Remember when I was playing the game for the first time. I was stocking up ammo, but had no idea how to shoot it with the gunblade. It was later that I found out Irvine uses it.

My understanding is that the shell explodes and causes the blade to vibrate, resulting in extra cutting power or something like that. Pretty much a crit every time. I loved this game, the only annoying bit is that it actually gets harder the more you grind. Final Fantasy VIII is a struggle to stay at a lower level, rather than a push to gain levels and strengthen your characters.
