Vampyr: Getting all character hints.

Hello everyone, I decided to make this guide because there's very little guides on how to unlock all of the character hints that not only help to make up the lore and character development but also unlock alot of XP both for pacifist and non-pacifist playthrough as you earn XP for unlocking the hints as well as earn more XP when you embrace them with all of their known information. So I will break this guide down into the area districts and then I will also break it down character to character as well. I will also be adding a section at the start of each district that will have warnings for which Y decisions and Investigation paths are important for those of you who only want spoilers for potential losses (or to speed you guys on so you know which characters to focus the guide on for your questions).

THE DOCKS PT.1 (Booth, Edwina & Seymour)

This section is for the characters who are in The Docks area:

Booth Digby

Booth Digby is a citizen of The Docks, who can typically be found smoking or shooting targets on the docks northeast of the Turquoise Turtle, north of Edwina Cox's position. He is worth 4000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Description: Inside a building by a dock northeast of the Turquoise Turtle, search in the safe behind the front desk to find a Cover Letter. Reading the letter will give you this hint.
Hint Description:Booth has already tried to find a job, so he could quit the Wet Boot Boys.

Hint 4:
XP worth upon Discovery: 500xp
Description: In the area where you first became a vampire - the place where Mary was killed - search the bodies and you'll find a Warning note from Booth Digby that will earn you this hint. This letter is found during Edwina Cox's 'Ghouldiggers Investigation'.
Hint Description:Booth believes in supernatural creatures, and events.

Edwina Cox

Edwina Cox is a Citizen of the Docks who can be found just east of the Turquoise Turtle in the eastern docks area. She is worth 5000XP once you unlock all of her hints and embrace her with no diseases.

Seymour Fishburn

Seymour Fishburn is a bald thin man who can be found in the East Docks, southeast of the Turquoise Turtle, near the area where you'd enter the bridge to cross to Southwark. He is worth 3000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Description: Keep an eye on Seymour and he will eventually walk to Stella's house and go inside, setting up an opportunity to eavesdrop. After the eavesdropping mission is activated, run around to the west side of the house and you can watch the conversation through the window to learn this hint.
Hint Description:Seymour is jealous of his mother's attention for Rufus Kingsberry.

Hint 3:

THE DOCKS PT.2 (Stella, Rufus & Enid)

Stella Fishburn

Stella Fishburn is a Citizen of The Docks. She spends her time indoors in her house, which is directly south of the Turquoise Turtle. The door is on the south side of the house. You must use mesmerize to force her to allow you to enter, and as she is mesmerize level 2, you'll need to complete the Blackmail in Whitechapel story mission before you'll be able to get in to speak with her. She is worth 2000XP once you unlock all of her hints and embrace her with no diseases.

Hint Description:Stella refuses to send her son Seymour to his death by denouncing him.

Rufus Kingsberry

Rufus Kingsberry is an orphan who lives on The Docks. He is friends with Stella Fishburn, and spends most of his time outside her house. He is worth 2000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Hint 3:
XP worth upon Discovery: 300xp
Description: Keep an eye on Rufus and you'll eventually notice him wandering into a house. Use your blood sense to activate an eavesdropping investigation, then watch him from the spot on the pier across from Stella's house, where Rufus spends most of his time. Rufus will go down a staircase and come out on the beach beneath the pier, where you can watch his conversation.
Hint Description:Rufus sole friend is a rat.

Hint 4:

Description: After learning Hint 3 of 4 for Rufus, speak with the boy and select "Personal questions." then select "Your only friend is a rat?"
Hint Description:Rufus's parents died when he was a child.

Enid Gillingham

Enid Gillingham is a senile old woman who lives in a house in the marketplace southeast of Sean Hampton's Night asylum in The Western Docks. She is worth 1000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Description: If you wait around in the market for long enough, Martin Nightingale will walk inside Enid's house. Use your blood sense to start an eavesdropping investigation. You can watch the two from the apartment upstairs, through a weak spot in the floor that is missing some floorboards.
Hint Description:Enid's weak memory has been exploited by Martin Nightingale to his own advantage.

Hint 2:
XP worth upon Discovery: 100xp
Description:On the second floor of a building behind where you rescue Archer Woodbead at the southeast corner of the east docks, you'll find a dead body in a pool of blood. Inspect this body to receive a Bloody letter as well as a Small pocket watch and you'll learn this hint.
Hint Description:Enid's son Jack has been killed.

Hint 3:
XP worth upon Discovery: 100xp
Description: Purchase the Music Box from Martin Nightingale's inventory. Examine the box in your inventory to find a letter from Enid to her son Jack, and learn this hint.
Hint Description:Enid' feels guilty about her son Jack.

