Makes sense i guess :P
But the passive bonuses for having higher skill levels do offer an advantage.
Scouting is something worth sticking on a companion. I think it's a good skill to have, seeing much further around you is very useful. It helps with finding enemy armies running away and gives you more time to react to armies who might try to stop your sieges. The encyclopedia isn't that precise and it's time consuming to use.
Simply set the role of a companion in the clan tab to Scout, and they will level up in that skill.
Leadership is mostly only worth getting for the disciplinarian perk, which allows you to convert bandits into regular troops. Later on in the game when you have some fiefs those extra troops are useful to have. Most of the other perks are so miniscule that yeah it's not worth bothering with.
Taleworlds have said they want to rework perks and skills in future. So most of this info will probably be out of date in the next few months I imagine, and hope.
Rest of the guide is good though. Well worth a read.
Also, keeping abt a hundred mules, horse trading, always buying low and selling high anything, etc. And don't be afraid to stay overnight in towns to get sweet sweet smithy stamina.
