Introduction to the Custom Troop Trees mod
Want some OP units? Buff berserkers? Legal battlemaids?
This mod made many abuses possible.

Dont mind the blurry pictures.

You can make a permament choice between troop variety and level ceiling, or simply put: branches.
How many branches?
You can have either
1 branch with 7 ranks
2 branches with 6 ranks
3 branches with 5 ranks.

I will go for 3 branches here.

In my experience the only time 1 branch is worth it, is when you are going max op with your units, meaning crossbows at low levs, archers at high levs and cav archers at max lev.

2 branches is your typical infantry/archer or cavalry/cav archer set up.

3 branches is your standard infantry/archers/cavalry set up.

For your first time, i recommend going full on op with your units and then going somewhat more balanced.
Infantry
The best protection against archers are other meatshields people with shields.

They are most likely pretty useless, unless you prefer balancing your own units and not make them op.

For your all purpose meatshield you should give them:
Shields
Axes/Crushing Weapons
Armor

After that, you can give them a 2nd weapon (Apparently not all 3):
Throwing weapons
Polearms (For Anti-Cavalry) (Warhammer and pike are noteworthy and cheap)
Archers
Archers, the one who are the real danger.

So, what type of ranged weapon?
Guns?
Crossbows?
Bows?

Why not a mix?

For early levels, you can give them guns or crossbows (depending on whatever mod you are playing) and give them bows with fast firerate at high levels.

For example, you can focus on powerstrike at the early levels and give them powerdraw later on, meaning they are super powerful and make infantry pretty useless.

Your op archer will have:
Melee
Shield
Ranged weapon
Ammo
Cavalry
Cavalry, pesky kiters.

Depending on your number of branches, you will have to edit your cavalry troops accordingly.

Your general cavalry are either horse archers (dragoons included) or melee cavalry. Or both.

Melee cavalry is straight forward, give them a (armored) horse and a lance or an other type of long reach melee, and they'll do fine. In fact, you can just give your elite infantry some riding skill and you'll be fine too.

Horse archers however, take a long time to train. They are archers, meaning they require power draw, and are mounted, meaning they require horse archery investment. I dont recommend horse archers at low levels.

Your general loadout will be:
Shield
Melee weapon
Lance/Ranged weapon (Usually bow)
(Ammo)
+Horse
Editing your branch
It is very straightforward, but keep these things in mind:

Start with your lowest rank.
Do NOT let your troops have too different proficiency (because it bugs out (which is a bug)).
Try to make your entire branch at the beginning and not edit it later (because proficiency bug).
Tips
Proficiency doesn't matter too much, focus on getting good gear instead.

Shields are really good in warband.

2 Handers suck, unless they are axes or crushers.

Ranged units are very op when done right.

Male or female? Doesn't matter. Except when you have certain mods installed.
End
Hope you liked this guide and ,more importantly, understood it. I made this guide, as I havent found an other guide specifically about this.

All of this is my own experience.

Goodbye warband, this is my gift for you.

That is a good question, its best to ask the developer himself that.
I suggest doing diverse and different kingdoms to reduce the annoying effect.

For example:

1 Branch
Samurai with no shields, and lots of crossbows and bows.
Crossbow recruits and elite Horse archers.
Naked dudes with some weapon.

2 Branches
Khergit Khanate, but make them useful in sieges too.

3 Branches
Typical Knight Kingdom, but all branches are op.
