Caretaker's Rust Survival Guide
By Caretaker
This is my extensive video guide on everything Rust. In these videos I teach you how to pick the right server and what the abbreviations mean. How to survive your first night, gather resources, and hunt. Then I teach you how to build new tools, start your first base, find loot, and how mods work. FInally I show off Rad Towns and the paths to the loot spawns for easier runs through the radiated areas as well as a run around the server explaining the locations on the map to help with navigation. This guide will be updated with the game.

Caretaker's Rust Survival Guide Ep. 1: Picking A Server

Hello everyone. In this video I will explain what all the abbreviations and other words mean when looking at the server list. I show the dangers of a bigger server, and teach about crafting time, and even encounter a good reason why to avoid bigger servers. If you're fresh starting out try looking for a Non-PVP, possibly Non-Sleeper server as those are the safest possible servers. I explain more in the video. I hope this helps you out as you join us in Rust.

If you'd like to join my server you're more than welcome to, and later we will be creating a town, a bartering/trade area, as well as arenas and other neat events on the server.

My server: [US]Rust++ Lavender Town (InstaCraft/Sleepers/PVP/LearnToPlay) IP:Port=173.208.68.130:28105

Caretaker's Rust Survival Guide Ep. 2: Your First Day/Night

Your first night is of course very important as you're equipped with nothing but the bare bone essentials to get started. If a server has Rust++ you can type /starter in chat and get a starter kit to help out. I have one on my server. If not you're gonna need to use your trusty rock.

Starting off you wanna get a few things made. A camp fire, stone hatchet, wood shelter, door, hunting bow, and sleeping bag. While you gather material for these you also want to make sure to hunt animals for a few resources need to make these, and food to avoid starving to death. I also teach you a neat little trick/glitch to help hunting hostile animals and not dying a painful death.

Day 1 Checklist:

-Campfire

-Food

-Sleeping Bag(Spawn Point)

-Wood

-Stones

-Wood Shelter

-Wooden Door

-Hunting Bow w/Arrows

-Stone Hatchet

Caretaker's Rust Survival Guide Ep. 3: Hunting/New Tools

Having survived the night and not hunted the day prior now is a good time to start. After hunting and harvesting you're going to want to work on items to help you craft better items. These include a Furnace for smelting your ore/cooking your cloth into leather. As well as a Work Bench to use Research Kits, craft better weapons, and craft higher level recipes.

One major tool you're going to want to craft after you've obtained some Metal Fragments from your Furnace is a Hatchet. It is best used for gathering wood from trees should you be desperate for wood, harvesting animals, kills non-black zombies in two hits, and unarmored players in four. The next item you're going to want to get is a Pick Axe. You can either get one from a loot crate if you're lucky, or off a zombie. They're about average in terms of drop rate.

Here's a short description/list of the animals you can hunt :

Rabbit: Super slow, extremely low health, and easily killed. Though because it is small it can be harder to hit. Make sure to swing then crouch to hit them. Yields Raw Chicken Breast and Cloth.

Chicken: Pretty much the same as the Rabbit. Will make a sound as well, especially when startled.

Boars: They are super slow, have relatively low health, and are the easiest to hunt. When chasing one make sure to swing and sprint as the animation will still go through and you can cover any distance the boar might have gotten on you. Takes two shots from a bow to kill. Yields Cloth, Raw Chicken Breast, Animal Fat, and Blood.

Bucks: They have a decent amount of health, but you can't keep up with them. You're either going to need to be patient or make a weapon to hunt them. It takes two arrows to kill them. An alternative is to crouch, hit it, wait for it to stop running, and repeat the process. Yields the same as Boars, but with a slight increase.

Wolves: They have about as much health as a deer, but they are hostile and will attack you when you get in range. You cannot beat them with just a rock, stone hatchet, or even a hatchet. You're gonna want to use a bow. It takes two arrows to kill one. Yields the same as Bucks.

Bears: Bears have the most health out of all the animals you can hunt and will take four shots to kill. They are hostile and will chase you for quite a long time just like wolves will. You absolutely need a ranged weapon when killing a bear as they do the most damage out of all of them, and you're not gonna win against a bear using a rock. They yield about the same as Bucks/Wolves but also drop Leather.

*Note: Leather can only be found from harvesting a bear or cooking Cloth in a Furnace. I believe I show this in a later video as well.

Day 2 Checklist:

-Food(If you didn't get any your first night, and if you're running low.)

-Furnace

-Workbench

-Hatchet

-Smelt your Metal/Sulfur Ore

-Find a Pick Axe if possible.

-New/Better weapon if possible (Revolver, shown in next episode.)

-Wood(Fuel, and later for building your first house.)

-Cloth Armor Set

Caretaker's Rust Survival Guide Ep. 4: First Gun/Rad Area

After you've crafted a Hatchet, and anything else you've made you're gonna want to make a weapon and some ammunition. The easiest to make are the Hand Cannon and PIpe Shotgun. Now, these weapons aren't very effective. You'd just be wasting resources honestly. The best one to make at his level if you aren't in a place you can raid safely/frequently is the Revolver. The materials aren't too bad, and 9mm ammo is extremely easy to make and find.

