#1 Do the tutorial, duh
You can't expect to do good if you don't know how the game works, obviously. You can't expect to not get pulled over if you start driving without a license.
#2 Complete the campaign
The campaign is a very important factor in training you to become a meat beat saber expert. The campaign gives you many scenarios and expectations to allow you to make sure you get a perfect score. These include the know about of the energy bar or swinging with your wrist instead of your arm.
#3 Try to use you wrist in some instances
Trust me, it is instinct to swing with your arm, but please, learn to use your wrist. You can use both during the song, but arms aren't always necessary when playing as for constant arm usage can tire you out quickly. Swinging with your wrists is also not always necessary either, but it can be, especially during build ups and drops in songs as the repetitive motion requires a great amount of endurance. Imagine it like playing tennis or badminton (or whatever similar sport). Try to fit in both techniques in a balanced fashion.

#4 Don't Freak Out
If you miss a block, don't have a convulsing seizure, because if you do, you are going to miss a lot more blocks which are gonna drain out your energy bar and overall cause you to fail. The best way to prevent this is just to look at the stuff ahead because if you get caught up in mourning over a missed block, you might as well close the game and play something else. Keep in mind certain patterns with blocks (if there are three consecutive red/blue blocks the pattern is going to be down-up-down or up-down-up; if there are two separate lines one blue and one red use the same block pattern yet do the red and blue at different times.)
Example:
#5 Take Breaks
Take some time to sit down and take some deep breaths because the game does get tiring after a while. If you are too sore to play anymore or get stuck on a level, try to come back later because you might perform better than last time. With practicing anything, getting frustrated about only makes it worse, so staying persistent while taking breaks in between is essential.
#6 Pay attention to audio cues
Listen carefully to the actual song as audio cues can help you prepare for what is next. The audio can also get you familiarized with patterns and assist with muscle memory.
#7 Try to recognize block placement patterns in songs.
Simply put, if the pattern happens once in the song, it's probably going to show up somewhere else in the song. One of the most simplest runs is an alternating up-up-down-down pattern or vise versa. Try to practice this basic pattern as it tends to show up a lot in songs.
Congratulations! You made it to the end!
Congrats! You made it to the end. Good job on reading the entire guide and I hope you found it helpful. You deserve a cookie.

And yes, I did used crappy stock images for my guide. Deal with it.

For rift users I should give the advice to enter "-vrmode oculus" or something like that in the start options. I have the oculus CV1 and holy fuck did it help out a lot
