Intro
Battle Rosters are alpha-numerical numbers that associate a particular Soldier to their unit

If the Soldier changes unit, so does thier Battle Roster (even if there is only minimal change)

BRs, when used in conjunction with other forms of rosters, allow the unit to track other important information:
  • duty position
  • relevant personal information
  • relevant unit information (upcoming training/date of unit entry/leave of absence etc.)
  • special skills (sniper/engineer/pilot etc.)

Soldiers in different units can have the same BR but not if in the same unit
BR Format
The BR is comprised of:
  • a constant single letter unit designation
  • a constant single letter Soldier designation
  • a constant 4 digit Soldier number designation

BR Example

Example:
Generally speaking, BRs are made at the company level
So, every Soldier within that unit and sub-units (PLT/SQD/Fire TM) have the same unit I.D.
For this case let's say we use the letter "A"

In the next part, we take the first letter of the Soldiers LAST name
For this case let's say the Soldier's last name is SMITH

Finally, the last digits of a BR are the service number of the Soldier
For this case we use the service date of the mil-sim Soldier

Example:
PVT John SMITH of Alpha Co.
A(Alpha Co.) + S(first letter of last name) + 0819 (two-digit month and year of service date[AUG 2019])

***PVT J. SMITH has a BR of: AS0819***

How to Use a Battle Roster
Traditionally, the Battle Captain tracks casualties (WIA/MIA/KIA)

This allows for the unit in action to easily track its personnel as the battle rages on

Knowing your personnel status allows you to better manage your resources and replacements

A Battle Captain, along with each echelon of leadership, should be tracking personnel gains/loses

When a Soldier becomes WIA/MIA/KIA, their status should be updated to reflect the lose
A replacement can now be sent in to fill the void

BRs allow for quick identification, without compromising personal information over the radio

BRs avoid confusing names and Soldiers that have the same last name (PVT Smith, SGT Smith etc.)

Conclusion
We see that BRs are a 6 digit alpha-numerical identifier

BRs help to quickly identify a precise Soldier and avoid confusion on the battlefield
