TIPS AND TRICKS
INTRODUCTION

Welcome to FlatOut a Destructitive Rally/Derby Competition in which you get to participate and get a ton of money as a reward for destroying the scenario and being 1st place, Putting objects out of place renders bonus revenue and in consequence more money for tuning or buying a new car from the Car Dealer. Let's begin by Guiding You in Driving.

SETUP

Before setting foot into your car, you need to change the settings of your game go to options in the main menu go into controls and configure your controls make sure it looks like the screenshot on the left.

If you have a controller or a Steering Wheel configure it like the PS2 version (If you use a controller) or Configure the Steering Wheel to what the controls would be if you had the Pedals and the Shifting Gear + Steering Wheel of a car (If you have a Steering Wheel), EX: Accelerator pedal = W, Brake Pedal = S and the Clutch Pedal = Handbrake.

Setting Up your settings select your handling type: Professional or Normal, choose whatever suits your preference, and then select Auto or Manual Transmission, If you use Manual Transmission your car will start at the N on the Shifting Gear, So when the GO! shows up on your screen rapidly shift your gear up. With that detail now explained, let's talk about racing...

RACING

Powersliding in a race is important, you can powerslide by pressing SPACE on your keyboard or simply use A or D to shift the car's weight allowing it to Powerslide (on a Dirt Track this move can be useful), Sometimes braking on a corner is better than using the handbrake so keep that in mind! Also the best timing for braking is before the corner, on the straight line before it, while entering it brake, or do a late braking but be careful, late braking is rewarding (but a fatal mistake if you miss it)! Stick to the apex of the corner and turn, hit the accelerator a few times and then finally hold it again after exiting the corner!

If you're on Professional and Oversteer, try to countersteer with A and D.

If you ever Understeer, try tapping the nitro button to get some speed!

Watch the opponent's mistakes and learn from them! On a unrelated note, the music of this game is so good that it helps you concentrate, so turn it on to make the race a rush or make you feel like a badass, Intense Eurobeat can also help if you don't like the music of this game (But who wouldn't like the game's soundtrack it's so damn good and nostalgic, i basically grew up with it).

Also don't forget to ram a fence or any similar object for bonus revenue and Nitro Boost! Nitro Boost is useful when you commit a mistake and get dragged behind, When that happens the Nitro Boost will be your friend and will get you covered, just press that button.

If there's a enemy driver trying to take your 1st place, Tap him a little to back him off a bit or use brute strength, If there's a opening and a nearby gutter use it to overtake the opponent without having to sacrifice your car, just watch out with the damn rocks and/or barrels (If there is any).

Be on the look out for shortcuts, sometimes the not so obvious shortcut is key to the victory, some shortcuts have big risk but big rewards! Most shortcuts are not necessarily a jump but if it is one, make sure to adjust the car in the air before you land by tapping the brake button a bit and steer it to the right direction in mid air to perform a perfect landing, landing properly is a important skill to learn, ya' know?

Driving in dirt tracks can be a bit of a problem, but if you know how to drive properly, this may not be a problem, but if it is, it can be fixed by tuning your car, i'm gonna explain tuning in a bit but before i explain it...

TIPS AND TRICKS PT. 1.5

DRIVERS

We're gonna be talking about your competitors a lot and we'll also give you an insight in your player character.

You (Male): You are part of an opposing racing group than the Female Player, however the name of it is unknown. The male player pretty much wants the same thing as the Female Player, Cars and Money as well as Prizes won from the competitions. Both start with an empty garage and a measily 4000$ in their bank account.

You (Female): You are part of the racing group called "Lotus Élise" and you have the objective of getting Cars and Money as well as Prizes won from the competitions.

Frank Benton: Not much is known about this guy, other than he is probably a distant relative of Jack Benton. He wants to win as much as you do, so don't underestimate him nor the other competitors, always be on your toes.

The others (Katie Daggert, Paul McGuire, Ray Smith, Sue O'Neill, Seth Bellinger, Tania Graham): They are the other competitors in the FlatOut competition, they want to win as much as you do, maybe even more, as some may prove themselves to be rather fierce and aggressive, don't take them for granted, pay attention to their behavior, mold a strategy and you'll be fine.

STORY

This game doesn't have a story, although it was planned to have one at some point, involving some clowns, shady suits, and some other memorable people, however, it was canned and they decided to just focus on the gameplay for pretty much the entirety of the series, with the minimum of story in the series being in the rivals's backstories. Such a shame but it could've been better for the long term, can't say for sure, i have mixed feelings about this topic.

