Combat Basics
If you haven't played the game at all then you will deffinatly want to start by playing the tutorial.
The tutorial covers all the main classes and basic moves, so playing this is (imo) a must before entering multiplayer servers.

Attack system:
There are two main types of combat in Chivalry. You guessed it, Melee and Ranged.

The melee system involves three main attacks;

Slash (lft mouse btn):
This is the most common attack you will see people using. This is probably due to the its position on the mouse and its ease of aiming.
  • It can be used to keep multiple emenies away due to it sweeping through the area.
  • Deals medium damage.
  • Uses Medium Stamina
caution!
Watch your team mates when using this attack!

Overhand (scrwhl dwn):
This attack is devastating when timed correctly and is probably the safest option when fighting amoungst team mates.
  • Hardest to aim, and usually will strike only one attacker.
  • Deals High damage.

Stab (scrwhl up):
This attack is the hardest to time a block against (especially when the attacker is moving in and around the block).
  • This attack has the longest range.
  • Deals Medium Damage.
  • Uses Medium Stamina.

The range system;
When playing range, you always need to be aware of your surroundings, you can be killed in one strike by most attackers.
There is one attack type for range, but there are several other factors involved in this:
  • Bullet drop - this effects all the weapos differently.
  • Aiming and crouching - these both affect accuracy drastically.
  • Bullet cam - You can watch a bullet's flight path, great for making adjustments.
This is probably the most important type of combat to practise in the tutorials (It will be much easier to learn how the weapon fires without people attacking you).

Blocking (rht mouse btn):

Blocking will save your life, I suggest learning this very well, Blocking multiple attacks with a single block can save your life, of give your team the precious seconds needed to arrive and overwhelm your enemies.
When it comes to blocking attacks there are two differant approaches (listed further down in more detail);
  • With a Sheild, and
  • Without a Sheild.
The main difference is in the speed you wish to move and attack at. If you want to be able to move in and out fast then you don't want a Shield. If you want to be safer and perhaps backup your team mates then you might want to take a Shield. This allows you to create a barrier between enemies and weaker teammates, giving them the time they need to recover, and giving you backup in case you need it.
Keep in mind, blocking is derectional, so when you are blocking an enemy's strike you have to make sure it stays on your screen (if you play in first person), and dont look at your enemies face . . .

Without sheild:
  • Block stays up for a limited time and can't be used constatly. This means you have to wait for your attacker's blade before you block.
  • Blocking uses stamina whether or not it is used to block a strike or not . . . so wait.
Cannot block ranged attacks

With Shield:
  • Sheilds have a larger blocking radius so they are easier in general to block with.
  • Blocking stays up for as long at you have the button pressed down.
  • Stamina is depleted when your shield is struck.
  • Depending on the severity of the strike, your shield block may go down for a moment (which is long enough for you to die).
Can Block Ranged attacks

Kicking (f):

Kicking is very usefull in a lot of situations. It can be used to break an enemy's attack, or to push back an attacker.
Make sure not to forget about it!
Stamina and Health
Stamina and Health
Health is pretty self explanatory... You need it to live.
Stamina is very important and easy to forget about. It is used for attacking, defending and moving around in general. Having a high amount of health can mean nothing if you have no stamina.

Important points:
  • You receive (and deal) damage based on where a strike lands (on the target) and with how much force.
  • Armoured targets receive more damage from blunt weapons, and un-armoured targets take more damage from blade weapons.
  • Stamina is depleted whenever you attack and miss, kick or jump.
  • Sprinting, taking damage and any of the above will cause stamina to STOP regenerating.
  • Blocking with no stamina causes you to become stunned.

Note:
  • I have linked two videos illustating that stamina won't regenerate as stated above
  • I created this section mainly to stress the importance of stamina
Classes
Classes:
There are 4 main classes; Archer, Man at Arms, Vangaurd, and Knight. Each with their own abilities and attributes. Each has their own selection of weapons too (not covered in this guide/discussion)

Archer:
  • The is the only class with unrestricted access to ranged weapons
  • No Shield (Except when Javelin is equip).
  • Lowest Health
  • Highest Move Speed
Man at Arms:
  • Has "Dodge" ability (top video)
  • Has Shield
  • Low Health
  • High Move Speed
Vangaurd:
  • Has "leap" or "launch" ability (bottom video)
  • No shield
  • High Health
  • Low Move Speed (Except at full sprint)
Knight:
  • Has full Large weapon access
  • Has Shield
  • Highest Health
  • Lowest Move Speed
Advanced Combat
Advanced Combat:
There are a number of features not covered before in the melee combat system, these are a few:

Combos:
You are able to follow up your attacks quickly with combos. Just use your next attack while your last attack animation is playing (sometimes it can be tricky to time).
Most attacks can be followed by any other attack.

Alternate Attack ( Alt + (attack key) ):
By pressing "Alt" while attacking you can do an alternate attack. Alternate attacks generally take slightly longer to pull off, so someimes your enemy will mistime the block. Additionally, alternative attacks can allow you to get around an enemy's guard in a way he didn't expect.

Faking:
Faking is great for making your opponent mistime a block, allowing you to land a follow up attack (In my opinion, faking is best used in combination with the stab attack, because it seems to be the hardest to judge).

Unexpected Kicks:
When an enemy is waiting for you to attack, throw him off by kicking him in the face!

Ducking (ctrl + balls):
"High Risk, but High Reward" says it all. To duck you must throw all hope to the wind, and when your enemy's strike is on its way press control to crouch, then face your screen away from the direction of the blow and toward the ground.... Wait a second, and come up striking.
Definitely the most satisfying move to do. But is definitely best used as a last resort (you can still duck even when you are stunned, just dont try too early and allow them time to adjust).

Note: video unrelated
Multiplayer
Multiplayer GameMode/Servers:
I added this little section just to let new players know which game modes/servers are the most new player friendly, and what to expect in each:
  • Duel Servers: If you want to build your overall skills and practise new moves, as well as learn by watching.
  • Free For All (FFA) Servers: If you want to swing at people with no bias, requires the least skill for the most fun.
  • Last Team Standing: Best for teamplay, testing yourself and practising caution.
  • Team Objective: objective driven teamplay.
  • Team Deathmatch: No objectives, just teamplay.
I reccomend trying them all and seeing what you like best.
So, what are you waiting for? the best way to learn is by practising

Hey man, I imagine its probably due to the positioning of your blade during strikes.
A lot of people when performing a slash attack will pull the screen to the left or right depending on when they want the strike to land. You can easily make people block too early if you use this technique.
For example, if you start your swing with the enemy in the centre of your screen, you can land the blow much earlier if you turn to your left.
Using this method properly you can even stike the same target twice if you are fast and precise enough with your mouse movements. I might film some fottage in the next week or so explaning this better. For now, I hope this helps :)

Question: why am I soo slow compared to everyone else regardless of class? I try to move in for an attack, but no matter what weapon I use, my arm is up in the air for days before I can land my strike, and in combat, most enemies can parry and attack within the same second, whilst im still a year late with my counter-attacks.
