General Strategy
Travel
  • Pack animals can be mounted to reduce the sanity cost of traveling at the expense of inventory space. Fast mounts lower the sanity cost of travel the most, followed by medium mounts, then slow mounts.

  • Moving onto a hill hex costs 15 sanity, but walking from one hill hex to the next is no more costly than traveling across flat ground. Choose your path wisely.

  • Look for patterns. Many landmarks are associated with particular types of terrain. Once you learn to recognize these patterns you can identify landmarks without approaching them, allowing you to plan your route more carefully.

Combat
  • You do not need bullets in your inventory in order to use a gun, or vice versa. Bullets simply provide extra attack dice, while guns can be used to form unique and powerful dice combos.

  • Mount pack animals before attacking. Only mounts which are currently being ridden participate in combat (unless promoted by Alexandra David-Neel).

  • Always recruit Tim Timster if he appears at the dock in London. He comes with an extra companion (a dog named Luis) who does not take up a character slot but provides a combat die. If you don't want to keep Tim Timster, you can dismiss him immediately and Luis will remain with the party.

Collecting and Trading
  • The items offered for sale at the dock in London vary with each expedition; don't count on certain items being available.

  • Many items are valued differently in expedition locations than in London. When trading with the locals, you can mouse over an item to see how much they over/undervalue it, (e.g. whisky is worth +300% at polar stations so you can trade it for three times its value). In general treasures are more highly valued in London while hunting trophies are better traded locally.

  • Items with a feather next to them are weightless. They take up no space in your inventory and don't count towards the hot air balloon's carrying capacity should you need to abort the expedition. This makes them both a great way to stockpile trading value and a good "insurance policy" should things go south.

  • Treasures left in the store room of a mission or polar station will be shipped back to London free of charge if you don't return to collect them. If the building in which your items are stashed is destroyed by a natural disaster your goods will be lost, so think carefully before looting any nearby shrines.

  • Mummies are best stashed in storage rooms or on the ship if you're playing on Expedition difficulty or above. Natives may get testy if you bring them into native villages and they have a nasty habit of walking off when you rest in the open.

Staying Alive
  • Visiting temples is always worthwhile. Drinking from the chalice costs no standing and always results in a positive outcome.

  • Coca leaves and whiskey grant sanity but can afflict your human companions with ailments. It's safer to trade them for shelter or other sanity items at villages and missions.

  • Most injuries will quickly heal on their own, so don't bother using healing items unless a wound becomes infected. Injuries are automatically healed between expeditions.

  • Red mushrooms may produce ailments in human companions; use medical kits for injured human companions whenever possible and save the cheaper red mushrooms for animals.

  • Resting outdoors is free but doing so when at low health often causes your human companions to gain ailments. Restore a bit of sanity before resting to minimize the chances of adverse events.

Unlocking Achievements
  • Most achievements can be unlocked on Tourist Trip difficulty; some do not even require you to complete the expedition.

  • Complete Curious Explorer before attempting other achievements. Often an achievement which appears daunting is quite easy with the right starting explorer (e.g. Triple trouble, Beyond the Gate).

  • If you come across a fungal shrine (Corrupted King) or find a golden eggplant when playing on Expedition Difficulty or above (A Tribute to Yama) it's best to drop everything and focus on getting these achievements.

  • If you're struggling with a particular achievement or just trying to complete all of the achievements in the shortest time possible, farming tome pages with Aleister Crowley's necronomicon is a reliable (though extremely tedious) way to cheese most strategy-based achievements (see Triple trouble).
Curious Explorer
Unlock 13 explorers.

Explorers
Mary Kingsley
Reach the Golden Pyramid in Expedition 3.
Amelia Earhart
Complete a game, ending in 1st place.

If playing on Tourist Trip difficulty, focus on reaching the Golden Pyramid before anyone else. The fame bonus for finishing first is generally enough to offset the fame gained by tardier explorers donating treasures to the museum.
Nikola Tesla
Blow up a mountain with dynamite.

Dynamite can be purchased at the docks in London. Items available at the docks vary so if it's not available, check back after the next expedition.
Alexandra David-Neel
Complete a game in 3rd place or higher with a dinosaur in your trek.

Dinosaurs can be recruited from native villages in prehistoric worlds (Expedition 6). Prehistoric worlds also contain raptor nests, in which raptor eggs can be found. If a raptor egg is kept in the party's inventory long enough, it will hatch into a juvenile raptor which occupies an inventory slot. If kept in the inventory, it will eventually mature into a full-sized companion and you will have the option to add it to your party.
Marcus Garvey
Complete the game in 3rd place or higher, and with two fully-promoted companions.

Companions are promoted using exploration points (shown in the star at the top right of the screen). Exploration points are earned by discovering landmarks (shrines, villages, stone circles, etc.) or using tome pages of wisdom. Each companion can be promoted three times: the first promotion costs one point, the second costs two, and the third costs three.
Dion Fortune
Abandon everything (Expedition difficulty).

