@Samson - Those are used to visually show OBSCURED areas. An OBSCURED area is a location the infected can spawn in even if survivors have line of sight with them. Valve uses these for thick shrubbery or trees that aren't solid, but they are inconsistent with it's use and not every bit of shrubbery has the OBSCURED attribute, so we decided to use those rings as a visual representation for which trees have it and which ones don't.
