Zombie Fortress, not to be confused with Super Zombie Fortress or Zombie Mod is Team Fortress 2 mod-gamemode. It’s played on custom-made maps and requires a plugin to play. The Zombie Fortress plugin originally came out August 2008. In total currently roughly 6 servers run this mod-gamemode.

So what is Zombie Fortress?

Zombie Fortress is a gamemode about surviving a zombie apocalypse in Team Fortress 2’s stylized world.

The red team plays the roll of survivors. They must survive to win. They consist of all classes besides the scout, the spy and the heavy. Survivors only have one life. When one of them dies, they respawn as a pert of the zombie team. As time progresses in a round and more survivors die, it becomes less and less likely that they will win. If all survivors die, the zombies are declared the winners.

The blue team plays the roll of the zombies. Their goal is to kill all the survivors. They can only play as the scout, spy and heavy classes. The zombie team is also restricted to melee weapons only, excluding some utility secondarires and spy watches. Spies can also not disguise.

Central to Zombie Fortress’s gameplay is the perks system. Perks are semi-passive buffs that come into effect the next time a player respawns. To select a perk, players must use a chat command and navigate a menu. There are 2 sets of perks: survivor perks and zombie perks. They don’t share the same pool. Individual perks and their effects vary from server to server. Some servers don’t even have perks. Perks are themes, they’re like character traits. As an example, there’s a survivor perk called athletic. It grants players a movement speed and fire rate boost but lowers damage and crit chance.

Besides the name of the active perk, various buffs and debuffs from perks can be seen on-screen. Attack indicates a damage multiplier, defence indicates damage reduction percent, crit shows the boost in critical hit chance and speed shows the run speed modifier. These numbers sometimes change when one or many players’ perks interact with each other. Most perks that have active effects activate when the player presses their call-medic button. An example of this is the zombie side’s Rage perk.

For balance reasons, some weapons in Team Fortress 2 are either modified or banned, depending on the server.

In Zombie Fortress maps vary greatly in objectives. One map’s goal might be for survivors to simply survive, wile another might challenge survivors to cap points on their way to an exit or carry a briefcase to a certain area. In general, since zombies always win if they kill all the survivors, maps sway towards giving survivors the upper hand if they need to complete objectives.

A recurring element on Zombie Fortress maps is breakable walls. Breakable walls work well in a theme and ecstatic sense. They’re also great at granting players a sense of progression. The loud sound a player makes by breaking a wall also tells other players of their presence.

And that’s basically Zombie Fortress in a nutshell. An asymmetrical, thematic gamemode. Brrrrraaaains.

Buildings aren't broken, Drekyl. It's just that you're not allowed to upgrade past lvl 1.
