No Visuals, Just Simplicity

Or laziness, for that matter. The story began when my cousin and I started playing FFVIII in our spare time overseas. After we reached the second disc, where Balamb Garden started to randomly fly to crash cities, there was a good interval where everyone started to say there are quests that could be finished at this part of the game. There were those that required long hours of talking and walking, and then there was Tonberry.

Tonberries can be found on the southern continent on the northern side (it's a prism), where Odin resides, by walking around the maps. Tonberry GF can be acquired after defeating the 20th or so Tonberry minion, so be advised to save after the 19th. Tonberry also grows with level, and so the earlier you get it, the less HP to chunk down (25000-250000HP). I would also like to add beforehand, that this guide is a little subjective, and it is based on personal experience.

We were both lazy. We played in our spare time only, so only by chance we discovered a method NOT to kill the Tonberry King, but to quickly kill Tonberries without killing your visual and finger motor functions. The first thing is to get Zell Diablos, at which his high reaction speed usually gets GFs out pretty damn fast. Diablos did a good 3500 - 4000 damage at around level 20.

Then Squall should cast Mad Rush (I think Ifrit has this) to all party members, which I only found out after obtaining the Tonberry GF that it has Berserk, Protect, and Haste all in one! I think this is a little overpowered, and so you should test it out. Basically what this does is allow AUTOMATIC actions of characters, and since we were lazy, we ordered McDonalds, drank some tea, and ordered plane tickets, leaving the fight for 4mins30secs and then checking back on it. If performed correctly, you should only be pressing keys for the first one minute, and then you have around 4 minutes to spare!! So technically, for 19 Tonberries, you are only playing for around 19 minutes, and the system plays 76 of it for you!

Additionally, each Tonberry probably won't even leave a scratch on you, with its frequent walking up and falling down unintentionally, and mad rush protect cuts down EVERYONE"S GRUDGE and CHEF'S KNIFE into fair damage.

BEWARE that around the 20th Tonberry, with its defeat, the king will appear straight after the battle. DO NOT use mad rush with this Tonberry minion, as the berserk will last forever, and the protect and haste does not! Diablos will miss on the King, and so normal attacks, GFs and cures are necessary for this fight. Once you beat the King, you can do all the doinks you want with Tonberry. :))

Ahha interesting... Last time I played this game on ps1 also ps3. I remembered that I already was at level 50+ also had lionheart weapon already before Garden transformed into mobile. All had to do is ensure Squall stay in low HP and keep whack with special lionheart limit. It is long processing to gathering the items but worthy of my time. Usually one-three break per Tonberry will do, depend on levels.

I usually have Squall and Quistis with low HP and then Micro-Missile + Renzokuken.

Using Squall, Zell, and Irvine's Limit Breaks will deal the most damage.

Either cast Aura on your characters or just wait until their HP is critical and smash the Tonberries with Limit Breaks. Using the low HP technique is probably better as you're not using up Aura magic (which junctions really well). Just be sure to have plenty of Phoenix Downs.

using Diablos magic refine skill to get demi's and using all 3 members of the party casting demi on them kills them really fast, just a suggestion
