Outward - Basics and 100% Achievements

Guidance for completing the game and obtaining 100% achievements!

Introduction

This guide features a coherent overview of useful best practices for completing the game. It focuses on loot, weapons, fighting tactics, quests and achievements.

Basics

Although the game may seem a bit overwhelming and hard to master at first glance, it can be easily completed without learning bunches of spells, skills or recipes. Even mana is not really needed.

Needs

The most important needs are eating, drinking and resting:

If you do not eat you will starve. Therefore, you should always carry some food with you, but note that food slowly starts to rot. At the beginning, good sources of food are the various kinds laying around in the starting town, bread sold by merchants for 1 silver and the pearlbirds in Chersonese which are easy to kill and mostly hold meat and eggs. But beware of eating raw meat and eggs as they can communicate diseases! To prepare food you can cook it over a campfire (combine 3 woods and set it on fire with a flint & steel). You can also craft travel rations which last for a long time and are necessary for you to travel between maps.

Travel Ration: 2 Food + 1 Salt

If you do not drink you will die of thirst. Water can be stored in water skins which can be found in Cierzo (refer to the achievement section for further assistance) or bought from merchants for 6 silver. Each water skin holds 5 units of water and can be refilled at any source of clean water. Except for the desert region you are perfectly fine with two water skins at your disposal. Drinking water grants you a buff which gives you stamina regeneration and hot weather protection. You will usually find a water source sooner or later - thus you should drink whenever the buff runs out to refresh it.

Do not drink river water - it could cause an indigestion disease.

If you do not rest you will die of fatigue. Whenever you use stamina (sprinting or attacking) your maximum stamina will decrease as well. While this can partly be counteracted with the "Slow Metabolism" perk and potions it is still necessary to sleep regularly to replenish your maximum stamina. Sleeping in tents, houses or inns will grant you a "Well Rested" buff which reduces your stamina consumption for a while and drinking water provides the aforementioned buff.

Sleeping in reusable tents or on bedrolls will make you thirsty and hungry while sleeping in inns or purchasable houses will always fill those needs.

By default you are provided with a world map in Outward, but there is no pointer indicating your current position. Until you get the hang of navigating through the regions you can try to make it work - at least in Cheronese - by using the Conflux Mountain as a landmark in addition to the compass for orientation.

Negative Status Effects

There are a lot of deadly status impairments. Hereinafter, you will find a list of them and how to counteract them.

Infections are mostly contracted by hyenas and will slowly but surely kill you. To cure an infection you have to drink a bitter spicy tea which can be crafted by yourself or bought from merchants for a reasonable price of 8 silver.

Bleeding is something you will regularly have to deal with since it is inflicted by a lot of enemies - including all humanoid enemies who wield Fang weapons. Bleeding will slowly kill you and extreme bleeding will kill you pretty fast. In order to stop bleeding you have to use a bandage which can be crafted out of 2 linen cloth or bought from merchants.

Poison is mostly inflicted by undead enemies and certain types of horrors as well as the swamp water of the Hallowed Marsh region. It will kill you pretty fast or very fast depending on whether it is regular or extreme poison. To counteract poison you need an antidote which is commonly found as loot and can also be bought from merchants.

A Cold can be caught by being exposed to low temperatures for too long and will reduce your stamina regeneration by 15. Note, that an untreated cold can progress to an acute cold which reduces your stamina regeneration by 30. A cold can be cured by drinking a soothing tea.

An Indigestion can be caused by eating raw food or drinking river water. It could make you vomit when eating, resulting in keeping your sensation of hunger. Indigestion can develop into a more severe disease and is cured by drinking a needle tea.

Weather

There are hot and cold temperatures - depending on the region and daytime. Both have their resistance values which can be altered as follows:

Cold weather you can usually come upon in Cheronese during winter time and at night in general. As your body temperature drops you will start to feel cold which increases your chance of catching a cold and will eventually make you freeze to death. To raise your cold weather resistance you can wear the fur armor set which can be bought in Cierzo for 225 silver. Additionally, you can drink a bitter spicy tea and warm up by standing next to campfires.

Hot weather you can mainly come upon in the desert. If your body temperature reaches maximum level you will dehydrate which results in death. To increase your hot weather resistance you can wear appropriate armor like the petrified wood armor set, consumate a cool or weather defense potion, and drink water, as the buff gained from drinking water also provides hot weather defense.

