Starting the Mod
Welcome to the short, but hopefully informative guide on how to get into Persistent World or PW as I shall be calling it from now on. I am Uhtred Lord of Bebbanburg Head of the Warlords of Bebbanburg which is a PW and Native Clan, also I have been playing PW for over a year now and have admined on several servers. So don't worry you are in good hands.

To start off make sure you follow the installation instructions for the Mod (it is the same as all other installs for Mount and Blade Warband). When you start up the game it is best to create a new character, being that PW is a Roleplaying Mod and most people will approach you in a more friendly way if you are (for example) John_Swift, rather than 1te_Rec_Uhtred or any other regimental tags from NW.

After creating the character and clicking on the Join Game button you will be faced with the familiar Mount and Blade Multiplayer Screen, and there is quite a few PW servers, try and filiter out empty servers and make sure it only looks for PW servers otherwise it could take a while to find one. My advice would be go to a server that has around 30-40 players on it to begin with, this is because there should be at least one admin or guide on there and there is not too many people that you just become another number.

Starting Out
Hopefully Joining the server wasn't too bad, now you are in it you may want to check if you PC is handling it ok. The reason is PW is a large mod, but what kills performance is the size of the maps there are up to 6 or 7 castles one which is normally in a large town, this can cause havoc on some rather powerful machines, so If you are lagging the best idea is to relog with Directx7 on and lowered textures.

If everything is ok, your first step is to find work, without work you won't make money which will severely hamper your ability to play.

One thing you MUST remember is that PW is NOT native Multiplayer, you CANNOT just kill someone, you must have a reason, getting revenge is NOT a valid reason, if you do either of these you are likely to be banned.

Now, it is a good idea to Press Tab and hold it bringing up the player list, the list in PW is different as it has many different tabs, two that stay the same are Commoners and Outlaws, Commoners are a risk to play as you can lose your class when you die and some classes are expensive, Outlaws is not as much of a risk as most servers do have a policy of Outlaws not being KOS (killed on sight) however some people don't know this so there is a chance you will die.

My advice would be to head to the village on the map, there is always one and it is normally protected by the server staff, meaning that people cannot capture it, however press BACKSPACE and ask the admin team if that is the case. Villages can be raided so be warned but the village is a much safer option than the castles and other factions.
Working in the Village
So hopefully you have gone to the village or are at least planning to, well the first thing to do is look out for fields in and around the village, if these are empty you could be in with a great little profit and some work to keep you busy.

Go speak to the Lord of the village, there name will be highlighted yellow in the Village tab on the player list, ask if they have work on offer, most will tell one something to do or that you can work the fields. Depending on what they ask you depends on where you go next in the guide, this part covers farming and food making.

So if the lord says either go do what you want or we need some farmers/serfs you will want to look for the serf training point for the village, this is a pitchfork and when you go near and look at it, it comes up with a load of information about stats for the Serf class. the main thing you need to know is that it normally costs 150 gold or denars. Hold F and wait for the bar to finish and then you would have trained as a serf and joined the village faction.

Now look for the fields, they are large rectangular brown areas, near them should be wheat sacks, there should be two, one says import at the bottom of it and costs you 120 gold and the other costs around 50 but has a stockpile so they could be empty. Once you have the sack of seeds in your hand go to the field and throw about 4 or 5 seeds on it. There is normally two fields so use the other 5 on the other field. Now you just have to wait.

My advice to keep money coming in is to buy a woodcutter's axe and chop some trees down, however look for and check the stockpile of braches and wood blocks, if they are full you may to avoid this step and just wait for the field to grow, if they have space then buy the axe for about 350 gold and head to a tree, it should say cut down and come up with a yellow health bar, swing at the tree and you will soon see branches, being that you can only carry four items its a good idea to take 3 branches at a time back to the stockpile. When the tree gets to 50% health it should collapse and then you will start to get wood blocks again take three at a time. Once the tree has been cut down you should have a fair amount of money on you. To keep it safe take it to the nearest bank and hold F again until the bar becomes full and you should deposit 5,000 gold. In the meantime those seeds you planted would now be crops!