TIME TRIALS

It's not wise to simply jump into a track, don't commit the same mistakes as me, be better than me, once you unlock a new Track or unlock the first three tracks in Career Mode by default, try doing a time trial on it/them, to get the feel of the level and the location of shortcuts, as well as what to expect in this level, and the proper times for braking, if you do that, you may end up getting a Personal Best.
Overall, it's a good idea to give the Time Trials a try every now and then, it doesn't hurt and helps you in the long term.

WINNING ISN'T ALWAYS NECESSARY

As much as winning is a good habit, being addicted to it isn't, FlatOut is one of the first Racing Games ever to not punish you for Losing, all you need to is get at least 2nd or 3rd place on the competition, losing might hurt but if you can't do something despite your best efforts, it's best to give up because you have to know your limits.

SMASH BONUS

In FlatOut's races, there's a neat little bonus to be earned if you are a maniac that destroys everything in your path, it's called the "Smash Bonus" and each object you destroy has a specific value, destroy a lot of them to earn some extra green in your pocket, which can prove to be pretty useful in your objectives.
Get as much of them as you can, because every little penny counts, any money is welcome in our line of work, we both know that right? If you can't win a race, try to get at least 2nd or 3rd place and a lot of that "Smash Bonus" in a grand total to still profit, even as a loser.

TIPS AND TRICKS PT. 2
TUNING

If your car turns pretty slow and/or breaks down quick, you gotta go to tuning but get some money (by playing bonus class activities and some easy races).
After getting the money and or with the money in hands, tune your Suspension and Body.

After tuning those completely your car should handle much better and be more resistent to damage! Now if your car is having problems to go fast... Tune your Drivetrain, Exhaust and Engine instead.

After tuning your car with racing quality parts from Hank's Quality Parts Shop and fixing it's issues (Either it being Acceleration/Top Speed or Handling) your car is either very quick or much more responsive to the steering wheel and handles better, now you can beat a race without having to worry about the car's biggest issues! (Like steering in ice and snow with the Roadking)

THE CURSED TIRES AND THE TOP SPEED REDUCTION CAUSED BY DRIVETRAIN

DO NOT TUNE THAT DAMN TIRE, IT WILL MAKE YOUR CAR'S SLIDING UNCONTROLLABLE, IT WILL MAKE YOU STUCK ON A TRACK THAT NORMALLY WOULD BE EASY FOR HOURS AND MAKE YOU BIT YOURSELF HARD ON THE HAND, DO NOT TUNE THAT DAMN TIRE I REPEAT, DO NOT TUNE THAT MOTHERF*CKING TIRE

*sigh* If you have tuned the tires, on the silver and gold class it will be a nightmare! You will have to use every f*cking shortcut you find to avoid wasting time raging and biting yourself hard, That kids is why you should never tune the damn tires in this game...

If you tuned the tires on Bronze, it won't be as unforgiving as the other 2 classes, but a friendly tip would be... Imediately change cars as soon as you pass the bronze class and do not upgrade your tires ever again!

Also, drivetrain related upgrades (which affect transmission) can jeopardize your top speed, how you may ask?

It's simple, take Ranker 1 for example, with all upgrades except Drivetrain it can reach 270 mph, now add the drivetrain upgrades... Uh oh, it got a loss of 40 MPH! So beware of the drivetrain whilst tuning a car with enphasis on top-speed. Now back to it...

DERBY

This is a chaotic wreckfest! Cars smash each other and you might need that Body / Racing Upgrade if your car is weak so it gets stronger therefore you survive and get that cash! Depending on your car, you might want to check the FlatOut wiki on getting a good strat on Derby for your car, also the AI targets nearby vehicles who are with the lowest health, and drive into them with brute strength, If there's none nearby then they either target the nearest vehicle or you, they might try to get you once you have took too many hits so be careful on this mode! Try getting them to hit the borders of the arena or make them take a big ass jump (Arena 3), the AI's stupid on handling jumps so they might take critical damage!
TIPS AND TRICKS PT. 2.5 (Part 1)
WHAT ARE THE BEST CARS OF EACH CLASS? (Part 1)

That answer depends on what you prefer, and your playstyle, and what you tend to favor more or balance things, here is a list of all cars and how they behave:

  • BRONZE

Bullet is as fast as a Bullet and hits like a Bullet, you'll have way less problems on the straights or smashing the competition's asses. However, his acceleration is poor, but that fact is compensated for it's amazing Suspension allowing for Fast and Furious-like Stunts.
However, keep in mind that the car's weakness comes from it's weak acceleration, which in turn, causes it's starting position to be not as good as it could be, and making you have to stay a long time speeding up, and large top speeds come with a price, if you don't brake at the right time, it could very well cost you your bones.
And you'll end up having to balance the car yourself by buying the necessary equipment, and that costs Cash! Cash that could be used to buy better cars after finishing each ranking championships (Bronze, Silver, Gold).