Combat

The basics of combat are not hard to grasp - you can attack, block and dodge. For beginners it is helpful to constantly lock on enemies (Tab key), as it makes it much easier to hit them. You should also drop your backpack during harder fights since you can only do slow rolls while wearing a backpack. Do not worry about your backpack because you will get it back in case of dying!

During the first couple of hours you should never ever approach more than two enemies at the same time since they will most likely grind you to bits. A good strategy is to go for a Fang weapon early in the game (crafting recipes are in the equipment section) since those inflict bleeding on enemies. Bleeding technically lets you win the fight against any enemy which has blood running through its veins - as long as you evade the enemy's attacks.

Furthermore, there is no shame in cheesing enemies with bow and arrow from high positions. With an equipped bow you can either lock on enemies or you can right click once to aim manually. Lastly, you can prepare hard battles beforehand by placing tripwire traps and filling them with weapons or all sorts of spikes.

As your gear gets better fights will become easier but most enemies will always be a threat if you do not play smart and steady.

Equipment and Skills

Finding and crafting adequate equipment for your quests is the hardest part of the game. As soon as you have acquired solid armor, weapons and active/passive skills the game will become easier. It will take a couple of hours, but it will be worth the grind. Try to focus on:

Pearlbird Mask and Master Trader Boots

The pearlbird mask is a rare drop of pearlbirds which live in Chersonese. Its advantage is:

1. Increases movement speed by +20%

You can find master trader boots in crates/chests or buy them from traders. Their advantages are:

1. Increase movement speed by +15%
   
2. Decrease stamina cost by -5%

Both items are useful for travelling long distances and for running away from powerful enemies.

Tripwire Traps

Accumulated tripwire traps allow you to deal huge damage to enemies. You can craft them with:

• 1x Wood
  
• 1x Linen Cloth
  
• 2x Iron Scrap

Wood can be gathered from trees, linen cloth can be looted from bandits, found in chests or obtained by decrafting armor, and iron scraps can be collected by mining iron ore veins. Furthermore, you can buy tripwire traps for four silver from blacksmiths.

Place and fill them with all kinds of spikes or even with weapons (latter is not recommended):



Prepare deadly paths for powerful enemies (you cannot activate them yourself):

Fang Weapons

Fang weapons are relatively easy to craft:

Iron weapons can be found in chests and blacksmiths sell them for 20-25 silver. Predator bones are drops of several enemies like hyeans, and linen cloth can be looted from bandits, found in chests or obtained by decrafting armor.

The advantage of all Fang weapons is:

1. Inflicts bleeding on enemies

Bleeding is one of the deadliest status effects. As soon as an enemy has bleeding its death is almost inevitable. Just run away or hide until your enemy has bled to death. Note, that certain types of enemies (mechanical for instance) cannot bleed. In case you get hit by a weapon which causes bleeding you should instantly use a bandage.

We recommend you to use a Fang weapon until you can craft a tuanosaur greataxe.

Coralhorn Bow

You can craft this bow by combining: Recurve Bow + 2x Coralhorn Antler + Crystal Powder.

There is a free recurve bow inside the purchasable house in Berg and blacksmiths sell them for 100 silver. Coralhorn antlers are loot of alpha coralhorn deers which are recognizable by their red glowing muscles - they live in Enmerak Forest. The last ingredient can be crafted with four mana stones in an alchemy kit.

The bow's huge advantage is:

1. High chance of inflicting pain, cursing the enemy to receive more physical damage

Shoot and hit an enemy with arrows until pain is inflicted and switch to a melee weapon afterwards to increase physical damage. This should always be the first step in fighting enemies.

Sniper Shot Skill and Health Upgrade

Both skills can be learned from the hunter trainer who is located at one of the entrances in Berg.

The advantage of the sniper shot skill is:

1. Increases the damage of arrows

This skill should always be used at the beginning of a fight to lower your enemy's health before killing it with a melee weapon. If the skill is activated with a coralhorn bow you will weaken and permanently injure the enemy before it can retaliate. Try to avoid activating this skill during an ongoing fight.

Tuanosaur Greataxe

This greataxe is one of the most poweful weapons of the game regarding physical damage.

You can craft it by combining: Brutal Greataxe + 2x Alpha Tuanosaur Tail + Palladium Scrap.