If you raise your standing to at least 8 in World 4 or later then rest in a native village, you may get the option to abandon the expedition and remain with the tribe. It may take several nights for this option to appear, so it's best to play as Richard Francis Burton; his Polyglot perk allows him to rest in native villages without losing standing. Choosing to stay in the village will end your current game.

See A good heart is hard to find for a list of actions which affect your standing.
Frederick Courtney Selous
Combat and defeat an enemy tiger (Expedition difficulty).

Tigers are found in dryland, jungle, and desert worlds. Nikola Tesla is a good early-game combat explorer but any explorer should be up to the task provided their party has a good variety of dice.
Freya Stark
Complete the game in 3rd place or higher without attacking any enemy in combat (Expedition difficulty).

Mary Kingsley is a good explorer for this achievement. Between Kingsley's pacifist perk and her native warrior's stealth perk, you will likely be able to avoid combat altogether and unlock Freya Stark and Ada Lovelace in one go. Focus on trading and digging for treasure and avoid excessive looting lest you be pursued by angry natives.
H.P Lovecraft
Find the Necronomicon and use it (Expedition difficulty).

The Necronomicon is a rare treasure item. It can be found randomly when looting shrines or digging up treasures. Upon use, the book may produce 1-3 tome pages, generate a portal, or do nothing. Using the Necronomicon costs 70 sanity for most explorers (35 sanity for Lovecraft, Feihong, Rasputin, and Kingsley). If using the Necronomicon causes you to drop below 0 sanity, the book will combust.
Isabella Bird
Find an ancient mummy (Expedition difficulty).

Mummies can be found in caves and in desert world tombs. They are highly valued by the museum in London. They are best stashed in storage rooms or on the ship if you're playing on Expedition difficulty or above as they have a nasty habit of walking off when you rest in the open and natives may get testy if you bring them into villages
Harriet Tubman
Finish a single expedition with three natives in your trek (Expedition difficulty).

Natives are afflicted with the homesickness ailment and will hesitate to follow you back to London. To convince them to accompany you, you will have to either roll a blue "mind" support die at the end of the expedition or max out their loyalty by gifting them native trinkets. Thankfully there's a loophole: if you return to the ship and abandon the expedition, any natives in your party will accompany you.

You will need to maintain +2 standing in order to recruit natives or play as Grigori Rasputin, who can recruit followers regardless of his standing. The Charismatic perk only works in London and does not allow you to recruit multiple natives from a single village.
Aleister Crowley
Finish every expedition in a game with positive Standing, ending in 3rd place or higher (Expedition difficulty).

See A good heart is hard to find for a list of actions which affect standing. Note that you only have to finish the expedition with positive standing. You can hunt and pillage to your heart's content and redeem yourself at the end of the expedition with a few generous gifts. Take care not to let your standing drop below -9, as this prevents you from entering villages.

Alternatively you can avoid angering the natives entirely and unlock Crowley and A good heart is hard to find) in a single go.
Ada Lovelace
Complete a game without ever entering into combat (Expedition difficulty).

Fireworks can be used to prevent enemies from aggro-ing. If an enemy does aggro, a horn flute can put it to sleep. Resting until the enemy is pacified is also an option as enemies only attack when you're moving (mouse over the enemy to see how much longer it will be aggro-ed.) Running should be a last resort.

Avoid entering tombs or robbing raptor nests. If you're playing on Expedition difficulty or above, a mummy carried in the inventory may come alive and attack while the party is resting; this does not seem to qualify as combat for the purposes of the achievement.
Legendary
It's time to headbutt a raptor! Ensure that your party has at least one red die and one blue die before Expedition 6, then head to a prehistoric world and bonk the daylights out of one of those sneaky saurians!

Snarfrattle must die
Kill the legendary hyena.

Wait until a one-armed hunter approaches you at the dock and tasks you with killing Snarfrattle. Snarfrattle is always accompanied by 2-3 normal hyenas. While Snarfrattle is significantly stronger than a regular hyena, it's not a particularly challenging fight and a well-balanced party should have no difficulty unlocking the achievement.

Killing the legendary hyena will earn you the Pelt of Snarfrattle. Do not sell it or gift it to the museum, as this will cause you to fail the quest. The one-armed hunter will find you at the docks before your next voyage and buy it off of you for 80-120 gold.
There is no weak spot!
Kill a giant crab.

"That's the best crab I ever cooked." "We'd have been more impressed, Mr. Spilett, if you'd have put it in the pot by yourself." - Jules Verne's Mysterious Island (1961)

Giant crabs are found in prehistoric worlds, late-game desert worlds, and portal worlds. They are easy to find, but taking one down is challenge as they have a 25 hitpoints, roll four attack dice each turn, and can perform group attacks. Don't attempt this fight unless you have a full, fully-promoted party with some solid dice combos.

