Vestaria Saga Character Tier List
By Zephgarus
I want to preface this by saying I don't think any of the units are strictly bad, all of the units have their uses and can be used in the late game in one form or another, this is just my opinion on who I think is reliably useful. Feel free to tell me all the ways I'm wrong in the comments, I'm interested to hear other peoples opinions on some of the characters.

Also here's my youtube channel if you're interested in checking my translations of the Vestaria Saga Gaiden:

S Tier
Units that you should always have deployed when you have access to them.
Troy
I doubt anyone would argue that Troy is one of if not the best overall character in the game. He joins in the Prologue and comes out swinging with solid bases and Multichance. Earlygame Troy will be an invaluable asset to your team and although late game he will fall of a bit due to Knights having relatively low stat caps, he still can more then pull his own in the lategame.

Merida
The only one who can truely contest with Troy is none other then Merida. She joins a little later at Chapter 2 but comes with her personal weapon Dandelion. Although she doesn't come with Multichance like Troy she instead comes with Lightfoot which is an invaluable skill that bumps her MOB up to 9, making her incredibly fast at getting around the map. Her low base STR can be an issue early on but once she starts rolling she can become quite the boss killing machine. Also worth noting if you slap a magic weapon on her she can easily one round most Grand Guards or other high DEF/low RES enemies.

Eddard
Eddard is the last joining character in the game(other then the replacement units if he dies) and normally I'd be like well he missed 90% of the game so can't really call him good. But in the two chapters he is in, he is so impactful and from a pure who's the strongest unit standpoint, he easily takes the cake. Very high bases, 8 MOB, good skills, the Dragonlance and high growth rates, whats not to love in this man? If you are having trouble with Chapter 17 just let Eddard solo it.

Lyttia
Although she comes a little late, a dancer is a dancer. Also her personal weapon Ripwippe is hella useful on some maps and in general protects her from most harm.

Amundsen

A+
Zade
Zade is a suprisingly competent main lord, his bases are solid, good growthrates and has good skills.
He starts with 6 MOB which is not bad for a unpromoted unit and then increases to 8 upon promotion to Archliege, allowing him to traverse the late game maps with ease. He has two personal weapons Edelstern and Emmung, Edelstern acts as a brave sword and allows him to one round nearly anything early game and Emmung is incredibly powerful but you'll likely just be cleaning up some Dragon Knights and the final boss with it(seeing as you get it at the end of the final chapter.) His only real downsides is his lack of 1-2 range from being locked to swords, a late promotion coming in at the end of Chapter 15 and being one of main lords he often has a place to be and will have to leave the fighting to the others.

Theodel & Accorte
Theodel and Accorte are about on equal footing, arguements can be made for either one being better. Theodel joins Chapter 3, Accorte won't join till Chapter 7 but she joins with her personal weapon Dire Thunder Nashorne, Theodel won't get his own personal tome till Chapter 14 and is less useful then Nashorne. Both have similar bases and growths, Theodel gets divine magic, Accorte gets dark magic, dark magic being the better of the two but Theodel has better personal skills. Both of them fill a similar role and I usually find myself fielding only one of the two due not being able to buy a second Holy Vestements until Chapter15x. Although they are both solid units and theres nothing wrong with using both.

Haldyn
Stat-wise Navvare Haldyn is a stronger Zade, similar growthrates, superior bases and a better set of skills. Where he loses out though is his lack of a personal weapon and his 5 MOB which only goes up to 6 upon promotion leaving him in the dust with the rest of the unmounted rabble. Also just like Zade he's sword locked but he at least he has access to greatswords aswell.

Urven
1-2 range, 8 MOB, that's all you really need to know. If Urven joined earlier he would be an easy S-tier, he functions similarly to Merida and Troy with one main exception: HE HAS ACCESS TO 1-2 RANGE BEFORE PROMOTION. He has solid bases, decent growths and Dispel Effects patches up his weakness to horseslaying weapon. Similarly to Troy he'll fall off in the late game a bit due to his low caps and lack of personal weapon but he'll be still able to pull his own.

Dune
Dune leaves a poor first impression on most people due to him starting with a hunting bow that slows his speed down to a measly 2 at base but as soon as you get him a lighter bow he can really start rolling. Dune comes with good bases, good growths, Multichance at lvl 16 & Critical Edge on promotion and at the end of chapter 9 can get his personal bow Bow of Aragoth which is incredibly potent at shooting down dragons and confers to him the ability to canto.

Zayid
Zayid is a powerhouse when you get him and If you choose his personal weapon Agza's Crescent becomes quite the force to be reckoned with. His bases are good but his low growths can impact him in the late game, causing him to have frequent hit issues and he often struggles to one round.
His usefulness early game can not be understated though.
A
Lilia

When Lilia joins in Chapter 6 its time to get forget about that wench Athol, Lilia is leagues more useful then her. She comes with the herb forager skill which that alone makes her worth deploying as she will save you a fortune on healing items, then she comes with debatably the best skill in the game Industry. Unlike a certain useless healer, Lilia can promote into High Priestess and gains access to Divine magic, making her the only combat unit with the Industry skill other then shopbot Ma'aya. Had her in A+ but remembered she has 4 MOB before promotion so dropped her down a tier.