Once you've got a decent weapon you can begin raiding. In the video, I go into a very dangerous Radiation Zone known as Civ Desert. There are tons of zombies, a fair bit of crates, and high radiation. It is recommended that you have at least a pistol of some kind before attempting to go for an area like this as zombies spawn frequently, and their aggro radius is pretty huge. Not to mention the radiation levels are pretty high so without some gear/Anti-Radiation Pills your radiation is gonna sky rocket and you'll start taking damage until it goes down again. 500 is the level that you will gain the debuff Radiation and start taking damage. Radiation will naturally go down outside of a radiated zone.

*Note: CTRL+Clicking the craft button will make the max amount of an item you have the resources for. Thanks to zrtec1 for pointing that out.

Caretaker's Rust Survival Guide Ep. 5: Building A Base

There are a lot of factors to look into when creating your base. The first thing you want to find is a decently flat surface so that you can set down your foundation. You cannot place foundation on mountainous/rocky terrain. It has to be regular ground. Luckily you can find areas in the mountains to place your foundation and these make excellent hiding spots/secondary spawn points in case you're raided. You can however place a regular Wood Shelter on rocky terrain as well as a few other wooden building items such as barricades, and spikes.

The next thing you're going to want to look for is how hidden is your base? It's always nice to be near a rad town, but the closer you are the more open/likely to be found you are. It's always good to find a nice spot to build a decent sized base without people constantly seeing it and setting up raids on you. Finally you want to make sure to build it so it's not easy to raid. Personally I recommend setting up a few floors of false walls/areas using ramps and walls, or you could just set up TONS of floors with doorways and pop in metal doors forcing the raiders to waste C4 and generally give up before they reach the loot at the top. You can also put decoy storage crates/sleeping bags as well to trick attackers and burn C4.

As I mentioned earlier you're going to want to have multiple spawn points/bases. Hide a Wood Shelter, or even build a foundation and small base that is hidden well and/or inconspicuous. Inside you're going to want to put a Sleeping Bag just in case they get into your main base, kill you, and your Sleeping Bag. That is you're even in your base. Inside this secret base you're going to want to also leave yourself some emergency supplies in a (Large)Wooden Storage. A weapon, food, armor, ammo, tools, med kits, whatever you think you'll need in case you're going to have to fight back, or start again.

This also helps out if you are raided as they'll only get a portion of what you had, and you can go back and fight them off, or rebuild. It's your choice when building a secret base as well. A Wood Shelter seems less conspicuous and an unlikely target to waste C4 on. However a small base might be something someone might check. Either way both stand out if you use a Metal Door, but not using one would be kind of foolish if you really want to keep it safe. Try turning the doorway away from general viewing so people don't see it, and assume there might be good loot inside.

*Note: When building a window, make sure to make Metal Window Bars. They are invincible at the moment. However, the window itself is not. They can C4 it and get inside. Remember this when building your base. Also, be sure to place foundations around your house, and place pillars all around them to prevent people from building ramps/stairs to higher points and C4ing your wall for your loot. One pillar in the middle usually works, but doing so people might be able to use it to build still if your pillars make a 4x4 so be careful. Lastly you're gonna wanna fortify your base with Large Spike Walls, Wooden Gates, and possibly Wood Barricades to impede your attackers.

When building a base make sure you follow these rules:

-Don't build in a popular area/near a rad town. It helps you be close for raids, but the closer you are, the more likely you are to be found and raided.

-You can't put foundation on rock/mountains.

-Find a flat surface to put your foundation to maximize how many you can place when building bigger bases.

-Use your first few floors as a defenses, and have your loot/sleeping bags in a hidden/protected area on a higher floor.

-Use Metal Doors, and Metal Window Bars to help deter/slow down attackers.

-Put foundations around your house and place pillars on them to prevent people from building around your house, or stairways to get to a higher floor and knock out a weaker area.

-Use decoy crates/fake walls to trick people into wasting C4.

-Make sure to build a hidden base w/ an extra spawn point, gear, and things to defend yourself and/or start over such as: Food, Weapons, Ammo, Armor, Med Kits, and Tools(Hatchet/Pick Axe).

-If you fear raiders, have another area, a secret base for just your loot or a portion of it. Make sure it looks inconspicuous or like a normal abandoned shelter or it might end up a target. Turn the doorway away to hide the metal door as well.

Caretaker's Rust Survival Guide Ep. 6: All Loot Spawns

I apologize for the background noise. I didn't realize my chair was knocking my mic stand, and my dad opened the door when I was recording. Didn't even think to just stop and wait cuz I was into the video. Either way, hope this helps you on find your way through zombie infested radiation zones and to those sweet, sweet, loot crates. Name locations in order will be in the comment section below.

Umm, not off the top of my head. If you're a newbie and just wanna learn the map, and the game I'd stick to a low pop server. Preferrably with sleepers off, possibly pvp off.
1Lyndon May 22, 2014 @ 11:45am
Ok do you know any other server that is good for newbies?
Caretaker  [author] May 21, 2014 @ 10:49pm
Yea, I couldn't afford it anymore. Sorry.
