How To: Fuel Your Ship (and get Plutonium)
By Dub
Fuel allows your spacecraft to travel to different planets (an essential part of Starbound). This guide will tell you
1: What fuels your ship,
2: The fuel/item ratio a piece of fuel gives you, and
3: How to obtain plutonium (much easier and lucrative than uranium).

Fuels (with table)
There are 4 fuels I know about in-game (I haven't traveled to the X-sector yet)

  • Unrefined wood
  • Coal Ore
  • Uranium
  • Plutonium

They are in ascending order in value as well

Here is a table with their values

A step-by-step method to obtain plutonium
Required Gear

  • A pick
  • Campfires
  • Butterfly Boost tech

For the purpose of the guide I was on Alpha Pikka 19 V c
Coordinates: X: -36128898 Y: 43788727

I was there to find a Kitchen Counter and was led there by Twilightdusk via the official forums

The Butterfly Boost tech I found in an abandoned apex lab with a jump puzzle in it (I don't have the coordinates). There is a high-tech chest at the end with one tech in it. It is obtainable in the alpha sector.
Step 1:
Install the tech and craft at least 6 campfires.

To install the tech, go to your 3d printer and click tech

Then click on butterfly boost and lock it into slot 1

Then go to the surface
Step 2:
Butterfly boost acts like the jetpack 2.0 in Cave story --It will throw you in whichever direction you are pressing when you press jump a second time.

To use butterfly boost just jump again (and make sure to click on it in your inventory)

The funny thing about butterfly boost is:

When used in small doeses you can fly with it
.
This means you can travel infinitely in the air, and this is a major part of getting the plutonium.

In short small bursts, just propel yourself upwards.

Soon enough you will reach the atsmophere

It is really really cold in space!

This is where it gets tricky.
You must first find an asteroid, land on it, then place three campfires before freezing to death. It takes 3 campfires to keep you warm in space.

3 Campfires.
really cold.
Step 3
I've found that plutonium has a really high spawn rate in meteors, so just jump from one to the other until you find one with the purple ore on it and mine away.

Say goodbye to your fuel problems.

I'm guessing this is outdated, since in the version I'm playing now, doesn't have sectors, or plutonium, unless you have FU

what if i just used the power of mountain dew and doritos to use a tactical nuke on a planet and 360noscope the ores?

I'm really just waiting for the release before updating the guide. If you wanted to make a huge tower, you could.

One problem, YOU NEED A SPACE HELMET!!!

what if i just make a fucking huge tower
Bubble boost works just as well. The energy regen is the crucial part of infinite flight, not the max energy.

Use a nano stove, it has the power and range of 3 campfires.
Also, use a Survival system, it gives you air