Blockhead is an accelerating hatchback beast, capable of handling itself far better in a corner than Bullet, although still being limited due to the fact that sharp turns can be an alarming problem for it.
However, that comes with a price, his Top Speed is lacking, which can cause some worry considering how the AI is aggressive, that could potentially leave you open to some attacks.

Grinder is the best starter car in this class, he has everything mostly balanced out with a select few bad aspects, which is why it isn't too uncommon to see a lot people start with Grinder as their first car.
BUT............. This car requires patience as it has slow brakes and bad cornering, as well as bad acceleration (even with Upgrades) but top speed comparable to Silver and Gold Class cars.

Blocker, a car for the cheapest person, it's kinda crappy, with little good aspects, it's not as bad as Pepper but still fails in some aspects, and wins on some, for example, when driving in rough conditions, this car won't handle it very well and might be broken in no time, only the most capable of drivers can use this car to their advantage.
In my personal experience, this car proved itself to be quite useful, even in Derby, you just need new strategies and to have a proper racing line, braking time and know when to use the handbrake to not get screwed over, if you want to spare some money, this is a good choice.

Pepper, the car for people who don't take themselves seriously, this car is the worst in the game, it's so hilariously bad that for someone to drive that thing, has to be oblivious to it's weaknesses and competitors, the only reason you would want to drive this car is either for preference (you need a psychiatrist) or for a challenge, like beating the game with pepper.
Update: It's actually not that bad, it has pretty good handling and suspension but subpar acceleration and top speed, you might need to tune the exhaust, engine, suspension, and body to get the most out of it.
Fun fact: Pepper and Blockhead are the only hatchbacks in the entire game.

  • SILVER

Fasthammer can be quite a good car, it's really good to use, and handles far better in the snow than Speedevil, also...
Fun fact: Fasthammer is quite the "chunky lad" having it's weight at a whopping 3600 pounds, literally second place to Bonecracker.
Fun fact 2: This is the only car in FlatOut to be a sedan (4-door car), however as weird as it sounds, the rear car-doors are really hard to get off.
It deforms like hell when it crashes constantly, so get ready to see a car that looks like the child of a smashed piece of aluminum shaped like a ball who somehow had the bedroom shaking with a sedan.

Roadking can be quite the speedy speedy speed boy, even if modest in it's own remarkable and memorable way.
It's only downfall is it's own suspension, having the wheels tucked in close to the bodywork, not being able to handle neither serious jumps or even debrees itself, making you question it's usefulness.
This car is only recommended for those who like to race clean, without destroying the enviroment too much and neither going "Dabru curash ikose" on your opponents, if you want to do that, use Fasthammer as it is one heavy mofo, and doing that in that car can rid you of a headache and throw the opponent off the track, buying you some time.
Fun fact: This car is inspired on a old japanese rallying car, which can explain how it can have an amazing performance but terrible in taking damage.

Overrunner is the first unlockable car and can be quite the good pick as well, it has amazing steering which can prove to be pretty useful and also pretty satisfying, as well as having average top speed and acceleration.
Unfortunately, it is quite a leather-feather in terms of weight, which makes you susceptible to damage from other competitors and making you quite the punching bag, and easily sending you flying with the lightest form of damage from them, which means it's subpar for derby.
It's suspension is extremely sensitive, not allowing you to take risks or make stunts, forcing you to stay on the ground.

Slider is the most balanced car all around but extremely light, and fragile to other opponents, making it susceptible to "Bullying", so the best course of action while driving this car is to avoid other cars like the pest, which isn't too hard considering it's amazing performance and weight-to-power ratio.

Ahh Speedevil, the awful sequel to Bullet (in my opinion) and the most prominent car on the intro, although it's better at cornering now, it's "fast-as-eff-boi" nature can be quite the headache on the corners, making it an Oversteery Mess, if you are a master at correcting Oversteer pick this car.
But this can be quite the ass to control on snowy enviroments, making you have to brake earlier than everyone else, which means you have to be more patient and precise with your controls, if you don't like that, pick either Fasthammer or Overrunner.

