Starter ship
First ship:
- Good stats
- Not many slots for equipement

It's with this one that you'll have a lot of chances to survive the beginning but you'll have to buy a better ship at some point because the weapons/gear is limited:

------------------------------------------

Second ship:
- Stats are inferior compared to the first ship
- Lot of slots for equipement

This is a very good ship for most of the game. That's the one I use in perma death mode. Note that here I changed it's armaments.

------------------------------------------

Third ship:
- More hull point than the second ship but less shields, inferior stats compared to the first ship
- Not a lot of equipement slots

I'll say this one is good if you want a challenge.

-----------------------------------------

Then under your ship stats you have the option to change your starting armaments, very early missiles are pretty good because they ignore shields and most ennemies you'll encounter at the beginning won't have a flak to destroy your missiles, if you are pretty close to the ennemy most of your missiles will hit.
Your captain
I'll let you decide what you want here, this is your journey after all but be carefull some perks are
very good and some negative perks can be pretty bad, you gain more perks during your journey.

Let's say if you have a perk that increase your shields or hull points you will be a bit more tanky.

In-game
Now this is very important and it seems the prologue don't talk about that: When you have the control of your ship press " I " to open the inventory, select the crew tab, click on your captain/crew and then to the half right of the screen you can see that you can level up a perk, I won't go into details on what perk you can level up because in the end it's all up to you but here's why it's important to start doing this early in order to survive:

Your captain skills and how to upgrade:

---------------------------------------------

Scientists have a perk that boost shields, so they can increase your shield regen and durability meaning you'll be able to take more hits.

--------------------------------------------

Specialists can increase your loots.

---------------------------------------------

Engineers can increase the speed and hull durability of your ship.

---------------------------------------------

And finally you can go right to the station in order to buy crews (like more scientists to increase your shields even more) and weapons/gear if they sell that.

Don't forget to check your crew every now and then to see if they earned a level.
Conclusion
- Pick the ship of your choice.

- Make your captain (some perks are better obviously)

- Start with missiles for an easy beginning.

- Level up your crew right at the start.

- Save money for repairs.

- Improve your ship.

Btw you can also upgrade your weapons/gear, it's a little boost at the beginning but it's not required this early.

I hope this guide helped you.

@Rachaninov I don't know, it's been some time since I've played this game and it's still in devellopment, so my guide may be outdated even if it's just the very early game. Plus maybe there is already more than 3 ships, if I have time to redownload the game and play it and people need a topic on that subject because no one else made an up to date guide I may do it, but I can't promise it.

I should have written on wich version of the game I was playing........ it's my mistake, but I very rarely writte guides.

Its much easier now enemy cannon accuracy has decreased. I usually pick mercury thallium as speed important to dodging enemy fire at beginning

@G3Bishop To be honest I'm waiting a bit for more content and I have quite a lot of games to finish (along some to playtest wich are the priority) but since the game doesn't have that much guides, possibly because the game is not finished hence guides may become obsolete, I'll probably try to make some, but so far I don't think that the game need something more than a beginner guide right now, at some point I wanted to write a guide about how to survive combat but it was mostly RNG and I believe that devs have made a bit of change, I've played on perma death mode so maybe a guide with some tricks and tips would help the community. Otherwise yeah the game is great ! ^^

Thank you for putting this together! How do I map missiles to my number keys? I can't seem to equip them other than assign then to a ship slot.

@oddball Normally a death results in loading the last save (which tends to be previous jump or station connection) but will give you 100% health regardless of ship status at that point. I think it's a bug but it could also be a "this was too hard so let's help the player out a bit" feature.

Now only if there was a way for captain status modifiers to be removed...

@oddball I never tried that because I play with Perma death, but that's pretty cool to know. That will help people that are not sadistic people like me XD