Explorers
Frederick Courtney Selous is a good choice for this achievement as his starting items, companions, and perk are all combat-focused. His hunting rifle can be combined with two blue perception dice for an impressive +12 attack (+14 with the Gun Expert perk!). The hunting rifle die only has a 50/50 chance of attacking on each roll but because Selous gets an extra roll, it has a 15/16 chance of attacking each round.

Alexandra David-Neel's animal companions are extremely effective in combat and don't rely on dice combos. While pack animals can be used in combat, you'll likely come across better options. Your best bet is to find a beastmaster. Stock up on animal teeth during early expeditions, and prioritize travel to jungle, arctic, and prehistoric worlds. Be sure to reserve some exploration points for late-game party additions.

Strategy
  • Prioritize acquiring defense and support dice over attack dice, as attack dice can be replaced by weapons and bullets.

  • Avoid recruiting missionaries, as they do not gain dice when promoted.

  • Despite being an "extra" character, Tim Timster's dog Luis can be promoted by David-Neel. He will remain with the party even if Timster is dismissed and is surprisingly effective in combat when fully promoted.

  • Always take the Bullet Hoarder perk if it becomes available. Unlike regular bullets, the bullets produced by this perk do not take up any inventory space.

  • If you aren't counting on finishing the expedition consider purchasing a tome of abomination or two and transforming less useful party members just before you enter combat.
Unchained
This achievement is unlocked by liberating a slaver camp. These can be found in prehistoric worlds. A slaver camp contains:
  • 1 slave master (12 health, one whip die, one attack die)
  • 2-3 slaver minions (8 health, one pistol die, one defense die)
  • 1 hyena (6 health, one attack die)
The slave master's whip is a unique weapon that can stun enemies; ensure that your party has plenty of dice before attempting this fight.

For tips on putting together a combat-proficient party, see There is no weak spot. Successfully defeating a slaver camp will earn you the achievement, a random assortment of goods, and +5 standing. If you have an empty slot in your party, you may also gain a new party member.
Arachnophobia
Kill 20 giant spiders.

Giant spiders spawn when you loot a shrine surrounded by fungal growth. When the treasure is removed, the fungus will spread and spiders will spawn from the affected area and pursue the player (the fungus itself is not harmful). Spider dens containing 2-3 spiders will also spawn in nearby caves. Clearing a spider den occasionally transports the player to a corrupted world (see Corrupted king).
Party Train
Have at least 3 members of your trek be alcoholics.

Alcoholic trek members won't stick around long if their habit isn't indulged, so it's best to start with three sober human party members and stockpile a lot of whisky before attempting this achievement.

Once you're ready, let the party begin! Whisky can be used even if your sanity is maxed out but your party members seem to be more prone to alcoholism when sanity is low. If you run dry, missions will sometimes offer whisky to parties who spend the night.

If you plan to continue the expedition, consider acquiring some green mushrooms before attempting this achievement. If one of your alcoholic companions abandons you and you want them back, you can rest outside or at your ship until they eventually rejoin you. They'll still be an alcoholic but their loyalty will be reset to two hearts.
Giant giant chicken dinner
Kill 10 giant birds.

"I wonder how many minutes it would take to cook in a slow oven." - Mysterious Island (1961)

Giant birds are found in Prehistoric worlds (always available in Expedition 6) on all difficulty levels. They may also appear in desert and jungle worlds on Expedition difficulty and above. Ensure that you have a full party with a variety of dice, stockpile some first aid kits, and have at it!

Strangely the feathers aren't weightless but they do make for good trophies and trade fodder. Each bird also drops a generous five meat.
Interdimensional traveler
Travel through 20 portals.

Portals can be found in expedition worlds when playing on Expedition or Certain Death difficulty. A player can also enter a portal world by using a tome page of portal traversal. These can be found as loot, acquired through trades, or generated using a Necronomicon. An easy (if tedious) way to spam this achievement is to start as H.P Lovecraft and alternate between farming tome pages with the Necronomicon and resting at the ship (see Triple Trouble for more on this strategy).

Generated portal worlds remain open for 20-30 days. After that time has elapsed, the player is returned to the main expedition world, unless you have a metal cube in your inventory, in which case the cube is consumed and the timer resets (see Beyond the Gate. To leave the portal world early, simply go back through the portal from which you emerged or use a second Tome of Portal Traversal. Time still passes in the main world while the player is exploring the portal world; however looting shrines in portal worlds does not affect standing in the main world.
Fight fire with fire
Blow up an active volcano with dynamite.