The next thing you want to do is look for a scythe or at least a sickle, they will all be in the same place, there will be a building with some clothes armour and weapons in. I would advise the scythe but the sickle may be the option to go for with no scythes, the scythe costs around 550 gold and the sickle 175 gold (all prices are rough), however the scythe cuts quicker and makes it easier on the farm. Go to the field and start to swing at the floor of the field, you will soon see bunches of wheat appear. It is now up to you what you do with them.

There are three main things you can do with wheat.
1. Use it to make flour.
2. Use it with boards and saddles to make horses.
3. Sell it straight to the Wheat Stockpile.

1. Making flour is easy enough, take 3 wheat and head to a grinding mill hold f and you will make a flour sack, take to the village tavern and sell it on the stockpile or straight to the tavern owner if needs be.
2. Making horses is also easy enough but is a bit more complex. To make the basic Sumpter Horse, take a wood block and process it on a bench it will give you 4 boards with you can use, it is 1 wheat and 1 board for a sumpter horse. A saddle horse which is the next level up is one saddle and 1 wheat but there may be no saddles. to make a cart horse it is 1 board and 2 wheat. Doing this will make a fair bit of money and is very useful to the server too.
3. Selling the wheat straight is easiest but you don't make much money at all.

With all of these use two wheat and craft two wheat sacks by holding F on the wheat sacks that have a stockpile.
Crafting
You may get asked to craft or go smith, now this is an expenisve and rather difficult thing to do as a newcomer. This is because there are three levels of crafting Classes, the First is Craftsman, and is more suited to tailoring and doing odd jobs more associted with farm hands, it costs 800 gold to become a craftsmen.

The next level up is an Engineer, the engineer can create walls, towers and ladders and are really useful in a siege for the attackers, they can also make most of the items in the game too, so it's a really useful class to be to make money, however it costs 2500 gold to become a Engineer and the problem is the cost of the Materials needed to create the items.

The final level in the Crafting group is Master Smith, as a new player you cannot afford the 7,500 gold price tag and many lords and people are not willing to pay out the price when you could go Engineer to do the same thing.

Before even going to train as a crafter check the stock for leather, wood and iron. Without these you might as well stop and save your money, if you do see them empty make a note and then read how to get that material later on. If there is materials this is a good plan for each class.

1. As A craftsman i would create a few saddles, very easy to make 1 Board and 1 leather roll, saddles are not commonly made but are used to make saddle horses so sometimes the stockpile is empty meaning you get more gold for making them. Another Good thing to make is Leather Boots again simple to Make just 2 leather peices which is made by cutting 1 leather roll and then you can make two lots of Boots. They are always in demand and will help make you a good profit.

2. As an engineer look for mail or leather Armour to make, particulary a popular one, a good item would be the tribal warrior outfit, again only 1 leather roll and is very popular on most servers so it should keep you busy, also look at making spears and war spears 1 iron piece which is made by smelting iron ore which gives 2 iron bars, smelt 1 iron on the LEFT side of the Forge and then you have 2 small iron bars smelt on th Same side to get 2 iron pieces. With those iron pieces take a wooden pole (made by processing a branch on the bench) and hold f on the spear et volare money!

3. As a Master Smith presuming that you have gold to buy materials the Best idea is to make popular armour like the Engineer but also to make Two Handed Weapons, being that they are very popular in game and very easy to make 1 long iron bar is enough to do the Trick.

Cooking and Brewing
You may get asked to cook food and make drinks for people, this is because if you lose health you cannot go back to full health without food or Drink. There are 4 different food types: Bread, Meat, Fish and Meat Pies. There are also two different types of drink.

