Intro

MARSOC - MARine Special Operations Command

MARSOC operators are considered SF (Special Forces) as they are highly trained and selected

MARSOC's function/abilities are the same as many other SOFs
  • Direct Action
  • Special Reconnaissance
  • FID (Foreign Internal Defense)
  • IR (Irregular Warfare)
  • Maritime advising/training of other countries

MARSOC operators use the same SOFs insertion/extraction methods:
  • MFF (Military Free-Fall)
  • Static line airborne ops
  • Helicopter (FRIES)
  • Waterborne (SCUBA)
SOCOM
MARSOC is the marine component of SOCOM (Special Operations COMmand)

Army/Navy Special Forces Similarities

MARSOC's 14-man teams are built around the same SFOD-A/SEAL team concept

Similarities:
  • an HQ element
  • ability to split squad into 2 identical teams
  • each team has a mix array of SOF capabilities (medical/communication/demo etc.)
  • learn different languages/cultures
  • participate in specialized training/courses

Training is also similar:
- Army SF - 'Q' course (Qualification)
- Navy SF - SQT course (SEAL Qualification Training)
Critical Skills Operator (CSO)
Individual Training Course (ITC) is a nine-month program

In addition to language training, there are 4 Phases

Phase 1 - basic skill sets required of all special operators
  • land navigation/first aid/patrolling/CAS etc.
Phase 2 - adds to Phase 1 training
  • small boat/scout swimmer/demo/recon ops/crew served weapons etc.
Phase 3 - small arms training
  • learn to plan/execute urban/rural raids
Phase 4 - IR warfare
  • train/advise and operate with a Partner Nation/Irregular force

After completion/graduation, an operator is generally assigned to one of the 3 line BTNs

However, training at the MRR continues for months after arrival
Special Operations Capabilities Specialists (SOCS)
Combat Support - SOCSs are assigned based on their job duties. They are used because of their 'combat multiplier' abilities.

Includes:
  • K-9 handler
  • EOD
  • JTAC/CAS
  • Communication
  • Military Intelligence
Special Operations Combat Service Specialists (SOCS-S)
Combat Service Support - Deliver the logistical needed support to the unit. They are not specialized but are essential to the force.

Duties include:
  • Logistics
  • Transportation

These Marines are typically not permanently assigned to MARSOC
VBSS
"Visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) is the term used by United States military and law enforcement agencies for maritime boarding actions and tactics. VBSS teams are designed to capture enemy vessels, combat terrorism, piracy and smuggling, and to conduct customs, safety and other inspections."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visit,_board,_search,_and_seizure

Conclusion
MARSOC is the latest addition of Special Forces to the U.S. Military and performs many of the same duties as other SOFs (Green Berets/SEALS/Rangers).