Dynamite can be purchased at the docks in London and occasionally found in expedition worlds. For the achievement to unlock, the volcano must be active; active volcanoes contain lava and will periodically erupt, setting fire to nearby hexes. Inactive volcanoes contain no lava and never erupt. Inactive volcanoes will never become active (or vice versa).
Hungry heart
Wait for the dock quest in which a woman approaches you and asks you to find her missing husband (this generally occurs before Expedition 4). Find the man and cure his cannibalism by giving him a green mushroom or having him cleansed at a shaman hut. Return to London and reunite the spouses to unlock the achievement.

Dinotopia
Recruit five dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs can be recruited from native villages in prehistoric worlds (always available in Expedition 6). Prehistoric worlds also feature raptor nests, which often contain eggs. If kept in the inventory long enough, a raptor egg will hatch. Keep the hatchling in the inventory until it is fully grown and you will have the option to add it to your party. Keep in mind that if you choose to release it, it will continue to roam the world and will attack if aggro-ed.

NOTE: The in-game achievement requires you to recruit 20 dinosaurs but the Steam achievement only requires five.
Bring shovels!
Find and dig up 10 treasures using treasure maps.

Treasure maps can be acquired by traders in expedition worlds and through dock quests. To view the map, mouse over it in the inventory bar.

To dig up a treasure, simply acquire a shovel, stand on the tile indicated on the map, and select the shovel in your inventory bar. The map does not disappear or depreciate after the treasure has been dug up. It will be removed from your inventory at the end of the expedition, so it's best to trade it away after you've used it.
Schroedingers Box
But what happened to the cat?

Wait for the dock quest in which a scientist begs you to retrieve a buried box. Accept the quest and he will give you a map. Ensure that you have at least one shovel in your inventory. Mouse over the map in your inventory bar to view it. Stand on the tile indicated by the map, then select the shovel. Select the box to open it and unlock the achievement (best not to do this if you plan to continue the current game).

If you fail to find the box during the expedition, the map will disappear from your inventory and you will lose 50 fame. If you succeed and do not use the box during the expedition, you will have to relinquish it when you return to London. The box cannot be sold, donated, or carried between expeditions.
What lies beneath
This achievement is unlocked by finding a shrine when blowing up a mountain with a carved face. Not all carved mountains conceal a shrine. Blowing up a carved mountain costs no more standing than blowing up a regular mountain (-1).
Made for battle
"What's that?" "I don't know but I'm glad it's on our side." - He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

This achievement is unlocked by purchasing the battle tiger from a beastmaster for 15 animal teeth. Beastmasters can occasionally be found in villages in jungle, polar, and prehistoric worlds but the battle tiger only seems to appear in prehistoric worlds.
Corrupted king
Looting a shrine surrounded by fungal growth will cause the fungus to spread across the region and spawn spiders which will pursue the player (the fungus itself is not harmful). Spider dens containing 2-3 spiders will also spawn in nearby caves. Clearing a spider den occasionally transports the player to a corrupted portal world (per the Curious Expedition wiki this is a 4.76% chance).

The corrupted world contains a single altar in which the Blood Crown can be found. You do not need to make a sacrifice to the altar. Taking the crown will teleport the party back to the main expedition world.

NOTE: Older versions of the game contained a tome page of unholy travels which transported the party to a corrupted world. This item does not appear in the current version of the game.
Breeder
Hatch 10 eggs.

Giant tortoise eggs are occasionally found in elephant graveyards in jungle worlds. Raptor eggs are found in raptor nests in prehistoric worlds. After being carried in the inventory for a short time, both eggs will turn into hatchlings which occupy an inventory slot. If you leave the hatchling in your inventory long enough it will grow into full-sized companion animal. Because they do not count as party members until they are fully grown, eggs can be hatched even if your party is full. You do not need to add the fully-grown animal to your party for the hatching to count towards the achievement. If you release an adult raptor, it will continue to roam the area and may attack your party if aggro-ed. A released tortoise will disappear.

The secret explorer Sound of Mystery (7319) starts with both types of eggs in his inventory (see Secret Session).
Walrus hunter
Giant walruses can be found in arctic worlds on all difficulty levels. On Expedition Difficulty or above, they will spawn in groups of 2-3. A trio of walruses can be an expedition-ending threat. For general combat tips, see There is no weak spot!

Roald Amundsen is a good walrus hunter as he starts with the Arctic Explorer perk, reducing the sanity cost of trekking across snow. His two huskies have decent attacks but his party lacks red dice which can make it difficult to form effective dice combos. It's best to recruit a companion with red dice or purchase a weapon before tangling with the local wildlife. As each walrus drops six meat, a cook makes foran excellent addition to your party. Depending on their level, they can produce cooked meat worth 2-15 sanity, amounting to 12-90 sanity per slain walrus. The British soldier, by comparison, provides only 10-25 sanity per walrus.

Don't forget to search every cave you come across (see Cold Companion).
Out of the way!
Blow up 50 mountains.