TIPS AND TRICKS PT. 2.5 (Part 2)
WHAT ARE THE BEST CARS OF EACH CLASS? (Part 2)

  • GOLD

Machine is, in the words of one of my fellow readers, qxlf: "it is a car that has decent speed, very good acceleration and hits top speed fast and it has very good cornering and because of it's well rounded stats, it is simply the best car in Gold Class". So if you value balanced cars, pick this pony car up, it has nice steering, so it's very comfy to start driving with it.

Trasher, the car that literally welcomes you to the world of FlatOut in the worst appearance possible, is the ideal car for a stuntman, with excellent perfomance, this car won't let you down. It even is a good competitor in Derby competitions, making fast work of other drivers.

Thunderbolt, although lacking in Speed, makes up for it in Acceleration and Handling, making it a good car for people who prefer control over speed.

Blade is a car for someone who doesn't value their own life, being as fast as a knight wielding a blade ferociously, this car is for those who don't lose sleep over lack of handling and cornering power, a sharp monster, incarnate, you will always find either this car or some other car in front of the pack.

Bonecracker, an beast on 4 wheels, this car is one heavy mutha, capable of destroying cars in little pieces, and make the other drivers cry for their mommas with the acceleration and body to back it up, however, if you look past that, you'll soon realize how it's power-to-weight ratio is awful, terrible top speed, unproper suspension conditions, cornering as slow as the most advanced tank on the market.
If you can put up with those terrible conditions in exchange for a little power trip, this car is for you my friend, make the other drivers have their bones cracked!

Ranker 1 is another car that is very well balanced with focus on structural integrity and less focus on some other aspects, for balancing purposes. This is a nice car to drive if you look past it's ugly mug, me personally, i only used this car once in my life, so i can't say for sure if it's worth it. But according to my sources, it would be prefferable to use this car rather than the Machine, because of it's awful body structure.

Either way, what gets the victory isn't the car, the car's just means to an end, what truly matters is you and your skills as well as your witts, your resourcefulness and your ability to think fast during a heated Race, like someone once said: "What makes the car isn't it's cons and pros, it's the driver!"

Think twice before getting any car, just analyze every single one, think the one who suits you or you think that works best for you and then you buy it.

Remember to pay attention to your budget, if you can't afford the car you want, grind some money for a bit, which is what we're gonna discuss next.

MONEY-MAKING STRATS

1 - Spam High Jump several times and Derby too, keep switching between them, aim for the highest scores and the fastest times to beat every single competitor and just keep repeating it for you to win a lot of money.
If you want you can throw a bonus track into the mix.

2 - Replay a race you already beat but on first place, depending on the track's reward, you can get a lot of money that way.

3 - (Warning: Cheat) First type the money count on your cheat engine tab on the search thingy once you selected the .exe's location, now earn any amount of money, now search again for the new count of money, then repeat the process one more time and then there will be only a few select values (or one), then select them/it and then change the value to whatever you desire, (ex: 1000000) then click done and it's practically working, you now have the value necessary to do whatever you want.

4 - Beat races normally, depending on the class you are right now, you can earn a lot of money!

5 - Beat the bonus class races/minigames normally, it usually starts with a low value such as the minimum being 300$ and the maximum being 1500$, but as you progress through the career, the upper classes races/minigames will net you more cash, which in turn will give you more Cash to spend on Upgrades and/or a new Car.
TIPS AND TRICKS PT. 3
CAR DEALER

This place is the only source in the game that provides you vehicles, Honest John's Used Car Dealership, John is the man to go to if you need to get a car.
The prices vary depending on the class so if you recently purchased the game and you are buying a car chances are it's very cheap due to being bronze, after bronze class the prices get a bit more expensive and you might need to get at least 8000$ after winning bronze.
In gold, oh jesus, the prices are just too damn expensive! and you might need 15000$ if you want to get the best performance car in the game in my opinion: Thunderbolt (Forget Blade, that's a oversteery mess).
In time trial and some other non-singleplayer modes the dealer gets you cars for free, you can also change the car's color for other 5 colors depends on what you think suits the car.

RAGDOLL MINIGAMES

The Ragdoll Minigames are part of the bonus class races, it features you going through a stage and in the end of the stage, hold the Nitro button enough so that it can toss you out of the car and into the object ex: Clown, Sculpture like-ladder, Stone like structure, Big dirt I etc... and you repeat the step three times. if you have enough points then you win the amount of Money for being in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place allowing you to use it on Tuning and Buying Cars. if you're good in a certain minigame then you can gain lots of profit from it by playing it for hours or 40 minutes. The Minigames are Unlocked the same way as the Derby Stages.