1. Bread is the Easiest foodstuff to make 1 flour and a bucket of water over a oven will make 4 or 5 loafs, the only problem is you cannot sell bread to a stockpile you can only store them and sell them direct to people, however if you shout 'Fresh Bread for Sale' and sell them between 150-300 gold (depending on the price of flour) you will make easy money.

2. Fish comes in 3 ways raw, salted or cooked, to catch fish you need a net and a fishing spear and you have to stand in a river and sta at the net, you will get fish but it can be time consuming. You can then cook the Fish straight away over an oven and eat, however you can sell Salted Fish to a Stockpile. To Salt both FISH and MEAT you need a salt sack which is quite expensive then take the fish or the meat to the salting table and hold f.

3. Meat comes from Cows, Boars and Deer, you need either a Butchering Knife or Cleaver, if you are going just for meat use a cleaver and when you kill the animal hit the blood spot on the floor and meat will appear. Again as with fish cook it and eat it or sell it direct to people. Or Salt it and sell it to a stockpile.

4. Meat Pies are the best Food in PW, and are fairly easy to make, just get some raw meat and a flour sack and take over to an oven, cook it and you will get several pies, However as with bread there is no stockpile, but people will be snatching the pies from your hand.

1. Beer! BEER! Beer the quickest drink to make in the game, it requires 2 wheat and a waer bucket, take it to a brewer which is a large object in villages which has a tube going into what looks like a large tub and hold f, You will get one Beer Barrel. You CANNOT drink that and get your hunger bar, you must serve on a bar, however you can sell barrels to a stockpile and they can make a lot of profit.

2. Wine is more time consuming but just as easy to make. First you need a knife, there should be some in the village called knifes, take that and hit the vineyards that say prune again there will be a yellow health bar, wait until that is empty, you have to wait a little while for grapes to grow but once they have take 3 to a wine press and press them. This gives you a must barrel, you need 3 must barrels to get a wine Barrel. Again selling is the same as Beer,
Getting Resources
There are 4 major resources in PW and this section explains how to get them, well 2 of them as Wood has already been explained in the earlier section.

1. Iron - It's quite easy to get however it is very valuable and many people go to get it so the stockpiles may be full, iron is a metallic looking rock found near mountions or certain areas, by taking a mining pick you can get the iron from the veins, I advise you take a cart with you too and maybe a guard, most people will be happy to help for a little bit of the share.

2. Linen is easy to make but the problem is a lot of People do it so again check stockpiles before starting, To get linen you first need flax which is a blue flower in large groups, go up to it and it will say Harvest, hold f and you will get a Flax bunch, take this to a spinner and spin to get 2 linen thread and then take 1 thread to a weaver to get 2 linen Cloth.

3. Leather - Leather is the Hardest to get, you have to train as a huntsmen which does allow you to use a bow and as I have said you need a Butchering knife and to kill an animal, watch out for boars they are difficult to kill and will end up killing you if you're not careful. After stabbing the aninmal's bloodspot you will get Raw Hide, take this to a tanning spot and you will get 2 Leather Rolls.

Leather is your best chance at success as many people don't bother with huntsmen and the stockpiles are empty most of the time, the rather consist emptiness of Iron piles is balanced with the fact that you are likely to be robbed and killed for you resources, and linen is always fully stocked so my adives is kill a few deers and get leather,
Next Steps
That's Pretty much it the next steps would be war, the combat system works as the same as native however armour counts for more, it is advised you join a large faction while playing, its even better to join a clan as they will look out for you and also give you someone to work with most of the Time.

Being the Head of the Bebbanburg Clan I can tell you that we are always recruiting and have regular trainings and our own server for you to try out the Mod on. If you are Interested Apply on the PW Nexus and PW Union Forums.

But why not paly a bit and try things out you never know you could be the next big clan leader!!

I don't have M&B Warband purchased on Steam but from the official website, is that why I can't join? because I keep getting kicked BEFORE I even make it on the server when I press connect.