Hint 4:

THE DOCKS PT.3 (Martin, Dyson, Sean & Archer)

Martin Nightingale

Martin Nightingale runs a shop in the marketplace southeast of Sean Hampton's Night asylum in The Western Docks. He is typically found just outside Enid Gillingham's house. She is worth 3000XP once you unlock all of her hints and embrace her with no diseases.

Hint Description:Martin abandoned his sick parents after they became infected by the epidemic.

Dyson Delaney is the town drunk in the docks. He will never be far from the Turquoise Turtle. You'll either find him inside, or very close to the building. He is worth 1000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Hint Description:Dyson has been rescued by Sean Hampton after he felt dead drunk in the canal.

Description: Speak to Dyson Delaney and select "Personal questions." Next, select "You must have had dreams when younger?" Finally, select "Were you an idealist, then?"
Hint Description:Dyson was an impassioned and radical anarchist when younger.

Hint 3:
XP worth upon Discovery: 250xp
Description: Complete Dyson Delaney's Tribute to the victims Investigation to learn this hint.
Hint Description:Dyson is responsible for a bombing attack, which killed people by mistake.

Hint 4:
XP worth upon Discovery: 50xp
Description: After learning hint 3 of 4 for Dyson Delaney,
speak with Dyson and select "How come I sense your guilt?"

This will create a Y Decision.
If you select "You too died that day." or "You are a coward!" you will learn this hint.

Hint Description:Dyson has always managed to hide his crime, and has never been judged.

Sean Hampton

Sean Hampton is the Pillar character for The Docks. Early in the game you encounter Sean Hampton and bring him to Pembroke Hospital. Later on he can be found in his personal room in the shelter that he runs in the West Docks. It's the furthest north building in the West Docks area. He is worth 6000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him.

Description: Before you find Sean Hampton in his shelter in Chapter 3, speak to Tom Watts in the Turquoise Turtle, and select "I'm looking for Sean Hampton?" then, select "Did he return to his flock?".
Hint Description:Sean was abandoned in a catholic orphanage when he was a baby.

Hint 2:
XP worth upon Discovery: 450xp
Description: Before you find Sean Hampton in his shelter in Chapter 3,
speak to Ichabod Throgmorton in front of the Turquoise Turtle, and select "I'm looking for Sean Hampton." then, select "I respect your refusal.".
Hint Description:Sean got molested by a priest when he was a child

Archer Woodbead

When you first meet Archer Woodbead, he's being besieged by Skals on the east side of The Docks. You'll have to save him on the day you encounter him or he will be killed. This can be extremely dangerous if you've been roaming around when you're low level - especially if you're searching for Dr. Strickland's pharmacist who is nearby. If you get too close and activate this encounter, you must save him that day or lose him forever, and you may be far lower level than the skals attacking him.

After you save Archer from the skal, he can be found in the east docks area, west of the Turquoise Turtle, near the dock where William Bishop's boat was found at the beginning of the game. He is worth 3000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Description: The first time you speak with Archer you'll automatically learn this hint.
Hint Description:Archer has no news from his son since Andrew joined the Guard of Priwen.

Hint 2:
XP worth upon Discovery: 450xp
Description: After Archer returns to the docks, speak to him and select "Your life in London?" then, select "About this part of town?" Finally, select "What about the gangs?"
Hint Description:Archer used to lead the Web Boot Boys when they were a respectable gang.

Hint 3:

Description: After Archer returns to the docks, speak with him and select "Personal questions." then, select "Tell me about the Guard of Priwen?"
Hint Description:Archer blames the Guard of Priwen for his son's disappearance.

THE DOCKS PT.4 (Sabrina, Tom & Ichabod)

Sabrina Cavendish

Sabrina Cavendish is the barmaid who works at the Turquoise Turtle in The Docks. She can always be found in the bar, or very near to the front entrance. She is worth 3000XP once you unlock all of her hints and embrace her with no diseases.

Description: When you return to the Docks in Chapter 3, occasionally, Sabrina and Tom will stop working to have a conversation. Watch them until they are finished talking and they will both walk out a door on the east side of the building and lock the door behind them. Use your blood sense to start an eavesdropping investigation. Follow them through the first door. They'll lock a second door behind them, but you can watch them through a window on the second floor. Just take the stairs to the left of the door.
Hint Description:Sabrina is taught by Tom Watts how to use a gun to protect herself.

Hint 2:
XP worth upon Discovery: 450xp
Description: Inside a trash can next to the building just to the right of the Turquoise Turtle, you can find a Torn off page of a diary. Reading this page will earn you this hint. Note that this hint can be earned at the very beginning of the game, far before most hints for characters from the docks.
Hint Description:Sabrina hides her true feelings about her boss Tom Watts.

