Yes, it is true that John had a violent streak... but he always felt remorse afterwards. Here's an excerpt from Cynthia (John's first wife)'s autobiography, where she discusses John beating up Bob Wooler (The Cavern Clubs' DJ) for implying that he was gay:
A day or two later when he had cooled down he was ashamed. He kept repeating, ‘Oh, God, Cyn, what have I done?’
That doesn't seem like someone who gains sanity when beating things to me.