Slayne
Slayne comes with decent bases and good growths and surprisingly the highest STR growth in the game at 45%. His skills are good and although he doesn't have any personal weapons he may as well as he is the only unit capable of using Ballistas. This utility can prove very useful for breaking stalemates and taking out hard to reach siege tomes and ballistas.

Cyltan
Cyltan has good bases and decent growth rates, he has a lack of combat skills but Lightfoot gives him some great maneuverability and Commander which is always useful. His personal weapon Am Solim is fairly good but is outshined in nearly every aspect by Dune's personal weapon. Overall Cyltan is a less powerful Dune that joins later but has the advantage of his superior maneuverability which is not to be underestimated.

Yaeri
Decent growthrates and solid bases, has access to Multichance at base which is her main boon over Rubina. Although not the powerhouse that some units in your army will be the utility that flyers provide can't be underestimated, taking down hard to reach siege tomes & ballistas or simply taking shortcuts to help provide relief to units who are in need of reinforcements.

Rubina
Basically the same as Yaeri but with better growthrates nearly entirely across board, but lower bases. She also has Wrath and Critical Edge which are good skills for sure although I'd argue Yaeri's skill kit is better from Multichance alone. Of the two it'll really depend on RNG which one will become the more useful unit.

Merida(Silken Knight)
Considerably lower on this tier list then her original variation but still ends up being quite a good unit. Her lackluster STR base of 5 is her main drawback but has a whopping 10 base MOB and her 9 MAG out the gate is enough to still make her your best Magic Sword user. She has great growthrates across the board thanks to "Dark Horse" and has the powerful Multichance skill unlike her base iteration. Due to not having her personal weapon Dandelion she often has difficulty killing early on but for has enough utility from her High MOB and Magic Swords to carry her through the game.
B+
Hilda
Hilda joins on the late side but is no slouch with solid bases and growth rates that are overall better then the fighter bros. But that's not what puts her at the top of B+ tier, her skill Critical Reprisal is an incredibly strong ability combined with her stellar personal weapon Justitia she becomes an enemy phase juggernaut.
Aynellia

Growthrates are mediocre and her bases aren't too impressive for a prepromote other then a whopping 19 AGI and respectable 12 DEX. This isn't what makes her strong unit though, she is a good user of magical swords and has a pretty good personal weapon in Alcyone but what really carries her is her strong arsenal of skills including the powerful Multistrike and Glamor ability. Her main weakness is how fragile she is with a base HP of 24 and DEF of 2, although if you give her a Liquid Vitality or two it can greatly increase her ability to stay in the fight.

Siegfried
Decent bases and growths but he comes with his personal weapon Halidole which is a solid tome and personal staff Formalinthe which is very useful buffing tool combined with his Battle Hymn skill.
Siegfried makes an excellent utility unit but still has competent enough magic to remove any threats that he needs to deal with.

Lianka
By far the strongest dagger user in the game, mostly due to having the powerful Multistrike ability combined with her personal weapon Lianka's Claw turning her into a walking delete button.
Other then her 3% MOB growth and high luck base and growth, her growthrates and bases aren't too impressive.
Her main issue is she is incredibly frail with her HP capping out at a measly 24 and DEF at 3. Although her high evasion can keep her safe usually, as soon as something connects she's likely to die.

Helme
Solid late game filler unit with good bases and skills. Helme is the only cavalry unit with access to greatswords and can be quite a useful unit that requires no training.
B
Jean
High STR&HP growths but has meh growths in everything else and better bases then his counterpart Ash. His personal skill Axe Defend is nothing ridiculous but can come in clutch every now and then. In chapter 6 Jean can receive his personal weapon Axe of Amity which although its stats aren't as bonkers as some of the other personal weapons it does give him the powerful skill Industry. Also unique to him Jean will automatically reclass into Goliath at Lvl 15, which will give him an additional 20 HP but lose 1 MOB.

Ash
Much more balanced growthrates then Jean with slightly worse bases. Although his base skill Mettle is meh he gains Lightfoot at Lvl 8 and Herb Forager at Lvl 15 which are both very useful skills. I would consider Jean the better of the two due to one simple reason, Jean gets a personal weapon and Ash does not.

Bonacel
Bonacel is an incredibly useful wall for the first half of the game, you can throw this man into nearly anything and he'll walk away relatively unscathed. His growths aren't even that bad with 40%STR&DEF growth which is all he really wants anyways. Although Prody has superior growths, by the time he catches up with Bonacel it'll be mid-game and guardians are about at the end of their usefulness then. The larger maps and more abundant mages of late game will leave the 4 MOB boys either in the dust or fried alive in their armour.

Sheela
Sheela has good growthrates, great skills and decent bases. She is the best user of magic bows which is unfortunate due to none being available until later in the game if she doesn't get her personal weapon Soaring Flame. Which brings me to the main drawback that comes with her, if you choose her personal weapon in Chapter 3 Zayid will not be able to get his personal weapon.