Hint 3:
XP worth upon Discovery: 150xp
Description: After returning to The Docks in Chapter 3, speak to Sabrina and select "Your life in London?" then select "About the Docks?"

This will create a Y decision.
You will learn this hint no matter which choice you select.
Hint Description:Sabrina believes the Docks are dangerous and feels unsafe there.

Hint 4:

Description:After learning Hint 1 of 4 for Sabrina, speak to her and select "Personal questions." then select "Why do you have a gun?"

This will create a Y decision.
If you select "Guns are dangerous." or "You should relax." you will learn this hint.

Hint Description:Sabrina has been assaulted by a client once.

Tom Watts

Tom Watts is the bar owner of the Turquoise Turtle in The Docks. He's a well respected member of the community, who can always be found behind the counter at the bar. He is worth 5000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Description: During Tom's investigation while you're fetching gin from his stash, when you enter his locked storeroom in the warehouse, check the lockers to the north to find a Newspaper article which will give you this hint when you read it.
Hint Description:Tom had been in jail for attempted murder.

Hint 4:
XP worth upon Discovery: 750xp
Description: After you fetch Tom's Gin from the warehouse on the western docks during his Shortage of essential procut Investigation mission, return and speak with Tom and select "Your warehouse wasn't empty!" to earn this hint.
Hint Description:Tom prefers to avoid the law, and its enforcers.

Hint 5:
XP worth upon Discovery: 250xp
Description: After speaking with Edgar Swansea upstairs in the Turquoise Turtle in the
Chapter 1 story mission, Eternal Thirst, speak to Sabrina Cavendish and select "I want the truth!" then select "Tell me about him?"
Upon first glance, it may seem that getting this hint is mandatory, but it's not. You can skip right over the conversations with Sabrina and Tom and just go out and search for William Bishop on your own. If you do not get this hint during this mission, however, you'll lose it forever.
Hint Description:Tom and William Bishop used to be good friends.

Ichabod Throgmorton

Ichabod Throgmorton is an amateur vampire hunter who lives in The Docks. When you first meet Ichabod, he's inspecting a dead body in front of the Turquoise Turtle, on the trail of a possible vampire. After you meet with Sean Hampton in his Night Asylum, Ichabod can be found wandering around near the gates in front of Sean's building. He is worth 4000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Description: Speak to Ichabod and select "Your life in London?" then, select "About this neighborhood?"
Hint Description:Ichabod believes vampires have killed Jack Gillingham.

Hint 2:

Description: Complete Ichabod's Vampire hunter extraordinaire Investigation mission. Whether you hang the posters, or burn them, you'll earn this hint when you speak to Ichabod about the mission afterwards.
Hint Description:Ichabod considers himself the protector of Sean Hampton's night shelter.

Hint 3:
XP worth upon Discovery: 600xp
Description: Go as far west along the pier as possible in the Western Docks, and then turn and head north toward Sean Hampton's Night asylum. Keep an eye out for a corpse near a building on the left side of the street that you can loot. Loot this body to find the Guard of Priwen note. Reading the note will give you this hint.
Hint Description:Ichabod is not considered a real vampire hunter by the Guard of Priwen.

Hint 4:
XP worth upon Discovery: 400xp
Description: After learning Hint 3 of 4 for Ichabod, speak to him and select "Personal questions." then, select "You're a fraud!"

This will create a Y decision.
If you select "Stop fooling yourself." or "You are a lunatic!" you will earn this hint.

Hint Description:Ichabod had mercy upon the only vampire he found, and spared her.

THE DOCKS PT.5 (Rodney, Giselle & Lottie)

Rodney Grader

Rodney Grader is a Citizen of the Docks who has gone into hiding in fear of the wet boot boys. When you first meet Rodney Grader, he's down in the sewers with the skals, hiding in Old Bridget's sewer hideout. Take the stairs down near Harriet Jones's room, then follow the path to a sewer tunnel where you'll find him. After you convince him to return to the Docks, he can be found in the marketplace southeast of Sean Hampton's Night asylum, near Margin Nightingale. He is worth 3000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Hint Description:Rodney was the friend of Enid Gillingham's son.

Hint 4:

Description: Find Enid Gillingham's house, in the market near Martin Nightingale, and use your mesmerize ability to force her to let you enter her home. Once inside, search the bookshelf next to the door and you'll find an Unfinished letter and learn this hint.
Hint Description:Rodney has fled away after having killed a member of the Wet Boot Boys.

