Further tests show that the lacking of command line "-skipvalidation" is the reason why online darkest.exe will crash on loading when enabled “bonewheel” mod.
If you insist launching the game by directly clicking "_windows\win64\darkest.exe", you must firstly create a shortcut for the exe, then right click this shortcut's property, type "-skipvalidation" on the end of the target section, and use this shortcut to launch the game. By doing so, the crash will not happen.
Thus, this crash is NOT caused by the unofficial patch, and possibly not caused by code bug from those mods too, but caused by the way how steam launch Darkest Dungeon.
I shall keep searching the true reason of this weird crash. As for you and for now, you may still keep using this unofficial patch to benefit from its fixes, but please pay attention that you must launch the game from steam library, while never from directly clicking the "Darkest.exe".
I have confirmed this crash does exist when playing certain mods (such as “bonewheel” you mentioned before).
From my tests, this crash will only be triggered when launch the game from directly clicking the "Darkest.exe" main program under the path "_windows\win64\". If you launch the game formally from the steam library, this crash will not happen.
What is more, even the official vanilla "Darkest.exe" will trigger this crash, if it is directly clicked. And for the unofficial patch, this crash will not happen if you launch the game formally from the steam library.
I’ll check date for sure.
OK, I shall check this two mods later.
When do they crash? Are they just crash on loading the save?
Besides, please check the "program modify date" of your darkest.exe in "_windows\win64\", it should be 2025-07-05 17:56:28. Sometimes the exe will be rolled back when Steam update or Redhook update.
#1: i used to play on your file “unoffical exe dd1” by send it to desktop and play it normaly. I used stream and play it normally with stream launcher ( i used to played your unofficial exe directly before i got crash).
#2 i got delete cmd “monster disable” but still got crash, i’ll check again soon.
I not play in testing branch for sure, i was get a pop up in game stream launcher by play in 64 bit version and that all. I play on 64 bit version and at this time i can play normaly with new mod (400- 500 mod for sure and go smootly).
Any bug report is welcomed, so please don't worry, and feel free to give feedback if you have encountered any problem.
You have mentioned "path", are you launching the game from steam, or directly launching from the exe? Please try to directly launch the game by clicking "_windows\win64\Darkest.exe", and check if it works or crashes.
Besides, please check your Darkest Dungeon version by right click Darkest Dungeon on the steam library page, click property, make sure you are NOT on the testing branch (not on coming-in-hot) and repeat override the exe with unofficial fix patch, as steam will auto update and roll back the exe when switching between different versions.
Besides #2, remember to delete the official command line "disable monster pre loading" when playing 64-bit darkest dungeon.
After all the above, if the problem still cannot be solved, please add my steam friend, I shall try to help you check it in details.
I 100%sure that i coppy file then paste directly in folder game, and play by open exe file in folder 64bit like normal (i used to used your files long time ago so i pretty sure that i play correctly). I was try to only use some skin modonlu and used only 1 mod "sunward isle" and the game crash (game have 50 mod or less). I was play 1 save game with more than 400 mod before dev update 64 bit with your file and everything goes smoothly so i sure there someting wrong with your or sunward isle file.
I read some cmt that maybe bug happen because "path" in their mod still 32 bit so with new update it open 32 path not 64bit and it make crash happen (i not sure, just guess). After i switch back to use normal play by simple use stream launcher and everything work again.
Anyway your work is good, i just feedback may be there is an error in the file only.
The unofficial fix patch has updated from 32-bit to 64-bit on 2025-06-26, and further more updated from version 1.0 to version 3.0, thus the latest patch is:
"DarkestEXE_Fix_windows_x64_for_Build_26186_v3.0"
Are you using this patch when encountering game crash?
Besides, if you are playing 64-bit Darkest Dungeon with many mods, we strongly suggest setting the parameter "max_resource_entries" in "DarkestDungeon\shared\resource_manager.setup" from 32768 to a significantly larger number (for 16GB physical computer memory, the value is recommend to be set lower than 3000000, and for 32GB physical computer memory, the value is recommend to be set lower than 5000000), otherwise you might encounter game lag or other problems. For more details about "max_resource_entries", see the end part of chapter "The Overflow of Computer Memory".
I was used your file a long time ago and everything go great without doubt but i got 1 bug that when i used mod "sunward isle" one of biggest mod in game, game crash and doesn't work but evrything go fine when i go with normal play. Also seem like new file have conflict with mod name "bonewheeler" too. I think you can know what problem soon.
Hope we can get a fix update file soon.
