Intro
this guide will explain how to make DOOM 3 better in every aspect via simply tweaking a few settings and installing mods. there is not much text in this but that's so its quick and straight to the point.
Does This Work With BFG Edition?
i have no idea. as i only own regular DOOM III
Do You Need To Patch It To Run Mods?
you should not need this since the Steam Release is the Latest Version. if something does not work however it can be downloaded below
https://www.moddb.com/games/doom-iii/downloads/doom-3-131-fixed-patch-v2
Startup Screen Skip
i have heard a few ways to do this. all are below

1. Use the +disconnect command (console)
2.+com_skipIntroVideo 1 (Add this to launch options.)
3. delete or rename the "boot_sequence.bik" file in the Videos folder.
Stopping Resolution Reset
DOOM 3 cannot be ran in 1280x720 or higher. and if you change it it'll just reset when you boot the game up (even if read only is ticked) thankfully someone found a fix

place the code below into steam's launch options
+disconnect +set com_allowconsole 1 +set r_mode -1 +set r_customWidth 1920 +set r_customHeight 1080 +set r_aspectratio 1

an alternative (and harder) way is to create a CFG file and load it ingame. but if you want to do it i'll list how to below.

go into /base whereever doom 3 is installed and make a notepad doc. put in the following into it is as you need it, not including the parentheticals

r_mode -1 (means putting into custom mode)
r_aspectratio 1 (this changes the aspect ratio 0 is for a 4:3 display, 1 a 16:9 display (widescreen) and 2 a 16:10 display)
r_customHeight 768 (means custom resolution height)
r_customWidth 1366 (means custom resolution width)
r_multiSamples "0" (anti-aliasing)
vid_restart

save the doc as res.cfg.
DO NOT MAKE DOOMCONFIG.CFG READ ONLY
run doom 3 and bring up the console (ctrl+alt+~ for us keyboard)
put in the command: exec res.cfg
FOV [Field Of View]
FOV may not matter to some but it can have a drastic impact on your immersion ingame. below explains how to change it.

put this piece of code into the launch options of DOOM 3 via right clicking the exe, hitting properties then click set launch options

THE FOV FIX >>>> +set g_fov 120

(Alternatively, you could add the line seta g_fov "120" in DoomConfig.cfg)

Before and after screenshots of FOV

AFTER

a more in depth guide showing the other weapons with this new FOV can be found here

Widescreen Resolution
if using the FOV Tweak i would Advise doing this aswell for maximum immersion

Go to <path-to-game>\base\.
Open DoomConfig.cfg.
Find seta r_customHeight "xxx" and seta r_customWidth "xxxx". Change the x's to set your resolution.
Find seta r_mode "x". Change the "x" to "-1".
Find seta r_aspectRatio "x". If your screen aspect ratio is 16:9, change the "x" to "1". If your screen aspect ratio is 16:10 or 15:9, change the "x" to "2".

this guide may also explain this better

No Headbob
Headbob may cause motion sickness for some. and it irritates me. below explains how to get rid of it

create autoexec.cfg file in <path-to-game>\base.
Add the following commands, and save the file.

seta pm_runbob "0"
seta pm_runpitch "0"
seta pm_runroll "0"
seta pm_walkbob "0"
seta pm_bobpitch "0"
seta pm_bobroll "0"
seta pm_bobup "0"
seta pm_crouchbob "0"

Personally I just use "Doom 3: Redux" because its super easy to install, fixes everything and doesn't make any changes to gameplay. Perfected Doom 3 is probably something people should use on their second playthrough.
