SWTOR Server Guides

A quick and lazy little guide to inform newer players which server is for what purpose, and which server's right for them.

Server Breakdowns

Star Forge (SF) is the primary US RP server. Most people will congregate and RP at the Imperial/Republic Fleet cantina. Before the game's Steam launch, most RP was done Imperial side. You are still able to find guilds centered around both playing the game, and roleplaying through guild events that are usually done with a d20 system, though every guild is different. I recommend <The Paragons Covenant> if you want to RP with a friendly group on the Empire that uses d20. It's almost akin to D&D. You are not required to have a lore-friendly name on this server, unless you intend to roleplay.

Satele Shan (SS) is the primary US PvE/PvP server. You will not find many people roleplaying on this server, but there will be a couple. If you want to experience the game's regular content and no RP, this is probably the best server for you if you're not from Europe.

Darth Malgus (DM) serves as the primary EU RPvE/PvP server, and is primarily English speaking. Unlike SF, most RPing players will be out in the world and expect RP both through the world and through guild events. This is overall a good choice if you're in Europe or wish to have a different RP experience from Star Forge

The Leviathan (TL) and Tulak Hord (TH) are both secondary EU servers focused on PvE/PvP and are mainly French and German speaking servers respectively. Good for players from those nations who don't want to stress with English.

Hey! I totally forgot a new server was added. Shae Vizsla is hosted in Sydney, Australia. I haven't played SWTOR in years so I can't say for sure how populated it is, but I imagine it's a mostly English speaking server.

Hey Vaulty & others; How is the new "Shae Vizsla" server since it is technically a "Asia--Pacific Server, just like Gav Daragon and others used to be ?

I'm Asian myself and can corroborate what @[MNI]Rizkid 0w0? says. The only option is Darth Malgus. I believe that Leviathan may offer slightly better ping but those aren't English-speaking servers.

For SEA friend, play on Darth Malgus. The US server they used is far from SEA, so ping is horrendous. EU server is closer to asian in this case.

I mainly play rp so I'm Star Forge all the way could use some better gear but considering i'm already lvl 26 in a lvl 25 area I'm not complaining

I'm a little upset during all the server merges, I ended up on an RP prime server. My old server was far from an RP server. Oh well.

That said, this is new information to me on what the servers are primary homes are interesting.
