Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles)

Description
Shulk took a wrong portal and ended up in DST! Thankfully, he's not a stranger to worldhopping, and comes prepared with unique abilities, configurable stats, custom voice (a violin), and 3000+ lines of dialogue.

Stats & Perks
Health: 100 | Hunger: 150 | Sanity: 175

Shulk is an engineer specializing in Weapon Development. He enters the Constant with crafting knowledge for all weapons that would normally require a science or alchemy engine.

While Shulk's good at making weapons, he isn't the strongest fighter himself. He has very low max health and his attacks are 20% weaker than most other characters.

As heir to the Monado, Shulk can see visions of the future when he is attacked. The chance of a vision occurring scales off of his health, starting at 5% at max health and 30% at no health. When a vision occurs, Shulk's eyes glow blue and he will automatically dodge all incoming attacks for 10 seconds.

Shulk has no sense of taste so food doesn't do much for him. He'll gain the regular hunger value, but only 50% sanity and health values. He also hates vegetables and will gain 0 hunger or health when eating them. However, since vegetables remind him of his friends back home, he will instead gain the regular sanity value.

Unlike most characters, Shulk differentiates between fruit and vegetables. This allows him to gain health and hunger from things like berries. If it counts as a fruit in the crock pot[dontstarve.fandom.com] or isn't an obvious vegetable (like waffles and trail mix), Shulk will be able to eat it.

Monado
Shulk spawns in with one item: the Monado.

-Unbreakable
-Deals 40 damage (when taking Shulk's damage weakness into account)
-Small sanity drain
-Slightly longer range than spear

The Monado is very choosy about its wielder. Shulk is the only character who can use it without harm; all other characters will lose 10 health and immediately drop it.

The Monado has a "talent gauge" (aka durability) that increases by 2% every time the Monado attacks an enemy mob or 1% when attacking a prey animal. When the gauge is at 100%, Shulk can right click it while equipped to Activate the Monado, expelling the talent gauge and granting a unique buff depending on which Monado Art was chosen.

Monado Arts
If you've played Smash, you're already somewhat familiar with how this works. Shulk has access to four Arts: Buster, Enchant, Shield, and Speed, and can cycle through each Art by pressing "Z."

Selecting a Monado Art doesn't do anything by itself. Shulk has to cycle to the desired Art and then Activate the Monado when its gauge is at 100%.
While it's technically possible to have multiple Arts active the same time, this can be rather difficult to accomplish by default. Using the same Art twice will not stack the buff, but will instead reset the Art's timer.

Activating the Monado will drain Shulk's hunger and sanity by 20.

Monado Buster
-Increases damage dealt by 100% for 20 seconds
-Drains 100% of the talent gauge
-Only affects Shulk

Monado Enchant
-Increases damage dealt by 30% for 40 seconds
-Drains 50% of the talent gauge
-Affects Shulk, nearby players, and allied creatures

Monado Shield
-Increases damage reduction by 50% for 30 seconds (stacks with equipped armor)
-Drains 50% of the talent gauge
-Affects Shulk, nearby players, and allied creatures

Monado Speed
-Increases speed by 20% for 60 seconds
-Drains 75% of the talent gauge
-Affects Shulk, nearby players, and allied creatures

Bugs/Feedback
If you encounter anything not working as expected, please report it so I can fix it! If the game crashes, please provide the client_log.txt or server_log.txt file as well.
I've been testing him myself for a while, but I'm only one person and I've likely missed a few things.

@That Boi, Roy! Shulk has no way to obtain planar damage currently, but it is on my list of things to do (along with many other things that shulk needs reworked lol)

Hi, I really love this mod and the ways you can configure it! Very well made and its maybe my favorite character mod as it feels the most balanced compared to most. Was wondering if there would be any updates to help with planar damage? Im revisiting the game after a long while and Im aware it exists but not sure if theres any way of achieving it within this mod?

Pretty cool mod you should update this to have his Future redeemed design or you could do the other outfits from xenoblade 1 you did pretty good maybe you could put in monado rage which makes enemies target shulk for a bit like how it is in 3 you should also rename shield to armor since monado armor is the one that reduces damage in xenoblade 1 not shield shield is the one that blocks any attack for a bit maybe you could rework shield into blocking 1 attack or a few for a while then turn armor into shield I also thought about how you could put Monado eater in something like when attacking an enemy shulk gains hunger and a little bit of hp

Yeah that’s a very valid point. Maybe gems could do something else or nothing. Thank you for spending your time to answer me I really appreciate it. Maybe there could be a benefit to Shulk fighting in a team where there could be a chain link after a while that would increase damage. Thank you though again I appreciate your mods.

@diyar Thank you for the suggestions! They are certainly ones I will consider for a future rework.
Huh, I hadn't considered gem crafting as a mechanic for Shulk, tbh... It's an interesting concept, but I'm not sure how I feel about using them to enchant his Monado (and other weapons, and armor), even though that is how it works in XBC. I don't want his mod to feel too similar to Cloud's.

Shulk's visions could be a single evasion and be more animated. It could be more likely to occur and maybe reworked. Shulk could also craft items at a slightly faster rate and maybe have access to higher Science Tiers. The downsides could be that he does less damage like you implemented and maybe increases the sanity drain of the Monado and every time a vision occurs some sanity could decrease. The vegetable downside could maybe instead provide very little hunger and then less sanity as it does now. His default stats are fine and maybe he could be more vulnerable to temperature.

I appreciate your work so thank you these are suggestions after all.

Buster could be a single attack that does extra damage against clockworks. Enchant could boost damage for him and his allies. Shield could prevent Shulk or his allies from taking damage from attacks that would otherwise kill them. Speed could add a chance of evasion with the speed boost. Purge could be an attack that could stun the enemy and remove planar defence. Armour could grant damage reduction. A cyclone could be an AOE attack. Eater could be an attack that removes any planar defence.

I'm such a big fan of this mod and all the others, but I noticed the difference in additions of the different character mods compared to Shulk. I was wondering if it would be possible for me could give some suggestions. I appreciate all the work you put into these mods and I feel like they are the best I have seen.

Shulk could be able to upgrade the Monado to II and III which could increase damage, range and the amount of Arts Shulk has access to. Shulk could have a menu for his arts like in Smash.

Shulk could have the arts from his game. Shulk could collect Ether crystals from rocks and boulders and that kind of stuff and could collect Ether cylinders from enemies kind of like how Cloud does with your mod and that could be used to craft gems at an Ether Furnace or be able to use the gems from DST as gems he could put in his Monado like Walter with his slingshot.

Ah, yeah, I kinda do that Monado upgrade thing myself! When I reach certain points in the game's progression, such as defeating the ancient guardian, I go into his configs and buff damage and art durations slightly, stuff like that, so I'm glad you also share that idea!
miz  [author] May 16, 2024 @ 1:28pm
@Inigoღ Mmmmmmm, I confess, I really haven't paid much attention to the planar damage at all, so I don't have many ideas myself on how to balance it.
My original idea for the Monado's rework would be for it to be upgradable (I, II, and possibly III) which gives him increased damage at each upgrade (and other things, idk), but I know that isn't a perfect solution since many mobs resist physical damage now... Giving one of the upper upgrades planar damage might be an OK solution for that. I'm not sure if there's any easily accessible form of a "planar damage multiplier" like physical damage currently has, so I'll have to look into it for Buster/Enchant.

Ohh, Monado Purge removing planar defense would be a great solution, thank you for the suggestion! I am not sure how difficult it will be to implement, but I'll look into it when I get the time to work on Shulk's rework.