Dynamite can be purchased at the dock in London and occasionally in expedition worlds. Nikola Tesla and Aleister Crowly start with 5 and 6 dynamite, respectively. Blowing up a mountain results in a loss of 1 standing, so prepare to complete this achievement piecemeal or face a horde of angry natives!

Blowing up a magnetic mountain (blue-green, sparkly) on Normal or Certain Death difficulty can prevent it from interfering with the compass. Blowing up a mountain with a face carved into it may reveal a temple (See What lies beneath!)
Art collector
Create 50 paintings.

Artists can be recruited at the docks in London and will bring three blank canvases with them upon joining your party. Additional canvases can be purchased at the docks between expeditions. Artists can paint shrines and camp sites while exploring and create portraits of villagers while resting in native villages. Painting does not disturb shrines, incurs no standing cost, and does not take up any time. An angry artist will refuse to paint. Multiple paintings stack into a single inventory slot.

Promoted artists produce more valuable paintings (up to 30 funds/50 fame). Paintings are highly valued by natives (+266% for landscapes / +500% for portraits).

The explorer Johan Huizinga starts with an artist in his party.
Secret Session
To unlock this achievement, complete a full game on any difficulty with a secret explorer. Secret explorers were created to commemorate those who donated to the original Kickstarter campaign or otherwise contributed to the game. Each secret explorer is unlocked by inputting a four-digit code. The codes are the same for both console and PC but the input method varies.

PC: Go to the explorer selection page, press Esc to access the settings menu, then type the four-digit code to unlock the associated explorer. No numbers will appear on your screen but the secret explorer will now be available in the character selection menu.

PS4/Xbox/Nintendo Switch: Go to the explorer selection page, access the settings menu, then enter the same code using the D-Pad; the ↑ key increases the number while the → key moves you to the next number slot (no numbers will appear on your screen). E.g. if you wanted to input the code '1-2-3-4' you would enter: ↑→↑↑→↑↑↑→↑↑↑↑→.

A good heart is hard to find
Finish a full game without your standing ever dropping below 0.

Who doesn't love a good Flannery O'Connor reference?

This achievement can be unlocked in Tourist Trip mode. You don't have to finish first, so focus on staying alive and finding the pyramid. Stock up on sanity items, stay close to rest sites, and consider purchasing a tent in London. Try to rest in native villages only when your standing is high or as a last resort. Try to avoid fights and flee if attacked, as killing animals decreases your standing. Even if you didn't attack first, you will still incur the penalty (the natives don't care who started it!)

Richard Francis Burton is a good starting explorer as he has the Polyglot perk and can rest in native villages without decreasing his standing. He is also accompanied by a native explorer with the Good Reputation perk, which increases the party's initial standing in each new World. Note that the polyglot perk only omits the base standing cost of resting in villages; it does not protect against loss of standing from random events (failing a dice role during a village ceremony, a companion saying/doing something offensive, etc.). Avoid recruiting companions with the racist, paranoid, or kleptomaniac ailments.

Actions which decrease your standing:
  • Looting shrines (-3 standing, even if a metal cube is used).

  • Killing animals (-1 standing) - There is no standing penalty for butchering your own animals, having a hunting dog or party member bring you meat, or defending a native from an animal. Mummies, yetis, abominations, and hyenas owned by slavers also seem to be fair game.

  • Blowing up a mountain (-1 standing)

  • Stealing offerings from a stone statue (-2 standing)

  • Attempting to steal a stone idol from a village (-1 standing if you succeed, -3 if you fail)

  • Looting a (supposedly abandoned) camp in an arctic world

  • Inspecting a slaver camp's captives (-2 standing) or trading with a slaver camp (-3 standing)

  • Resting in a native village during a marriage ceremony and leaving before the ceremony concludes (-2 standing; unfortunately you'll still lose the usual -2 standing per night for staying unless you're playing as Burton, so there's really no winning here).

Random events which decrease your standing:
  • When staying in a native village you may be invited to take part in a maturation ritual. Refusing or failing a dice roll will cause the villagers to lose respect for you (-1 standing).

  • When staying in a native village, a racist, paranoid, or kleptomaniac companion may offend the villagers (-1 standing)

  • When staying in a native village, a child with a rash may approach and attempt to hug you. Refusing will result in a loss of standing (-1 standing).

  • When staying in a native village you may be offered alcohol or questionable meat (*cough* long pork *cough*); refusing will upset the villagers (-1 standing).

  • Having a mummy in your inventory when resting in a native village may cause the villagers to demand custody of it. Refusing to surrender it will upset them (-2 standing).

Actions which increase your standing:
  • Completing certain quests (all Expedition 1 quests, killing Lt. Konrad) (+2 standing)

  • Gifting items of value to a native village, or providing them with an advantageous trade. (You cannot raise your standing above 10 by trading.)

