Description
### 1.1 Update ###
Compatible with 1.0.3. Changed culture from "Roman" to "Rhomaiois" to help remove confusion and to better distinguish Medieval Byzantine Romans from Classical Latin Romans.
##############

The simple obligatory CK mod that renames Byzantium to the more accurate Rome. The capital was moved to Constantinople by Constantine the Great in antiquity; the subordinate Western Roman Empire was lost - the Roman Empire did not fall until 1453. Furthermore, Justinian the Great liberated Italy, Africa, and Hispania, so the West wasn't really lost until much later than the conventional, Latin-biased telling anyway. The term "Byzantium" was never used by the Romans or by their contemporaries - it was invented after the fall of Constantinople to better legitimize the HRE. Since Constantinople was the capital anyway, they never referred to themselves as the Eastern Roman Empire either, nor did any of their contemporaries ever call them this, that term like "Byzantine Empire" is primarily a historiographic name invented by pre-modern Western historians.

Unlike any other similar mod, I have also renamed Greek culture to Roman (Rhomaiois) culture. They spoke Greek, but the game covers culture, not language. They would not have called themselves ethnically Greeks (Hellenes), this is an exonym applied by the West to them. The modern term "Greek" was invented in the 19th century to facilitate Greek nationalism and independence from the Ottoman Empire. Even up into the 20th century though, the Greek-speakers of the Turkish nation-state were referred to by themselves and by the government as Romans. They would have been quite surprised to learn that in fact they had really been Greeks the past thousand years and just didn't know it.

Although the game Anglicizes names when possible, I think a reasonable argument could be made that there is no real equivalent to Rhomaiois in English, so I have used the Greek cultural name instead of the English "Roman" (which people found confusing) or "Byzantine Roman." Greek speaking medieval Romans are obviously different from Latin speaking classical Romans, so using different words has some merit. The empire title does not suffer from similar confusion though because it's an unbroken state until the 4th crusade.

*Although the HRE can also reform the Roman Empire in-game, I actually think having two rival states called the Roman Empire is brilliant! It would perfectly sum up the confusion and controversy that would have followed the HRE trying to strengthen it's claim.

Perfect mod! I've been looking for a mod like this for a while; I always have to switch to Byzantines and rename them "Roman Empire" or "Empire of the Romans" for historical accuracy.

My one nitpick would be that Rhomaios as a culture name. I'd personally suggest using "Greco-Roman" instead, to distinguish that they're literally Romans who are influenced by Greek culture. It'd still be accurate since the Greeks back then considered themselves "Romans", while still showing their lingua franca is the Greek language (language is now part of cultures with the new expansion and Greco-Romans speaking Greek makes sense).

Also since Roman was a citizenship concept and many non-Greeks in the empire called themselves Roman, it makes culture conversion more straight-forward (that people are adopting Roman citizenship and learning the Greek language).

Anyway, great mod!!

Phantom, it was the Roman Empire. It was just the Roman Empire so changed as to be unrecognizable to someone who pictures the Julio-Claudian Era of Rome when you hear "Roman Empire." But the Byzantines were every bit as Roman as Julius Caesar.

A good mod for the time period, although I do not believe that the byzantine empire was actually the roman empire, I think it was a seperate entity.

Wow, Spaceracer is like the Avars, Bulgars and other horse nomads, he keeps crossing the Danube(Line) and rants(Raids) the country the Romans calls home, but in the end cant challange the Theodosian Walls(Facts) so he is forced to return home.

Great mod btw, and as one who studies this part of history, you are correct(The Modder).

Could you change their coat of arms too? The one in-game was only adopted around the 13th century, IIRC, well after both start dates. Something like a Chi Rho would probably fit better, as that was probably their most consistently used symbol.
