Angry Malady? No Problem!
Door Rosemagwin
Ever had Malady attacking you on sight and progression seemed hopeless? Killing all seekers apparently angered our demon princess. Don't worry, with a small work around, you should be able to still progress (though Malady will still definitely attack on sight).

The Problem
Does Malady attack you on sight, only to teleport out when she gets hit, never to be seen again and borking your progress? This is the guide for you.
What You Will Need
- A save where Malady hasn't teleported away yet. (So that would for example be a save between doing the final quest at Fort Joy and walking in on an angry Malady)
- Any character that can go invisible (either through the Polymorph spell, Ifan's quest item or a potion.)

If you do NOT have any access to an item that can make the player invisible, I recommend either loading an older save OR installing the Fort Joy Magic Mirror DLC that Larian so kindly put in their game. If you care about achievements, there is a plugin that will allow you to still get achievements even with mods enabled. Link to plugin: https://www.nexusmods.com/divinityoriginalsin2/mods/210.
How to Continue to the Next Part of the Game
All right, a quick how to on having Malady talk to us again, though she will stay forever angry at us as far as I can tell. I recommend rolling back to another save (described later in this guide), but you can continue onwards if you really want (tips for that at the bottom of the guide).

1. Sneak up on Malady. As long as you stay crouched and out of sight, you can get as close to her as you need.
2. Become invisible
3. While invisible, STAND UP AND TALK TO MALADY. This doesn't work while crouched, as you will attempt to pick pocket her. Not even right clicking her can fix this, nor can standing up from crouching and trying to talk to her quickly. You will need to be invisible for this to work.
4. Talk to her until she lets you move on to the next chapter of the game.
So.... Did I fix the Issue Now?
Uhm... no. Sadly, this is a work around. I think it's a quirk of the hidden faction system of the game. Malady seems to be tied to the seekers, so the second the seekers attitude to the player becomes 'attack on sight', then Malady will do so as well. It looks like Malady will remain forever mad at us. Yes, also during the next chapters no doubt. I'm playing through a save with this issue now to see how I can fix/workaround this. Just stay out of sight of Malady and try and not have her teleport away, as this may or may not be permanent (Thanks Larian).

Remember to save often and don't tickle a sleeping demon.
How to Permanently Fix This Issue (Requires Reloading Saves)
To permanently fix this issue, you'll have to roll back to an older save. What causes Malady to attack the player is upsetting the seekers. If the seekers are all killed at Fort Joy (most notably both Exter and Gareth) faction reputation with the seekers and thus also Malady will drop so low that they will attack you on sight. I recommend leaving one of them alive. If you are going to murder every living being in Rivellon, I recommend bringing the seekers onto The Lady Vengeance first. Killing them there is fine. I recommend leaving Exter alive, as he will die in the attack on the Lady Vengeance anyways, even if you don't kill him. Killing him on the Lady Vengeance doesn't anger Malady and you will be able to continue the game normally from there on out. There may be other places in the game where you can mess up Malady's faction reputation, but so far I haven't ran into one. I just recommend to not try and murder Malady. There may be a chance at the end of the game if you really wish to murder her, can tell you at a later date if that's possible.
Confirmed Workaround Locations and Tips
DEFINITELY SPOILERS COMING UP HERE, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

If you're going to continue with an angry Malady or already managed to do so earlier and don't want to roll back to a previous save, then check how to progress at these crucial steps in the game.

Sidenote: There will be moments where you can't avoid initiating combat with Malady. It happens as early as the activation of the Lady Vengeance. Below will be noted where that will happen and what the player should do to avoid hard locking their progress in the game. Either have high wits to move before Malady does and/or make sure the player doesn't have retribution or damage reflect (because damage from retribution will still trigger Malady's teleport.) Invisibility, teleport pyramids and the escapist trait will help you escape in these moments.

Sidenote 2: Any characters that were created by players (so not companions and mercenaries) should be able to turn invisible once the player reaches Reaper's Coast. You'll know why when we get there, just remember to do so.

Fort Joy -> Lady Vengeance
  • Sneak and Invisible will do the trick, just follow the main part of the guide, cause it was specifically made for this encounter.

Lady O' War (Activating the Ship)
  • All friendly NPCs will attack you on sight. This is Malady, Maeve, Constance, Tarquin and any seekers you may have left alive in the previous act. Sergeant Zrilla however will be chill with you, so you can still hire mercenaries. Any dismissed companions will be neutral to the player and won't be pulled into combat (thank god).
  • Hurting Malady isn't a terrible thing. She'll teleport out, but she'll reappear once you've used the songbook on the ship. Just don't hurt her after she reappears.
  • Once you've activated the ship, Malady will immediately attack on sight and won't talk to you like normal. Make sure you initiate this conversation with a character with high wits to make sure you have higher initiative than her. Flee the battle, then use the invisibility method described in this guide to talk to her and initiate the next ready check.
  • You can temporarily max out a character's wits with the mirror and send out that one character on their own to activate the ship (invisibility spell is recommended on this character.) You can change it back when you've escaped combat and before sneaking up and talking to malady to activate the check.

