Anglo-Saxons Use Norse Graphics

Description
Welcome to my first mod for Crusader Kings III, which assigns the northern graphical culture to the Anglo-Saxons for both clothing and units.

I felt that the marshal/knight armour and clothing selection of the Scandinavian cultures better fitted the Anglo-Saxons than the default western ones. From what I can tell they still use the same hairstyles and beards as before, so they should still look distinctly 'Christian' in contrast to their Pagan neighbours.

I don't think the Norse units are as perfect of a fit, but I think they still look superior, in terms of historical accuracy, to the default western ones the Anglo-Saxons currently use. I'll definitely look to assign them different models in the future should a DLC add one that looks more suited.

I don't know exactly how the new changes to mod compatibility work in CK3 so I cannot tell you what you can run this with. This mod isn't too complex, it merely adds two lines to the 'graphical_cultures' section of the entry for anglo_saxon in the 00_west_germanic.txt culture file. Therefore, I'd be careful using this with mods that edit that file in particular.

✔️ Savegame compatible
❌ Ironman compatible.

UPDATE: Northern Graphics Extended has been released, which adds the Northern (clothing) graphical culture to Scots and the various Celtic cultures (except Breton). It also adds a new wooden castle graphic for the county/holding interface!

The mod has been 'updated' for the most recent version. Nothing was added, just changed the supported version so the launcher doesn't incorrectly inform you that it's outdated.

Also, since it's already included in my other mod ( Northern Graphics Extended ) I have decided not to add the new northern building graphics as (I assume) people who use this mod over the other one are only interested in changing the clothing and units. If people would like to add it to this mod as well, please don't hesitate to let me know.

In the meantime, if you wish to add it yourself, simply add the line norse_building_gfx under the entry for anglo_saxon in the mod files. Use the directory provided below if you don't know how to access it.

Unfortunately not, but it is relatively easy to make a small tweak to the mod yourself:

1. Navigate to you CK3 Steam Workshop mod folder (located in Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\1158310 ) and find the file for this mod.

2. Navigate through common\culture\cultures to the 00_west_germanic.txt file and open it with Notepad or something similar.

3. Find the entry for anglo_saxon and, underneath, replace the line that says northern_clothing_gfx with western_clothing_gfx and then save.

That should be all you need to do. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much!

Hey all. After giving it some thought, I took it upon myself to try modding in a new wooden castle/fortification image for the county/holding interface. Took a while but I seemed to have figured it out and it all seems to be working.

Unfortunately, the changes I had to make to the game files were rather substantial (in comparison to how much this mod alters) so I've instead decided to release it as a separate mod (which includes all the content from this one) which you can download HERE .

Hope you all enjoy!

drewweaves that's an interesting idea... considering Alfred the Great and his son Aethelstan are pretty much the ones who, in game terms, transitions Anglo-Saxons into a more Feudal style of government, what if Anglo-Saxons started as a "very advanced" tribal society? ie, they have the tech and development mostly researched, and it just requires the player to make the jump to feudal. Would be interesting to roleplay.

That said, AI would probably not pull it off well without custom scripting.

Ah that sucks, perhaps the saxons should be tribal anyways they were much closer to a tribal society especially during the 860's. Thanks for your work, this and your total war mods!

@drewweaves Castles did actually exist in Britain before the Normans. It was simply preferred to create Hillforts and Wooden Fortifications generally.

Unfortunately there isn't an alternative to the generic castle in the game at the moment. Even the Norse get them when they become feudal, instead of the wooden hillforts they got in CK2. If they add something more fitting in the future (and don't give it to the Anglo-Saxons by default) I'll be sure to add it to the mod.

Could you make it so that they don't have castles as well? No castles were built until the Normans showed up. I really hope paradox will fix this. xD