  • Choosing the Good Reputation perk after an expedition (start with +4 standing each expedition)

  • Having a companion with the Good Reputation perk (start with +1 standing each expedition)

  • Having a companion blessed with a Holy Marking at a temple (start with +3 standing each expedition).

  • Liberating a slaver camp (+5 standing)

Random events which increase your standing:
  • While resting in a village, you may be asked whether local life is superior to that in London; answering that local life is superior will increase your standing (+2 standing).

  • When resting in a native village, you may be offered alcohol in a coconut shell; drinking with the natives will slightly increase your standing (+1 standing).

  • When resting in the open your party may discover an injured native. Giving them a red mushroom or a first aid kit will increase your standing (+2 standing).

Actions which seem like they might affect standing but don't:
  • Recruiting natives from villages

  • Interacting with a stone circle (one of your party members may express concern about offending the natives, but they don't seem to mind)

  • Entering and drinking from a temple

  • Digging up treasure

  • Having a pyromaniac companion set fire to the landscape

  • Refusing the natives' request to butcher one of your animals

  • Refusing to aid natives or avenge native ghosts when resting outdoors
Crocodile Dundee
Kill 20 crocodiles.

Crocodiles are most commonly found when playing on Expedition difficulty or above. They tend to appear near swamp hexes. Looting an abandoned campsite in a swampy area or rushing to the defense of an imperiled native may trigger a crocodile attack.

With 18 hitpoints and two six-sided attack dice, the crocodile is one of the stronger enemies in the game. Ensure that you have a combat-proficient party before tangling with one. For general combat tips, see There is no weak spot!
Cold Companion
Yeti or not, here I come!

This achievement is achieved by recruiting a yeti. Yetis are rarely found in caves in arctic worlds when playing on Expedition or Certain Death difficulty. Killing one will yield a rare hunting trophy (this item is not necessary to unlock the A collector of sorts achievement).

You will not need to stock up on torches as the yeti will always appear at the entrance of the cave. Upon meeting one, you can choose to offer it a gift, fight it, or do nothing; the latter two options will cause it to attack you immediately. If you choose to offer a gift, you will be able to select from among 2-3 items in your inventory or improvise by rolling a blue die + a green die. If a suitable gift is offered or you improvise successfully, the yeti will join your party. If not, it will attack. The yeti seems to prefer edible items.

Roald Amundsen is a good choice for the aspiring yeti-hunter as he starts with the Arctic Explorer perk, reducing the sanity cost of trekking across snow. His party also starts with blue and green dice, increasing your chances of befriending the yeti should you need to improvise.

Beyond the gate
Stay inside a portal world for 100 days.

Start as H.P Lovecraft. Stock up on sanity items or purchase a tent (if you don't plan to explore inside the portal you can make do with a tome page of springs creation). When you begin the next expedition, use the Necronomicon until you acquire a tome page of Portal Traversal. Between uses of the Necronomicon, rest at the ship to restore sanity. Each use of the Necronomicon costs 35 sanity. Do not use the Necronomicon if it will bring your sanity below 0, as this will cause it to combust.

After you acquire a tome page of Portal Traversal, rest up to full sanity and use the page to enter a portal world. Portal worlds normally remain open for 20-30 days before returning the player to the main world; however a metal cube can be consumed to maintain the portal world for an additional 20-30 days. As Lovecraft starts with three cubes in his inventory, he can easily remain in a portal world for 100+ days. A cube will be consumed automatically each time the time limit runs out. Wait for the hundred days to elapse and the achievement is yours.

This achievement pairs well with Triple Trouble.
Fame without fortune
Finish a full game without selling anything to the auction house.

This achievement can be unlocked on any difficulty level. You do not need to finish first to unlock the achievement.

Some tips:
  • Accept every harbor quest. This will be your only method of earning money. Since you don't need to finish in first place, the fame penalty for failing a quest is inconsequential.

  • Any money you earn by completing quests is best spent on trade fodder (colorful marbles, whisky, fireworks, or machetes) as this will give you the most bang for your buck.

  • When recruiting companions, prioritize those with perks related to hunting or trading. Frederick Courtney Selous, Freya Stark, and Nikola Tesla all start with combat-proficient parties, making them good choices for this achievement.

  • Consider recruiting an artist. Canvases are inexpensive and paintings are highly valued by natives (+400% for portraits and +266% for landscapes).
A collector of sorts
Find all items.

To see the items you've collected so far, check the Hall of Fame (via the main game menu). To earn the achievement, you will need to collect all but two of these items; the exceptions are indicated with an asterisk (*) below. Some secret explorers start with special items (See Secret Session); these do not appear in the Hall of Fame and do not count towards this achievement.