Lady O' War (Fight)
  • Malady is considered an enemy during this fight, so this will affect spells that target allies, or AoE that only affects enemies. (Though funnily enough, leaving combat and coming back to her seems to mark her as a friendly in combat.)
  • Warning if you're playing Lohse (like me) and make it to the Hall of Echoes after the fight. Your manifestation will fight you on sight. Make sure to crouch in a corner after blessing any god and your manifestation should talk to you normally (and not try and shank you to death). This is only a problem if the main character is Lohse, not if she's your companion. I'm going to guess that any other character will do just fine, as your god will remain tied up. Otherwise, try the same strategy on them.

Lady Vengeance ->Reaper's Coast
  • Once out of the Hall of Echoes, Malady is waiting for you at the bottom ship. Even if she looked friendly to you in the ship's fight, she is still 100% pissed at you. Before actually going to her, make sure you have a character with high wits and invisibility (you can set that up with the mirror now). You are going to need them soon. After doing this, use the default sneak, invisibility, stand up, talk method, so you can continue to the next chapter.
  • It may look just before the cut scene starts that Malady initiates combat with the player. While she technically does, this has no actual impact on the outcome of the scene.
  • Malady will attack you immediately upon loading into Reaper's Coast. This is fine. As long as she doesn't one bang your entire party, you should be okay. Don't worry if any party members do die, you can resurrect them in a bit. You just need to have your high wits invisibility character to get out (which you should have prepped if you followed this section's steps). Have your character with invisibility life and get out using the hatch. Damaging her here will not make teleport, because she is scripted to talk to the player first and then leave. Just leave through the hatch, sneak back up and then use the good old sneak, invisibility, stand up, talk method to progress the quest. When you stop talking to her, she will initiate combat, but she will just run off the ship. After that you can resurrect any party members that may have perished upon loading into the next act.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE
You cannot earn any additional Source Points on Driftwood. You will either have to reject any option to gain them or kill the Source Masters outright. (Trust me, I've tried everything, it's not possible to properly finish this questline by gaining source points. You WILL get hardstuck in the Hall of Echoes.) This means you'll have to play the rest of the game with one Source Point. Maybe one extra is possible, but I'm not sure. You also need to postpone your meeting with your god until AFTER you killed/denied all Source Masters. This is just to be 100% nothing goes wrong. (I mean, the game will give you a nice achievement finishing the act this way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Reaper's Coast: Hall of Echoes
  • Lohse already had this problem, now every player created character will. Once you've done the first Blackroot ritual in Meistr Siva's basement, the gods in the Hall of Echoes (or Lohse's demon) will attack on sight. YOU SHOULD NOT INITIATE COMBAT WITH THEM OR YOU WILL GET HARDSTUCK HERE. Instead, use invisibility to talk to them. You'll learn Spirit Vision, but the god will attack you immediately upon exiting dialogue. Cast spirit vision, then run back to the entrance to exit combat. When you're out of combat, your god should talk to you and progress the quest. The exit portal should open up after dialogue. Then leave the Hall of Echoes and never come back here.

Bloodmoon Island
  • Malady will teleport out on sight, which shouldn't be a problem. She should be on the ship right after, just don't anger her there. Best to teleport her back when you have little business on the ship left.

More coming soon, as I'm playing through the game with an angry Malady. Already putting the guide out there in case it will help someone out.

Edit: Its been years, but just confirming I probably won't ever finish this run. I'm not even sure I have the save file anymore and even if I did, I think Bloodmoon Island killed the run. Which was much further in than I thought I'd get. Also I think Malady getting angry actually turned out to be linked to a modded NPC that was part of the "seeker" faction and killing them tipped the faction's aggro. I don't know which one it was, I think it was one of the skill merchants of Helaene's mod, or one of the other class mods out there.

It has been ages since I last played. I remember a reason that I quit, might have been blood moon too. Who knows, trial and error is the way I figured most this stuff out.

Praise genocide and total chaos! Some friends and I are playing through like this currently and this guide has gotten us out of Fort Joy! How has your killing spree gone? Were you able to complete the playthrough, or are you stuck on Bloodmoon?

BeastK 23 mei 2020 om 4:54
yes and they did. but in these rpg games youre not meant to be able to play normally after ruining everything and btw, you can play genocide and have no problem going through the game

I have the right to test the limits of the game. If they allow me to murder everyone, they should have accounted for someone trying it.
BeastK 23 mei 2020 om 3:01
or you play the game from the beginning as fort joy doesnt take that long to go through again and you dont mess upp the story. You know you are supposed to be friendly to your allies. Keyword "Allies".
