This is an excellent option, especially if you intend to start a kingdom by just storming a castle or town. Since you don't have a fief, release every lord you capture for honor and relations. In my experience, either join up with whoever is in the most wars at any moment, or join whatever kingdom is fighting the kingdom you eventually plan to attack when starting your own.
Also, starting some time back, companions returning from Right to Rule quests brought troops back with them.
~Jatu Raiders, generally, are a good source of armor, lances, horses, and the occasional loot chest. My recommendation for to make it easy is fielding a lot of archers and light cavalry, which is quite easy to field
~in my personal experience, the Baccus Empire is my recommendation for newcomers. Snake Cult are generally very easy to deal with, apart from anaconda knights and above. Not to mention, Legionaries are extremely powerful and they're some of the only faction based troops that carries crossbows, which is good on the defense
hope that helps a little bit