You'll come across most of the items without any special effort, but even after you've completed every dock quest and collected every tome page, painting, and charred piece of meat, you might find yourself missing a few. Here are some of the more challenging ones:

Row 1
5th item*
See Corrupted King
Sussie
7th item
Rest in a native village with drums in your inventory and a random event may occur. You may have to try this several times, as the drums will sometimes break.
13th item
Starting item for an explorer, make sure you have all explorers unlocked!
19th item
A rare, random event involving some vengeful ghosts may occur when the party rests outside or at the ship...
Row 3
7th item
Recruit a native and let them die on the same expedition.
Row 6
19th item
Spending the night at a mission or cenote will occasionally yield information about this elusive animal.
21st item
This rare beast occasionally appears in arctic worlds.
Row 7
8th item*
Not all introductions go as planned...(see Cold Companion).
Row 8
1st item
Choose the Bullet Hoarder perk after an expedition.
2nd item
Liberating a Slaver Camp in a Prehistoric world will sometimes generate this item as loot.
No New Friends
Finish in at least third place and recruit nobody at the harbor or villages.

This achievement can be completed on a Tourist Trip run. It's best to choose an explorer who starts with three companions to maximize your inventory space. You can still recruit companions in other ways:
  • Hatching a tortoise or raptor from an egg (presumed acceptable); see Breeder

  • Defending a native from (a) wild animal(s) while resting out in the open (presumed acceptable)

  • Reviving a lost companion at an altar (presumed acceptable).

  • Duplicating a companion using the obsidian mirror (verified acceptable).

  • Purchasing a slave at a slaver camp (presumed acceptable).

  • Defeating all slavers at a slaver camp and having one of the former captives join your party (verified acceptable).
Dedicated explorer
Obtain 19 golden frames.

So that's what the museum has been doing with all that gold.

To unlock this achievement you will need to finish a game in first place with every explorer. This can be done on Tourist Trip difficulty. The achievement will trigger when you earn a gold frame with any 19 explorers; secret explorers count too (See Secret Session).

Aleister Crowley is better off replacing his cultists as soon as possible, as they are unpredictable and have only red dice, preventing effective dice combos.

Marcus Garvey and H.P. Lovecraft can be challenging to work with due to their low base sanity. Since Garvey can have an extra member in his party, he can compensate for this by recruiting a missionary or two; their Strong Mind perk provides an increase in base sanity.

When playing as Lovecraft, consider spending some time at the beginning of Expedition 1 resting at the ship and farming tome pages with the Necronomicon. See Beyond the Gate and Triple Trouble for more on this strategy. With a bit of planning it's possible to get both of these achievements and the golden frame in a single run.
Ballooning
There is a small green hot air balloon which floats around in the main game menu (circled in orange below). Clicking on the balloon will cause it to disappear and reappear in a new location (if you can't find it it's probably hiding behind the title text). Clicking on the balloon several times will unlock the achievement.

Trippy Trip
Finish a full game using no sanity item other than coca leaves.

This is quite a bit easier than it sounds as it can be achieved in Tourist Trip mode and does not require you to finish in first place. Given the potential drawbacks to using coca leaves (paranoia, etc.), it's best to avoid using sanity restoration items entirely. Focus on increasing your base sanity and reaching the pyramid as quickly as possible. Picking up or purchasing sanity items for trading purposes does not nullify the achievement.

It's best to choose an explorer who starts with a mount or acquire one at the first village you encounter, as mounting a pack animal decreases the base cost of travel. The faster the mount, the greater the benefit, so replace your beast of burden with a camel or polar bear whenever possible.

Tesla is a good choice for this achievement as he starts with high base sanity. Recruit a missionary as soon as possible as missionaries both increase your base sanity and allow you to recoup sanity for free at missions. British soldiers can also come in handy as the Combat Spirit perk will grant you a sanity boost each time you win a battle.

When choosing perks, prioritize those which decrease the sanity cost of travel (Impetus, Desert Explorer, Jungle Explorer), increase base sanity/gained sanity (Pure Mind, Fresh Air Fanatic) or allow you to locate the golden pyramid more quickly (Navigator, Cartographer). The Occult Visions perk can also be useful, as stone circles can be used to reveal camp points.
The Reanimator
Revive 10 trek members at altars.

Altars can be found in jungle, desert, and arctic worlds on Expedition or Certain Death difficulty. When you mouse over the expedition location options, a small picture of an altar will be present if there is an altar somewhere in that world (circled in orange in the image below).

When you explore an altar, you will have the option to sacrifice some of your items. When the sacrifice bar is full, you can choose a former companion to resurrect. The companion does not have to be explicitly dead; a companion who was abandoned as the party fled from combat will also be retrievable. Goods purchased from London are worth very little at altars; sacrificing animal teeth and other hunting trophies is much more cost-effective.

If you make sacrifices an altar but do not use it, the "charge" will carry forward to other altars encountered during the game.

Triple Trouble
How many abominations can you handle?

This achievement can be completed on any difficulty level. You do not need to complete the run to unlock the achievement.

