Foreword
This guide is a compilation of various advice given by forum members. All posts/comments used to make this guide will be linked in the credits section of this guide.

This is tested working on my system as of 5/25/2019.

My system:
Windows 7 Home Premium
SteamVR v1.4.18
HTC Vive (Standard model)
Revive v1.4.2

Setup
1. Download Revive 1.4.2 from here[github.com]
  • Grab the ReviveInstaller.exe and run it. It will guide you through the installation process.
  • You MUST get Revive 1.4.2! Newer/older versions may not work.

2. Download Oculus runtimes from here[drive.google.com] (Credit u/XmisterC for uploading the files)
  • Make sure to grab both LibOVRRT32_1.dll and LibOVRRT64_1.dll
  • Drop them in your DiRT Rally folder (.../steam/steamapps/common/DiRT Rally)
  • If you find newer runtimes, they may not work. Use these.

3. Start SteamVR
  • After starting you will likely get a message on your taskbar saying Revive did not start correctly. This is OK. This message is appearing because you did not install the Oculus software.

4. Right click Revive on your taskbar and select "Patch...".
  • Navigate back to your DiRT Rally folder.
  • Click on "drt.exe" and click open. Overwrite any files if necessary.

5. Close the SteamVR software.
  • If you do not close SteamVR before trying to boot DiRT Rally, the game will crash.

6. Launch DiRT Rally from your Steam library.
  • This will automatically start SteamVR.
  • If you get any warning about launching the game in VR, ignore it and press "yes".
  • You will have to launch DiRT Rally with SteamVR closed every time otherwise the game will crash.

7. Make sure to click on the DiRT Rally game window to focus it.
  • Sometimes the game will launch out of focus. If it's not in focus your controls will not register.

8. Put on your Vive headset and enjoy!
  • The game will appear to be in theater mode. This is normal, the game does not switch over to full VR until you are at starting line.
  • All controls should be the normal, non-VR controls.
  • If you need to reset your view press ctrl, or the equiviilant if you have rebound it.

there is something screwing the VR performance in this game hard, my GPU & CPU are barely over 50% usage & certain tracks just stutter like all hell, when i test the same track in 4K with the same or higher settings it doesnt miss a beat

I tested lots of different Revive versions and installation scenarios. This is the only one that worked for me! The game runs and looks great on my Index. Much better than DR2 which I bought recently but it turns out its Steam VR implementation is botched. Thank you!

Not too sure on that one. I would check if all the files are in the right place, did the drt.exe get patched correctly, etc. You could delete the exe, verify files with Steam and try to patch it again.

I know it's not ideal but you could also just follow the guide again just in case you may have missed something the first time.

If all else fails, here is some recommended troubleshooting for Revive here. [github.com]

Thank you for this! I got the game to work with my Index this way. Not having to install Oculus software was a nice bonus.

I was initially unable to center my view properly, both with the in-game hotkey and with SteamVR's reset function. Uninstalling OpenVR Advanced Settings seemed to fix this somehow. Not sure if I had a some messed up settings or an incompatible version, but at least it works now.

Are you clicking the icon in the taskbar like this? If you are and find things still not working, I recommend looking at this revive guide here.
