Motor City Online was a MMO racing game developed between Need for Speed 4 and Need for Speed 5 and released back in 2001. Sadly the servers were shut down more than 15 years ago and the game is nowhere to get - and even if it was, it'd be pointless since you cannot play it.

I do respect the work and effort of the original authors. That means if whoever owns the rights to the original files – I suppose it's EA – sees this release as some sort of copyright infringement please tell me and I will remove it ASAP since I have absolutely no interest in harming anyone with this – and that includes myself. I release these cars because they are a great addition to Cities: Skylines. Since the game's situation is pretty sad (see above) there are countless huge Motor City mods (offering all or most of the cars and even the menus) for various games all around the net: e.g. for SCGT, F1, NfS4, SimBin titles, Flatout and other games. Plus there are countless conversions of single cars for games like the Midtown Madness series, older GTA titles, Carmageddon 2, plus plus plus... This doesn't change a thing though so as I said: one message and the pack is gone.

Although I was working with the original MCO files there are some guys I want to thank for their great work. There is a guy called Sniper who released most of the MCO cars for Need for Speed 4. He put much work into his releases, added some 3D stuff, wheels, drivers and whatnot. Thanks also goes to a guy called Alejo, who made a huge MCO Mod for Sports Car GT. As I said I didn't use their work but it was the inspiration I need to start this project. So... I bet you're asking yourself: what did this huy do and what can I expect from it? The cars released for Motor City Online are – measured by todays standards – low poly. When I started this project I thought – with the words of Jeremy Clarkson - „how hard can it be?“ Well... it was way harder than I thought. Depending on what Matthew Medina posted on Deviant Art the cars were modeled using die-cast models: „These were scanned in from die-cast replicas with a 3D scanner, then manually reduced from vertex clouds to polygon meshes.“ The result had to be pretty accurate I guessed. Unfortunately they're not. From what I can tell they didn't use proper die cast models but matchbox or hotwheels cars what means that most of the cars had wrong proportions, sometimes to a point where it barely resembled the original car. So after all it took me months to get all these cars done. Besides the original plan of converting meshes and textures I had to heavily edit the meshes using blueprints to get the proportions to look at least halfway like the original cars. I had to create wheels, stuff like license plates and exhausts and I made variations like sedan versions, farmtrucks and so on. For the technical part: meshes use around 1500 tris per model, textures are 256x256 pixels. The cars look a bit blocky here and there measured on todays standards but they do the job. The amount of cars is... well, it's a lot. With clean vehicle versions, rusty vehicle version, special versions and props for everything there are approximately 200 assets. So I really hope you will enjoy using them as much as I did creating them. : )
