05. The first gets you treasure, the latter a doorway to Vertraag. You can do them in either order.

For teams, we're mixing it up a bit and using Specter, Aazeroch, and Spectral Toad. For this reason, I recommend going and at least clearing 5 star on Aazeroch first, so you can use it for this fight. Vertraag is beefy, and gains buffs easily and in large quantities. It's important to keep his certain buffs (Spellshield) cleared, and keeping pressure on with large neutral hits. It's going to be a slugfest, and you'll need some big crits from our boy, Specter.

Keep at it 'till you get that sweet, sweet starry goodness.

@ProgenitorX to 5-star Asura (maybe 6-star tho i havent tried for 6-star yet) a good chill team is L or D-Ice blob, L-Frosty, and D-Imori. You should be able to apply 6 or more chill and 2 of most other debuffs. I usually start with Lvl 2 Ice Shield on Ice blob and Frosty to stack chill fast. May not work for a 6star but it can be a good team in general.

How did you get two Shield Generators? I can only find the one sold by the golem in the workshop.

Great guide. I've been struggling with getting 5 stars on 4 of these champs, so I guess it's time to spec up a mad eye and a specter!

Thanks, and I probably will since I've been getting so many questions about it. I'll try to get it done sometime soon!

Last night I added a section on not having the spectral toad that should be helpful, I think.