Hint 5:

Description: After learning Hint 4 of 5 for Rodney, speak to him a 2nd time down in the sewers.

Clay Cox

Clay Cox is a Citizen of the Pembroke Hospital District. Clay will not show up for conversations until after you've finished the Take me to a Hospital mission. (Even if you sleep, Clay will stay down on the docks until after you complete this mission) After that, Clay can be found out near the medical tents in front of the hospital. He stays near the tents that are outside of the hospital grounds, near the river. When you first meet Clay Cox, he's been in a fight and has been stabbed. He's a rude bugger and doesn't do much to foster goodwill. You must decide whether to mesmerise and kill him on the spot for an experience boost, or let him live another day.
You earn a trophy for either choice - meaning you must play through the game twice and try things both ways to get both trophies. He is worth 1000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Dr. Edgar Swansea

Doctor Edgar Swansea runs the Pembroke Hospital, and can typically be found in his office on the second floor in the middle of the hospital. He is the pillar character for the Pembroke area on whom all other characters in the district rely.Dr. Swansea's hints are slightly different than most characters in a couple of ways:
1. You must talk to Swansea at specific times during the game to access his hints, rather than simply selecting specific dialog options, or finding collectibles.
2. Dr. Swansea does not immediately gain any XP for his blood quality when you learn hints about him. However, at the end of the game, if you have all 3 hints, Dr. Swansea's XP doubles and he is worth 12,000XP.

Hint 1:

Description: After attending your sister's funeral at the beginning of Chapter 3, if you open and look at the map, you may notice that there is an ! symbol on the map over Pembroke Hospital. Examining this symbol, you will find that a special conversation is available with Dr. Swansea back at the Pembroke.
You must return to the Pembroke to speak with Dr. Swansea before you complete the next story objective, which is to go to the church in Whitechapel, if you want to have this conversation and learn this hint. Once you go to the church, this optional conversation will close, and you'll lose this hint forever.
Getting back to the Pembroke takes you far out of your way, and there are a lot of tough enemies on the road back to the hospital on Whitechapel Street. You cannot return through the cemetery, as the gate is temporarily locked because of the funeral. You have to go the long way around.
Once you reach the hospital, speak to Dr. Swanea. Ask Swansea "Have you ever lost a relative to a vampire?"
Hint Description:Edgar would not stand for having a family member killed by a vampire.

Hint 2:
XP worth upon Discovery: 3000xp
Description: Throughout the game, side conversations with Dr. Swansea will continue to become available. Watch for the ! on the map after each major objective. Return to talk to Dr. Swansea every time you see a !. The main conversation is always based on the events that have recently happened, but the side options change the more times you talk to him. Eventually one of the the side conversation options will be "Help in the West End?" Select "Help in the West End?" then, select "Where is the Brotherhood?" to learn this hint.

Darius is the doorman for Dorothy Crane's illegal medical dispensary in Whitechapel. When you speak to him, he will not let you enter and denies knowing Nurse Crane.
You must learn all of Darius's hints before you can convince him to let you in. An alternate option presented is to use mesmerize, but you must be Level 2 in your mesmerize ability, and to my knowledge you cannot attain Level 2 mesmerize before you enter the medical dispensary. Camellia

Camellia is a mute gardener that tends to flowers in Whitechapel. She can be found tending potted plants in an alley along the right side of the church. Camellia cannot speak and will never have anything to say to you, no matter how much you pry. However, if you choose to embrace her, you will hear her thoughts, allowing you to hear what her voice would be like if she had one.
It's also worth noting that Camellia is the one citizen in the game (other than the pillar characters) who will never get sick. Even when there is a story event that causes everyone to become sick, it will not affect Camellia. She is apparently immune to disease. She is worth 5000XP once you unlock all of her hints and embrace her with no diseases.

Charles Jerome Albright is an investigator with Scotland Yard who can be found roaming the street in front of Temple Church, questioning people about missing persons and suspicious deaths. He is worth 4000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Usher Talltree is the Primate of the Order of Saint-Paul's Stole - the order to which Edgar Swansea belongs. He can be found in a tunnel beneath Temple Church, which can be accessed from the back of the building. He is worth 5000XP once you unlock all of his hints and embrace him with no diseases.

