The Rifle, .303 Pattern 1914, or simply the Pattern 1914 Enfield or Enfield P14, is a British bolt action rifle designed in 1914-1915 and manufactured by several companies during the World War I period. It was originally developed in response to the Gewehr M.95 rifles the British faced in the Second Boer War. The rifle was unable to be produced on British soil during the war, and production was contracted to the United States with multiple companies, resulting in compatibility issues. However, as the United States entered the war in 1917-1918, the surplus of Enfield P14s were easily converted and used by the Americans into M1917 Enfield rifles to phase out the M1903 Springfield rifles that used the same .30-06 cartridge. The rifles were also used as sniper rifles in replacement of the Lee-Enfield rifles. During World War II, the rifles were repurposed for the British Home Guard, being sent from the United States via the Lend-Lease program.

当美国于1917年参加第一次世界大战时，他们无法如期生产出足够的M1903步枪，当时那三座美国工厂刚好完成英军的P14订单，于是美军决定采用P14的设计，将其改造为使用美国的.30-06弹药。这款武器的正式名称为United States Rifle,cal.30,Model of 1917，到了1918年美军供生产超过200万把M1917步枪，其中有%75配发给了欧洲战场的美军。虽然一开始美军对其性能还有些疑虑，但配有觇孔式后瞄具的M1917还是获得了强大准确的名声。第一次世界大战后，许多M1917步枪被改为民用，并成为民间热门猎枪，而在二战期间，美国把储备起来的M1917重新改造，并作训练用途及通过租借法案向多个国家作出援助（包括英国、菲律宾、法国及中国），这批M1917步枪作喷沙及烘磷酸盐处理，部份更改用桦木制的护木，其中送交英国的国土防卫军（British Home Guard）的M1917印有红色记号以避免士兵装上P14的弹药。
