Tortuga

Description
Tortuga is a 20-slot deathmatch map set in a coastal nighttime town built into the rocky cliffs. Stroll around the stone waterfront streets under the light of oil lamps and the Moon, explore the sprawling, multi-storey buildings with open-air bars. Wander up into the heights of the cliffs and bask in the pink warmth of the torches in the rocks, and jump down the wells into deep, watery caves that spill back out into the ocean.

This map is 'ported' - or rather, hand-rebuilt - from another free FPS game called Sauerbraten, originally made by a player named viruz. The map's layout is long and thin, stretching in an L-shape around the rocky cliffs with high ground and wells that drop into caves at either end. I expect it won't play much like traditional Fistful of Frags maps, which tend to be built more like circles where all the paths and corridors twist and turn back into each other.

For the most part, this map is recreated almost identically to viruz's original, only differing in the clutter and detailing of the indoors and a handful of spots upon the water. In the original map, you can swim in the water, but in my opinion swimming makes for awkward and clunky gameplay, so with that in mind and also keeping in line with FoF standards, the water kills you in this map. Since that breaks a couple important parts of the map, I've added platforms and walkways on the water where appropriate. I'm willing to change the layout of this map as I see how it plays in practice, but for the first release I want it to be as close to the original as possible.

Tortuga has been my personal project over the last month and it's been a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable thing to spend my free computer-time on. Now that it's complete I feel inspired to maybe work on an original layout in the future. Hopefully you the player will enjoy Tortuga as much as I enjoyed making it, for its visuals and quirks (and maybe even good gameplay!), and please leave any feedback on how you'd like to see the map altered if you have something to say.

With that said, cheers everyone, see you in the deathmatch. Enjoy.

Update 2/7/2020 - Tortuga has new lighting and now supports DirectX 8. The water is more reflective, the map is slightly brighter, and the yellow lights are softer. Lights and the sticks they hang from are no longer solid. Also edited some props' fade-out distance.

Update 9/7/2020 - Fixed HDR lighting, fixed cubemaps, added glow to the oil lamps and candles, added fog, added more props and clutter in various locations, changed some whiskey spots, added a breakable fence section to the corner of the sniper nest at the right end of the map

14/7/2020 - Tortuga was added to the game so I will update the workshop version less or not at all from now on, updates will go in the game's update notes page

Congrats on the addition. Where did you pick up the SMW Athletic sample for the mechanical piano?

I did think about doing a daytime version while making the map, but I feel like the beauty of the map is in the mixture of moonlight, fire, and natural darkness in the caves. Might give it a shot anyway.

I also had a couple ideas for breaking up the monotony of the buildings, maybe octagonal sticks of wood sticking out of them like on fof_desperados? Or tesselated rectangular bricks at some of the corners. The one building right in the middle of the map with the two long open windows looks especially boring to me.

This is a nice map. I like that it's big yet open, so you won't get lost and can see the action across the water. Easy to navigate, clean of clutter and spacious. The way it's built into the terrain with tunnels is cool and fits in with vanilla maps like Desperados.

I'd like to see a daytime (midday) version as well. Maybe some different building materials or colors here and there to break up the stone / add visual variety.