Usher Talltree and Obtaining Hints Through His Tarot Readings

For those of you who don't know (or for those of you who missed some of the hints that do not contain the dreaded RED X and think you need to replay the game to get them.) Usher Talltree actually gives you guys the hints for the characters in the game if you are having issues doing them yourself, however it does cost 150 shilling for each reading which is pretty costly and I'm not sure if you still gain XP for learning the hints this way as opposed to actually learning them by answering things correctly and being naturally inquisitive in the game. Also his hints are random so it is best to get as many hints as you can and when you have obtained all possible hints and are sure there's no way to obtain the others, then you should utilise this option as a last resort.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT USHER'S MECHANICS:

• AS STATED ABOVE, HE DOES NOT GIVE YOU HINTS THAT NOW CONTAIN A RED X ON THEM AS ONCE A HINT HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY CROSSED OUT, IT IS GONE FOREVER AND YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE A NEW PLAY THROUGH AND START AGAIN TO RE-OBTAIN THESE HINTS.
  
• HE ALSO CANNOT REVEAL HINTS ABOUT HIMSELF, ONLY OTHERS IN THE WORLD.
  
• HE ALSO CAN STILL DRAW MISSED HINTS FROM THOSE YOU HAVE LOST FOREVER, THIS DOES NOT REVEAL THE HINT HOWEVER AND WILL STILL COST YOU THE INITIAL 150 SHILLINGS.

Final Notes

Wow, this Guide took longer than expected to write as the first time I wrote it was back in like 2018? now it's the end of 2021 and finally I managed to get back into it and write it all up. Not gunna lie, part of it was making sure the information was correct and running through the game and getting the hints myself (thus the nice pictures of all the gathered hints for most characters, which will be uploaded very shortly after this guide is released). The other was the fact that I moved onto other games and decided to do a fun little play through of Vampyr again recently and saw my old save and decided it was time to re-take pictures i'd lost (also making sure they were better than last time with completed hints.) and finally finish and publish this guide once and for all.

Hopefully someone or a few people find this guide useful, I know now that I finally completed it that there is ALOT of guides online and videos as well but it's easier to search on the guides page on steam for some of this stuff and perhaps you guys preferred the layering of this guide than the others online. Not to mention it saves a google search or two to just look in the Steam Guides area and see it right there for all of you.

SUPPOSEDLY there is a way to get the hint and the other stuff by telling him you haven't read it yet (and obviously have not read it) and then halfway through the dialogue you can go into your inventory and read it before the dialogue finishes, but I have yet to test if this theory still works.)

I just tested it, it worked, I got both hint and collectible!

The workaround is the same as for Pandoras box.

You can pay Usher Talltree 150 shillings to learn a random hint from any character [only grey hints (not yet discovered are eligible)]

if you pay him 150 shillings you get a random hint if you got or lost a hint it will not be able to be recoverable through card reading.

So in order to get the investigation hint (if it is bugged like it was for me) and the pandoras box hint, you have to get ALL the other characters hints first BEFORE turning in the pandora collective WITHOUT reading it and before giving christina her scarf.

then you will be awarded the hints and they will be flagged as collected.

If you then finish the investigations the intented way (or give christina her scarf, which would usually void the hint you will not lose them)

I testified this through giving christina her scarf after getting hers and claytons hint through usher i still have the hint and both of them at max blood cap.

I tested out the Bugged Investigation in Whitechapel concerning the scarf and the bug with clayton. I also have a possible fix for pandoras box to get both the hint and the collectible.

Turns out the investigation is broken beyond repair (the intentional way), if you quit the game or possibly even die before getting and returning the scarf to clayton after getting the quest you will permanently lose the option to give it to clayton ever again in this save.

@Ataroth No the bug is not related to the choice neither is it related to which of the 2 characters gave you the investigation. It´s a bug that occurs when you do not finish the quest in one sitting after getting it. If you exit to menu or possibly even die you will lose the option to give it to Clayton. Exactly this happened to me and i have chosen to apologize. Googling it says there is a slight possibility that progressing in the main quest will fix the quest later on and make the option reappear, will test this during my playthrough since im affected by the bug and cant give it to Clayton as of now despite having the necessary hint to do so.

FOR CLAYTON DARBY and CHRISTINA POPA - There is a bug in their Cherished Souvenir quest line where, you MUST choose APOLOGIZE in the verbal options or the player will never have the opportunity to give the scarf to Clayton Darby. Thus, you will have to give it to Christina Popa and the player will lose TWO hints, one from each character. This is an unconfirmed workaround to the bug.

Oh my god. This is amazing. Seriously, seriously amazing. I began this game a few weeks ago and tried to succeed at a pacifist playthrough and tried to find all hints... but even with endless google searches I still ended up missing some of them and it pissed me off to the point where I just went on a rampage and turned London hostile in an effort to at least get the bad ending achievements, scrapping the idea of ever being able to succeed at a good run. Now that I see this fantastic guide of yours, though, I actually feel like I can try to tackle this game from that good playthrough goal instead!