While Aleister Crowley seems like the obvious choice for this achievement, his party's lack of dice variety makes it difficult to farm enough meat to keep the abominations around for any length of time. H.P Lovecraft is a better bet due to his ability to farm tome pages.

The Lovecraft Strategy

Basic strategy:

Use the Necronomicon to generate tome pages until you have three tome pages of Abomination. Each use of the Necronomicon costs 35 sanity. Rest at the ship between uses to restore sanity; Do not use the Necronomicon if it will bring your sanity below zero, as this will result in the book combusting. Once you have three abominations in your party you will need to travel in order to trigger the achievement - a single step is all it takes.

Some tips:
  • You won't need to recruit a third companion before attempting the achievement as you can acquire companions through random events while resting at the ship.

  • H.P Lovecraft is unfortunately prone to racist tirades, which may cause non-native companions to acquire the racist perk and lead to inter-party strife. Fortunately, angry companions won't actually abandon the trek until you start moving, so there's no need to worry about group morale.

  • If you do get fed up with one of your companions, feel free to give them the boot.
They'll inevitably return later, contrite and occasionally bearing a small gift. If you take them back their loyalty will be reset to two hearts. The angry ailment will be removed but any other ailments, as well as any promotions, will remain.

  • Your companions will occasionally set fire to the surrounding area. Time doesn't pass when you've not moving, so you can safely ignore this. You will likely acquire several tome pages of world creation and targeted teleportation as you use the Necronomicon.

  • You can't dismiss your abomination companions without a fight, but you don't have to defeat them. You can always attack first, then flee immediately.

  • If you plan to continue the expedition after getting the achievement, consider promoting one of your companions using the many tome pages of wisdom you've no doubt acquired and dismissing them before turning the others. After you've rid yourself of the Abominations, you can teleport out of the area and rest at the ship until they rejoin you.

  • This achievement pairs well with Beyond the Gate.
Anthropologist
Create 50 anthropological studies.

Explorers with the Anthropology perk can create anthropological studies when resting in villages. The explorer Johan Huizinga starts with this perk. Studying a village has no effect on standing. Each village can only be studied once, but studies of multiple villages will stack into a single inventory slot.

If you are short on inventory space, consider selling the study back to the tribe (apparently someone in the village can read English!) Anthropological studies are also highly valued in London, where they can be exchanged for a generous 70 fame.
Pattern Recognition
In every world, there is a group of stick circles which form an equilateral triangle (circled in orange in the image below). Digging at the center of the triangle will yield 2-3 objects (often treasures or tome pages) and a hidden achievement.

Carrying a treasure pendulum in your inventory will cause an X to appear over the location of the treasure.

A tribute to Yama
"It is fragile yet full of vigor, reminding us to treasure every one of life's moments." - Spelunky 2, item entry 51

To unlock this achievement, sacrifice a golden eggplant to an altar (see The Reanimator). Golden eggplants are rare treasures which can occasionally be found in shrines. A single eggplant fills up 75% of the sacrifice bar.
Obsessive explorer
Obtain 19 platinum frames.

To complete this achievement you will need to finish in first place with all explorers while playing on Certain Death difficulty. In addition to suffering an increased sanity drain when moving, your party must now make it back to the ship and sail away in order to complete an expedition. Stamina is key; finishing in first place is much more difficult since you'll need to retrace your steps, and you'll have to bring back extra treasures to compensate.

Notably the Dedicated Explorer achievement can be obtained with any nineteen explorers, including secret explorers (see Secret Session); presumably the same is true for this achievement (unverified). Many of the secret explorers start with better items and party members than the base explorers, so it's worth a shot if you're struggling to complete this one.

Good luck!
This Land is My Land...
The final three achievements are unlocked in the asynchronous multiplayer mode, RIVALS.

For more on RIVALS mode strategy, check out my other guide:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3072610879
The This Land is My Land... achievement is unlocked by discovering a new region. Enter an unexplored square of the map and uncover all of the landmarks in that region and you will be credited with its discovery.
Making a Name for Yourself
This achievement is unlocked by discovering an outpost. Outposts act as starting points for new expeditions and are situated along rivers. In RIVALS mode, your compass points towards the nearest outpost.

In short:
  • Follow the compass
  • Explore landmarks along the sides of rivers
Monumental Achievement
This achievement is unlocked by finding the singular golden pyramid in a RIVALS world. Your best bet is to start in a recently-generated world. When you enter the party selection screen in RIVALS mode, the text at the top of the screen will tell you what percentage of the world has been explored. If you see a countdown instead, then the golden pyramid has already been discovered and you will need to wait until a new world is generated.

Some things to keep in mind:
  • In RIVALS mode, the compass does not point to the golden pyramid but to the nearest undiscovered outpost.

  • Seals do not uncover the pyramid, but exploring one will tell you in what cardinal direction the pyramid is located.