Brutal greataxes can be found in treasure chests or bought from blacksmiths for 250 silver, alpha tuanosaur tails are loot of alpha tuanosaurs which live in the centre of Hallowed Marsh, and the last ingredient can be obtained by mining palladium veins or dismantling palladium weapons.

The safest way to eliminate alpha tuanosaurs is shooting them from rocks they can't climb. It is important to separate them from other enemies before starting a fight.

The weapon's advantages are:

1. Deals 44 damage and 50 impact
   
2. Inflicts extreme bleeding on enemies!

The brutal greataxe clearly eclipse all Fang weapons since you can kill several enemies within a few hits or by running away after inflicting extreme bleeding. As a matter of fact you can use the axe until the end of the game.

Stamina Upgrade and Slow Metabolism Passive Skill

Both skills can be learned from the same trainer (Galira the Monk) in Monsoon, the capital of Hallowed Marsh. The stamina upgrade increases your maximum stamina by 40 and the slow metabolism skill extends the time for eating, drinking and sleeping needs:

Trader Backpack and Tents

Trader backpacks can be bought from traders. They allow you to carry a capacity of 100.

Tents are better than improvised bedrolls. You should at least have a simple tent to experience better stamina regeneration as well as protection against the weather. Luxury tents grant you a -20% stamina cost buff for 40 minutes.

First Steps

After starting the game and before dying or sleeping for the first time, try to find and pick:

⋗︎ First Quest

After waking up in Cierzo your task is to keep the lighthouse by gaining a tribal favor or by earning 150 silver in three days. The fastest and easiest way to gain a favor:

1. Leave Cierzo and try to avoid fights - hide or run away from enemies.
   
2. Go south-westwards and find an injured man on the beach.
   
3. Give him a bandage.

In case you are too late you will lose your home resulting in a disadvantage in regaining health and satisfying your needs since you must sleep in inns (25 silver) until you reach Berg.

Achievements

The developers implemented 44 achievements (without DLCs) and you have to complete the game at least three times to unlock all of them. Although only one achievement requires co-op it is highly recommended to play the entire game with a friend. It will make everything significantly easier.

Save Files

The game has a simple save system which allows you to easily make backups for gaining advantage in picking loot, crafting resources and unlocking achievements. You can find the directory here:

This is especially useful for the "They'll Tell Stories About This" achievement since you do not have to start all over again if you die. So do not forget to backup your save files before fighting strong enemies or entering dungeons.

Quest Achievements

There are three different quest lines in the main game. Your path depends on the faction you join - the Blue Chamber, the Heroic Kingdom or the Holy Mission. Once you made your desicion there is no turning back and you won't be able to join the other factions with your character.

Although you will have to make a lot of decisions on your journey you can't reach dead ends in the main quest lines. You may lose cities, allies or important fights - but you won't lose the possibility to complete the four main quests of a faction. However, you can lose the parallel quests and hence three achievements. So try to focus on the parallel quests as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, only the host of a co-op match can unlock quest-related achievements.

Simple Tasks, Crafting, Kills and Skills Achievements

You can obtain these achievements at any time no matter which of the three joinable factions you choose. However, you could block some of them for you or your friend while playing co-op. So make sure to fairly split up actions before progressing too far, e.g. "Home Sweet Home" for buying a house.

Master of Aurai
Finish all 3 quest lines.



Complete all three main quest lines: Blue Chamber, Holy Mission and Heroic Kingdom. Make sure to create a legacy character after completing a quest line.



They'll Tell Stories About This
Finish a quest line without ever being defeated.



You have to beat an entire quest line without dying. Tips:

• Dying before joining a faction counts towards the achievement.
  
• Complete quests as fast as possible. Some are timed and certain outcomes result in death.
  
• If possible, play with a friend who can cover you.
  
• Regularly make backups of your save files and manage them properly.
  
• Getting imprisoned by picking a wrong dialogue option doesn't affect the achievement.
  
  
• Focus on the main story and avoid additional exploration.
  
• Do not be too greedy for loot and stay away from unnecessary fights.
  
• Do not fight ghosts without spiritual varnish.
  
• Drink weather defense potions in winter and desert landscapes.
  
• Always carry several life potions.
  
• The easiest quest line is the Blue Chamber quest line.

Get equipped and leave Cierzo. You will need:

You can find a weapon at the starting area (machete) or behind the big rock next to your lighthouse (quarterstaff). The backpack is inside the lighthouse and a water skin is next to the well at the beach:





Hook, Line and...Harpoon?
Use a Fishing Harpoon to fish.



