Download and configure antimicro
Antimicro is a free opensource app that lets you map your controller events into keyboard and mouse ones. So grab the latest release Antimicro releases on GitHub[github.com] and then install it (at the time of writing this guide the last release is 2.23 and is as older as 6 Nov 2016. Don't worry is perfectly fine).

Now it's time to run it. It should recognize your controller and present this user interface:

If you are out of luck, you can map your controller via "Controller Mapping" button:

and then map your controller:

Back to the previous interface it's time to assign your desired events. To do so simply click any of the buttons or axis and you will be prompted to select the key or mouse event to attach to. For example, to assign the digital pad click on "DPad 1":

Now take a look at the "Preset" combo. It comes with very useful mapping already preconfigured:

Ok, now my configuration for playing SWTOR (as and example, yours may vary) is as follows:

The intent of this mappings is the following:

  • My first stick (axis 1 and 2) allows basic movement of my character
  • My second stick (axis 3 and 4) mimics the mouse
  • The buttons of the sticks are mapped left and right mouse, so I have now a perfect mouse emulation from the controller
  • DPad and the first four buttons maps numbes 1-8, to later asign key bindings in the game
  • Three of the triggers (my buttons 5,7 and 8) are mapped to SHIFT, CONTROL, ALT, to allow later more key bindings in the game
  • The last trigger (my button 6) is assigned to TAB to have a simple means of targeting quicky
  • Select (my button 9) is mappep to ESC
  • Finally Start (my button 10) is mapped to M to bring up the map

DON'T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR CONFIGURATION

Now, in the next sections I will configure the ingame UI and bindings to do A LOT of things with this mappings

Tweak ingame keybindings
This powerfull feature is the key aspect to play with the controller with success.

In game, go to "Preferences" (Ctrl + P) -> Controls and select the below "Key bindings" tab and then the "Quickbar" option:

Now, the trick is to assign slots 1-8 on all quickbars in combination with shift, ctrl and alt. Also remember that you can combine the latest between them (for example shift + ctrl, ctrl + alt ...).

For the "Main Quickbar" I have assigned keys 1, 2, ..., 8
For the "Quickbar 2" I have Shift + 1, Shift + 2, ..., Shift + 8
For the "Quickbar 3" I have Ctrl + 1, Ctrl + 2, ..., Ctrl + 8
For the "Quickbar 4" I have Alt + 1, Alt + 2, ..., Alt + 8
For the "Quickbar 5" I have Shift + Ctrl + 1, Shift + Ctrl + 2, ..., Shift + Ctrl + 8
For the "Quickbar 6" I have Alt + Ctrl + 1, Alt + Ctrl + 2, ..., Alt + Ctrl + 8

So... Remember the mappings I made to my controller in antimicro? Now you get the idea! 8*6 = 48 key bindings easily tapped from the controller!

[Optional] Tweak the ingame UI
It is very convenient to do this step for an easy configuration of the CONTENTS of the quickbars and to see (graphically) the result of the effort.

To do so open the "Interfece editor":

and then load the "Extended Quickbard" interface:

Now select the quickbars one by one and:

  • Reduce "Scale" to 0.8
  • Reduce "Number of Slots" to 8
  • Reduce "Slots Per Row" to 4
  • Uncheck "Show Background"

Then rearrange the quickbars as you see fit. Mine is:

Yknow, hate to say it, but you can just use steam controller settings to run innately with the game rather than using a 3rd party program.