Hoelun
With unimpressive bases and growths, Hoelun is primarily carried by her ability to canto with her mount and her personal bow Ariadne. Hoelun's biggest flaw is her inability to promote normally, she only is able to class change in Chapter 12 and because its considered a "Class Change" instead of a "Promotion" her level doesn't reset regardless of what she class she chooses. With only 18 levels to grow and a terrible STR growth until she get's Ariadne, Hoelun often struggles to one round even with her personal weapon in the late game.

Jamulan
His low AGI combined with being axe-locked means he gets doubled by most foes but he works as a serviceable filler unit late game. His main selling point is his mount and decent bases.

Neira
A mounted healer that can use bows as well should theoretically be good but her base 3 proficiency prevents her from using any good bows and this late in the game you don't want to be levelling someone just so they can use a half decent weapon. Her 7 MOB staff utility can be nice though.

C
Prody
Prody essentially does everything Bonacel does but worse. As guardians go they're strongest in the early game and just get worse and worse as the game progresses as maps get bigger and mages become more abundant. In the rare chance Prody sees promotion you'll be dissapointed to see that he gains no MOB unlike most foot-locked classes.

Athol
Athol's lack of promotion really dampens what could have been a great unit. She has a high magic growth rate but with no offensive magic to speak of its relatively wasted. She's force deployed in many chapters so you may aswell use her if you've got her but if you have the choice between her and Lilia I'd usually pick Lilia. She also has an interaction with Cezar where once a map if you're funds are under 3000d Cezar will give her Cezar's Lucre if they're standing beside eachother.

Aslanne
A good unit when she joins you in Chapter 5 but then leaves until the final chapter, which she's serviceable in but will be outclassed by most of your units by this point.

Tallan
A good utility unit for the maps he's available you should replace Cezar with him. He's a lockpick with the added benefit of repairing your other units personal weapons.

Ma'aya
If you train the hell out of her the chapter you recruit her and promote her into a Dragon Knight she CAN become a good unit but this requires alot of investment just to get decent unit. The most common actual use for her is just being a shopbot, due to her Master Haggler skill giving her a 33% discount at shops.

Cezar
He picks locks in the early game and gives Athol money. Training him for combat is relatively fruitless due to his 5% STR growth and 3 STR cap, just stick to lockpicking.

Cromwell & Rastelle
These are the two units you get if Eddard dies, unfortunately they're incredibly underwhelming.
Both of them have no ability to trade meaning the equipment they have is what they're stuck with.
Cromwell has decent bases and some defensive skills but struggles to one round anything.
Rastelle on the other hand, isn't killing anything with nothing but an Estoc, her only use is to hit someone with her Paralysis Strike skill so somebody else can safely kill it.
F
Alysia
By all accounts she would be a decent healer... if she didn't leave permanently after Chapter 2. Just use her when necessary in Chapter 1&2.

Nina
Even if she didn't leave immediatly after the chapter you recruit her, she has 3 MOB, 3 FRIGGIN MOB. Bonacel and Prody run laps around this fat tub of lard.

A fun fact: Amundsen came back in the next game. And if you defeat him, he will say: "But... I'm an S tier..."
Gotta hat off for the writer.

Fantastic list, I'm just surprised you didn't make more note of Ripwippe. She's flat-out in a tier of her own because of it.

fake Amundsen

Yeah that summarizes my thoughts on them pretty well Drane and for the case of Nina and Alysia the reason they have their own tier despite being basically non-units is mostly to dissuade someone from feeding excessive experience to them for the limited time they're available.
As its not uncommon for someone to play the first chapter of a FE-style game and then immediately look up a tier list to see who's worth investing in.
Also I'm realizing I haven't added Silken Knight Merida yet to the list, despite the fact I finished that run ages ago now.
DraneBamage May 19, 2020 @ 4:52pm
I'm not exactly sure what Zeph uses as a basis of usefulness but IMO Bonacel is better than Prody. Prody's skill Good Neighbor is useful earlygame no doubt. However, Bonacel's bases are good enough to last until Chapter 15(?) with not much contribution. Constantly using Prody for Good Neighbor means slowing down the game when Troy, Merida, Zayid, all have the means to carry the early-game at a faster rate (Chapters 1-6). There's no denying Prody is useful, just not as useful as when considering bases, investment of resources, and gameplay style.
Böser May 18, 2020 @ 3:20am
its kind of mean to even rate Nina shes not a unit so much as a map objective

also Prody is much more useful than bonacel by the fact that any unit standing next to him with decent defence becomes Bonacel. And Bonacel ceases to take physical damage all together
Rannen Apr 26, 2020 @ 2:43pm
I agree with FishyFin entirely about Prody. He became one of my most useful units for his Good Neighbor alone, not to mention his ungodly 24 defense by the end of the game. I found him so useful that I actually gave him the MOB+ consumable to raise him up to 5.
FishyFin Apr 1, 2020 @ 6:07pm
Prody can become your best baby sitter. You can rush him to lv15 so he can have the best leader skill you can get which is Good Neighbor 2. It +5 DEF/RES to adjacent allies which is by no mean small. With that, units with potential at high level can start training with ease thus snowballing your army overall strength.
