Best of the West, Worst of the East, 1982

Description
-In popular culture and even in political circles, undoubtedly primed by the experience of submarines swarming to cut the lines between North America and Europe in two world wars, the image of the USSR's submarine fleet in any conventional third one was of repeating the feat of its German predeccsors, rushing en masse into the Atlantic to block off NATO from American resupply.
The truth was that Soviet naval doctrine was near-entirely defensive in nature, built around protecting its strategic assets first and foremost. A now-declassified CIA document from the 1980s, at the height of the Cold War, guessed this and predicted that any attempts at naval interdiction would be:
-Done primarily with diesel submarines, as newer nuclear ones were needed for their defensive duties, and older ones too vulnerable,
-Conducted with small quantities of said submarines due to logistical concerns and enemy strength.
-Unable to sink large quantities of merchant ships.
Now is the time for the player, as a Red Banner Northern Fleet submarine commander, to see how accurate the predictions were. The Cold War has, while not yet collapsing into a "hot" full-blown land war, simmered into a more intense form, with naval action (and casualties) high. Second-line units face the best technology and training, as the US rushes to reinforce Europe in the wake of a new crisis. Can the worst of the east land blows on the best of the west?
(Scenario author's note. This scenario uses Lua to generate different numbers of Soviet submarines for the player.)
