Fjordar

Description
Fjordar is an epic, tactical strategy game for 1 to 4 players, set during the Norwegian Civil War. The game begins in the year 1130, when the old king Sigurd Jorsalfar dies. Each player begins the game as one of Sigurd's heirs or one of the other influential people in Norway at the time, who is vying for power in the vacuum left by the old king's death.

As the game progresses through the 110 years of the conflict, players will use their heirs that are spread around the board to either strengthen their influence through marriage, or to continue the fight for control over Norway. By gaining glory in combat you can also attract influential families to your cause.

The game is played on a modular, semi-abstract, three dimensional board with a typical Norwegian coastal landscape, with mountains, fjords and islands, without being a map of Norway.

A player's turn in Fjordar typically goes like this: You play a card with movement points and various abilities, and use the movement points to move your units and establish supplylines. If you have moved one or more of your units into an area with enemy soldiers, you and the other player resolve combat by each choosing a combat card in secret and reveal them simultaneously, with the combat cards adding extra strength to your units' base strength.

You may then use your units to perform various actions at the different locations on the board. In forests you can build new ships, churches and villages. In villages you can muster troops and collect taxes, while in the castles you can marry away your heirs or bring them home to your own castle along your supplylines.

Some of the effects on previously played movement cards and combat cards also carry over to your later turns, which means that through proper planning you can build up to some very effective turns later in the game.

Points are scored for building new stave churches, burning stave churches, founding new villages, igniting beacons and moving your heirs between castles. The game is over when a player has reached 60 points or when a certain number of heirs have been placed on the heir-track.

Yes Draumr, you can do that. In fact, that's the only way to start a battle at sea. You can never enter a sea area with a ship if there already is a ship there, either if it's your own or an opponent's. But you can enter the area with the ship by moving a land-unit into it. As I mentioned in my previous comment we are working on a new rule book. It's almost done now, we are doing the last blind tests next week and so we expect to release it to the general public at the end of next week. If you (and anyone else reading this post) would like, you can have a sneak peek at it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sduo28evs3sza02/Fjordar_Living_Rules.pdf?dl=0 If you have any comments we would love to hear them! :-)

Thank you, Frodefrank!
One more question: Can you move a unit into an enemy's occupied ship to start a battle or to take control of an enemy's ship if it is empty? The way the rules are written it doesn't seem like you should be able to enter a space with an opponent's ship with your units, yet one of the examples implies that you can.

Thank you for pointing this out Draumr. The example with the Leidang is correct, it´s this text that is wrong: "2 For each Leidang in Areas adjacent to the Battle Area, add 1 Strength for each terrain level they are above the Battle Area.". The correct text should be: "2 For each Leidang in Areas adjacent to the Battle Area, add 1 Strength plus 1 Strength for each terrain level they are above the Battle Area."
And when you take control of a beacon lit by someone else it becomes unlit. You remove the other player´s cube when entering the area (or after winning battle) just as you would remove their cube when entering any other area controlled by another player.
I will clarify this in the rules. We are currently working on a new rulebook, with more proper layout in InDesign, and that will replace this Google Docs document in about a months time.

Two things that appear inconsistent/unclear in the Fjordar rules based on my first read:
1. Page 11 Leidang bonuses for adjacent high ground does not match the example on page 12.
2. What happens when you take control of a lit beacon - does it stay lit or become unlit?
