Stuttering and Lagspike fix for newcomers
By Shadow Wolf
Yes, you remember this guide, its from a old post i did on the forum a long time ago, i'm bringing it now to the guide section of PoE because a lot of people fixed their problems from there and some told me to put it here, so here is the old thread https://steamcommunity.com/app/238960/discussions/0/1737715419902135272/?ctp=2

I hope this guide help you!

Introduction
Hello guys, i see a lot of people "new ones" have fps problems, their fps is good but for some reason there is a lot of lag spike, stuttering and fps drops every second. Its simple, its your connection to the server.

The thing is, PoE have two sync networks, lockstep is live, if your connection is not STABLE REALY STABLE the game will microshut and wait your computer sync with the server, while in predict the client will simulate what happens before syncyng with the server so you will not get instant fps drops because the game is not freezing to catch the server.
The Fix
See if this happens to you: the constant framedrops are because of internet, tap F1 to see ping + fps, you will notice the fps and the ping in this game affect earch other if you use lockstep.
Change the networking (inside UI settings before selecting a character) from locksteck/auto to predicted and see if helps.

I hope this solve a lot of problems.
Still low frames?
I got here a pack of useful tips to help with the stuttering!

  • Other setting that is giving a LOT of constant fps drop is the new: Shadows + GI Quality. In ultra setting i get 30 fps at max, but if i change it to high my fps will skyrocket to 90 stable fps.

  • Try chaging texture to medium, lowering shadow from + GI to Standard shadow, low some configs, if not, it might be your Virtual Memory is not proper configured, even if is, then the problem might be related to your power consumption is not enought for you computer or even bad HDD, try defrag your HDD and see if helps, if none of this helps, might be a problem related to windows or your driver, first try updating your drivers.

  • if the above do not works, try this one as last resource (helped me alot on Conan Exiles lag spikes and i do have a geforce 1060, might help you on PoE):
For some time now, i've been using this program called Intelligent standby list cleaner ISLC to clean some garbage inside the ram when running bad optimized games and... the changes are big, big enought to put here on this old thread, if you are using a SSD, using predicted networking, even disabling sound and still have a lot of lagspikes (high noticeable on a summonner build or a build with a lot of projectiles on late game) i insist, try using ISLC, dont change any configuration, just turn on and go, remember to tick the [START] button and play some PoE with all the fixes from above, if helps please say so in the comments , if not, say too, so i can understand for what kind of hardware it helps. Cheers!

For future reference, this forum might help you research a solution to this or other games: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1004600/geforce-drivers/all-games-stuttering-with-fps-drops-since-windows-10-creators-update/266/
End notes
Please if anything here helps you, do comment and let people know about these so your game will be playable, thanks and good game guys.

The change from lockstep to predictive feels great. Although the movement skills act weird sometimes. Overall the game feels more smother and much better to play

@enragedllama please check out all the guide before talking the truth, everyone knows this, still, it helps a lot of users to make the game playable ... so... check out this part of the guide before being a ENRAGEDllama:

Cheers, i hope you got any help on this guide.

The "Fix" doesnt actually "Fix" anything. All that does is allow your client to desync from the server. Despite you "Moving and it feeling better" you are not actually doing that, in reality your character is still stuck back there. Lockstep was made specifically to fix this. All you are doing is providing a placebo of it looking better when in reality nothing what so ever changed.

Also sound effects are ran through the client causing lag, you can disable ambient and general sound effects in the .ini file to gain performance, though it's not really a nice fix, unless you already listen to music while playing yourself.

Also the sound slider in game doesn't help for this, the effects need to be completely disabled.

Nice to see it helps! I hope they can fix this issue with the in-game networking into the new PoE 2 coming next year.

Thanks, just changing the newtork option seems to have helped a lot, I can still feel the stutter when it happens but instead of freezing for some 0.5/2 seconds its basically just skips 3/5 frames and doesnt disrupt gameplay anymore, am getting a much stable framerate now, anywhere from 80 to 150, doesnt even drop below 60 anymore running on 1680x1050 60hz, GTX 750 2g 8g ram and an i5 750 ocd to 3.5ghz