Catch a fish with a harpoon. You can find harpoons throughout the world and you can buy them from traders for 25 silver. If you are still in Cierzo and if you have not picked the one in the starting area you can find another one at the end of a dock, behind the well:



Just look out for fish in salt water and hold 'F' key to gather one.



Ready for Winter
Reach 20 Cold Weather Def.


Ready for Summer
Reach 20 Hot Weather Def.



Wear armor that increases your cold and hot weather defense to 20. You do not have to focus on these achievements since they will unlock naturally by progressing through the game and finding clothes. In the unlikely case you have missed one you can buy for instance:

You can find gems while mining ores. It is slightly luck-based, but gems are not very rare.

Obtain Firefly Powder from the source.



Travel to Hallowed Marsh and walk through a swarm of fireflies. Lead them to one of the red carnivorous plants to get firefly powder.



Home Sweet Home
Purchase a house in one of the cities.



Purchase one of the three houses in Berg, Monsoon or Levant. They cost 500 silver each.

Gain Mana from the Conflux Mountain.



You can gain Mana in the depths of the Conflux Mountain in Chersonese. But you will have to give up some of your Health and Stamina in exchange. Visiting this place is part of the Blue Chamber quest line.

Use the Throw Lantern skill 5 times.



Equip a lantern and activate the "Throw Lantern" skill. This is a basic skill you don't have to learn.

Restart the game if the achievement doesn't unlock.

Use a Breakthrough Point.



Buy any special skill from a skill vendor.



Exceptional Skill
Learn all the skills and passives you can from one Skill Tree.



You can find vendors who offer sets of skills in all main cities. A tree costs ~2500 silver.

Step 1: Enchanting requires one enchanting pedestral and one, two, three or four enchanting pillars. Both items can be bought from Ryan Sullivan in the Sorobor Academy of Harmattan.

Step 2: Hover over an enchanting recipe to view its conditions. The incense is used for the enchanting pillars and can be crafted. The pillar placement indicates how the enchanting pillars must be placed around the enchanting pedestral. The first letter represents the cardinal direction and the second the distance between the pedestral and the pillar. Examples: NC → north and close, EF → east and far, WF → west and far.

Step 3: Check if all conditions of the enchanting recipe are met and enchant the item.

You can buy a full set of virgin armor from Howard Brock, the blacksmith in Harmattan (in total 1150 silver). The easiest enchantment might be the "Cocoon" enchantment which can be applied on all three armor pieces. Recipe:

• Incense: Chrysalis Incense (2 Dreamer's Root + 1 Elemental Particle - Ice)
  
• Enchantment Pillars: EC (east close), WC (west close)

How to obtain a vampiric weapon:

1. Apply the "Thirst" enchantment on any iron weapon, a recurve bow or a rondel dagger.
   
2. Deal damage with the enchanted weapon until it is "Quenched".

4. Transmutate the weapon to a vampiric weapon.

Easiest way to get the 20 Hot Defense and 20 Cold Defense achievements is "play the tutorial". At one point, the tutorial's red line directs you down a slope to some scorching/frozen caverns, each one containing a full Desert/Winter set respectively. Simply equip the 3 Desert items at the same time to get "Ready for Summer" and swap to the 3 Winter items for the other achievement.

For some reason, the progress for the Encyclopedic! achievement has been stuck at 47 no matter how many new recipes I learn and won't give me the achievement. Anybody else having this issue or at least know how to fix it? Restarting the game or even starting a new game altogether does nothing for it.

Just got all 72 achievements,played mostly Co-op and a some issues came up because of this. Few things to note for your guide for the Three Brothers.
"The stuff of legends" achievement is only for a single person and only for the first time in that world.
"Fruit of the land" is very buggy but achievable by having all the sample items in your inventory at once.
"Hunter of Monsters" only counts for the player who crafted the slayers set.
"Legacy of a master hunter" which is for Zhorn's equipment means you have to get his Dagger, Shield and backpack and have equipped each of them at least once.
"This was a mistake..." which is for pulling the lever inside the Vault of stone to progress deeper, only unlocks for the host.
"Crowd pleaser" which is for winning three bouts in a row at the calygrey arena. Unlocks for both but only the host gets the pet.
"Through fire and flame" is also host only.
