NJ Transit F7A

New Jersey Transit is one of the largest commuter rail operations in the United States. As you can probably tell, it operates in the state of New Jersey, with a large portion of their services continuing into New York City (and therefore NY State). The lines on the network were inherited from the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Central Railroad of New Jersey, New York and Long Branch Railroad and Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Starting in the 1960s, the New Jersey Department of Transportation began subsidizing the commuter rail lines. Conrail were operating the services by 1976, and NJ Transit took its current form in 1983.

Today the NJT network consists of 11 lines and 164 stations. Although most of the network is in northern New Jersey, the company also operates a line of Atlantic City to Philadelphia. Curiously the Atlantic City Line is completely seperate from the rest of NJT's passenger lines. The line I am most familiar with is the North Jersey Coast Line, which goes from either New York Penn or Hoboken Terminal to Bay Head. The NJT network is split into two primary sections, the Hoboken and Newark. Until Secaucus Junction station was opened in 2003, there was no passenger interchange between the two systems.

As is typical with most commuter rail systems, NJT operates push-pull consists. By this, I mean that the trains have a locomotive on one end and a cab-car on the other. This allows for faster turnaround times, and therefore the ability to fit more services into the day's schedule.