EXTRA TRACKS

The Extra Tracks are the last type of Bonus Class Races, it is like the normal stages you would see in Bronze, Silver and Gold type of class races. Except it is a bit more difficult but still beatable beating those stages reward you with money from being in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place again, these races are still unlocked the same way as the derby races.

MONEY

Money is the currency for FlatOut, and the reward for winning a race of any class (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Bonus) which allows to buy in-game items like quality parts or a car. Abundant Money allows for you to buy Parts and Cars pretty easily.

CHEATS

If you want to get things early the cheats are there for you, the cheats have to be inputted in the name select screen if you type the cheat and see that it's gone, it's in effect in this profile you can type all the cheats you want and you can still put any name you want.

GIVECASH - Gives the user 5-digit money for use in purchasing cars, and tuning cars.
GIVEALL - Unlocks All Tracks and Cars
Ragdoll - Allows you to use Ragdoll in Derby and Normal Class Races by pressing the nitro button

TRACK TYPES AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM

Snow: Features a Snowy Location in which there's a lap and some very sneaky short-cuts, it's one of the difficult ones to handle, just brake early when going in turns and master the timing of the braking then speed up using nitro when you spot a straight after the turn, then speed up on a moderate quantity and drive past the turns avoiding to fall out of the track, If you see a shortcut, use it, they are one of the key factors to ensure your victory (If you can't do a shortcut then practice on it outside of Career Mode). if you mess up use nitro but don't exaggerate on the dose because if you do the image upside this text shows what happens with Uncareful Drivers.

County Town: Features a Small Town in which the Destructive Rally takes place, Some Times it takes you out of town for a small outside area which then makes a lap that reaches the city again! Powersliding, Braking and Managing Nitro is the most effective way to deal with these type of maps.

Barn and Forests: Barn features a barn in the middle of the lap and it's basically a forest map, Forests has a Forest landscape alongside the ambient. Both of them have dirt terrain so the best way to deal with these maps is using A + D to shift your weight in turns but only use SPACE when it looks like it needs to.

Sandpits (Construction Sites): Sandpits feature dirt terrain most of the times so the techniques from Forests and Barns apply here, The Sandpits's shortcuts are long and fast so make sure to use them but watch out if there's a jump in the end of the shortcut, watch your speed with jumps!

Race Tracks: It's a Normal Racing type of Track that features Asphalt and has a lot of sponsor signs to break and receive bonus money from destroying objects. The best way to deal with them is by Using Space and A + D in turns and using Nitro a lot it works perfectly and allows you to win pretty easily.

And remember... Never give up, never surrender just keep getting up until you finish what you started which is the destructive rally that is FlatOut. Work Hard And you can get this:

can i put cheats in existing profile?

4. Transmission upgrades is speed to acceleration conversion (better acc. at the cost of worse max speed), i think.
5. It feels like tires upgrade gives you better grip, and it can help on road without hard surface.
Angry_Kittencorn Aug 28, 2024 @ 10:35am
Some thoughts from 2024:
1. Grinder has best acceleration in bronze class, so win strategy:
buy Grinder –> buy turbine –> buy whatever you want –> win.
2. Overrunner has best acceleration in silver class, so win strategy:
buy Overrunner after Grinder –> buy turbocharger –> buy whatever you want –> win.
2.1. Overruner has very weak body, so you shoud be careful, when jump and ram. Perhaps, first body upgrade before turbocharger is a good decision.
2.2. Upgraded Overrunner has better acceleration 100km\h –> 180 km\h, than some of the, if not all, unupdraded gold class cars, so you can win all first line races in gold class, even on «proffecional» difficulty.

Really good guide.

Good thing you got the automatic shift car that you wanted.
⍟Tex Jan 25, 2024 @ 11:30am
Yeah no, I just won a couple of races in the oval, where you can floor it in 4th gear, and bought the same car again. I can't be bothered to drive manual in a game, it's a chore.
Lughzi  [author] Jan 25, 2024 @ 10:14am
Learn to drive shift and win races and stunt events until you have enough money to buy the car again. (The game doesn't let you switch driving modes like in 2, the driving mode you choose to a car will be there until you trade cars)
⍟Tex Jan 21, 2024 @ 1:21am
When swapping cars at the dealership, I somehow clicked "manual" on the new car (even though I was pretty sure I chose automatic) and now I am stick with a manual car and no money... Halfway through the game.
