Step 1 - Set Launch Options
In your Steam library, Right click The Evil Within > Properties > Set Launch Options.

Copy and paste the list below.

+com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +vt_maxaniso 4

NOTE If you intend to play the game above 60FPS, ADD +r_swapinterval 0 to the end, this will unlock the framerate.

Explanation -
  • +com_allowconsole 1 - Enables the console in game (Press INSERT to use)
  • +com_skipIntroVideo 1 - Skips the long start up video
  • +vt_maxaniso 4 - Increase the Anistropic Filtering scale to 4x (4x is the max in this engine)
  • +r_swapinterval 0 - Unlocks the Framerate. NOTE - Unlocking the framerate can cause MINOR Issues such as, Enemy attacks draining health slightly faster, and a slight increase to enemy attack speed.
I have completed the game multiple times with +r_swapinterval 0 enabled, i've even completed AKUMU mode (playing at 144fps). It's absolutely fine :)
Step 2 - Download Flawless Widescreen (Increase FOV, Fix Aspect Ratio, Bloom etc.)
Download and Install Flawless Widescreen [www.flawlesswidescreen.org]

Set the path to where your steam library is located - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps

Say yes to the next pop-up. Scroll to The Evil Within and click it. This will download the preset, fiddle with the sliders if you want to increase the FOV, I usually just max them both.

Remember to run this software and click on The Evil Within preset BEFORE launching the game.

Step 3 - In Game Console Commands
Launch the game and press INSERT to activate console. Type out the commands below and hit ENTER

  • r_skipglare 1 - Disables the Post Processing effects.
  • m_smooth 0 - Disables mouse acceleration.
(1 being on, and 0 being off)

r_skipglare 1 Massively improves performance but will change how the game looks. In my opinion it actually looks better in most scenes anyway, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference, it's entirely up to you. But if you are struggling for frames, use the r_skipglare 1 command.

Try both r_skipglare 1 and r_skipglare 0 and see what you prefer.

r_skipglare 0 (default)

r_skipglare 1

And That's it :) <3

Thank you so much, this makes the game much more enjoyable.
Really nice work.

In Nvidea Control Panel, program settings, I added the game .exe and set max fps to 144. (You can select the value that suits you). If you turn this off, FPS will 100% load your GPU to the max FPS it is capable of. 300+fps 100 gpu utilization kills the card lol

r_skipglare 1 makes the game look "very good", as in it is super clean etc.

But I think for indoor scenes, the game becomes significantly less scary. I would suggest for any bright (e.g. outdoor daylight parts) keep it on so the game looks "better", but for dark/indoor parts, keep it off for the more horror experience.

One more note. If people are bothered by the bug of not being able to scroll through notes, the cheap work around is to not move your mouse when navigating the menu. This of course is a problem because you might jostle the mouse while using the scroll wheel. Try using HotkeyP (you can find it on SourceForge) and bind the scroll wheel to certain keys (e.g., Page Up and Page Down, hey, that's what they're meant for after all). Now you won't even need to be near your mouse.

Thank you for putting together a great guide. I wanted to add a suggestion in case anyone has the same issues I did, which were the 1920x1080 resolution stretching into both of my monitors. There is a utility called Borderless Gaming that is great for games like Fallout which don't have native fullscreen borderless. This solved the issue I was having, allowing me to use the Widescreen fix and still play at 1920x1080.

I installed the software and it works, but my aim reticle is off, so I miss most of my shots with the revolver.

What settings (in game) for you recommend for an 1920 x 1080 resolution?

Thanks, but it doesn't seem to work on the Epic Games version.

is skipglare saved forever, after you've confirmed it once in the console?

works for me, runs fine, no crashes yet (chapter 4), also changed the usual exe stuff (fullscreen opt. off, admin start, low dpi on app), and no ingame overlay. the mouse is working fine as well, only in menu's it is a bit too fast. playing without the widescreen program btw
