Unlocking / Overview / Skills - Locked Characters Quick Guide

How to unlock the playable characters as well as their overview and skills.

Preface

Achievements, and thus character unlocks, can be attained on any difficulty unless otherwise stated.

Blue Portals have a random chance to spawn at any time or may be triggered by consuming a Lunar Coin at a Newt Shrine/Altar and lead to the Bazaar Between Realms where Lunar Coins can be spent or items reforged.

Celestial Portals begin to appear (predominantly in the frozen map AKA Rallypoint Delta) after returning to your starting map by clearing many stages in a row without losing and lead to the current "final" stage where one may interact with the Obelisk. At the current time there is no known game end outside of Obelisk obliteration or player group wipe.

Artificer

Unlocking

Complete the achievement Pause by spending 10 Lunar Coins at the Bazaar Between Realms to release the character from suspension.

Lunar Coins are a persistent (not lost on death) currency dropped at random by enemies and the Bizarre is accessed either by a random blue portal spawn or by spending a Lunar Coin at a Newt Statue/Altar[i.imgur.com]. Once inside the Bazaar spend the 10 coins at the crystal beside the Newt that contains the character. If in a group this will only unlock the character for the person spending the coins, it is not shared between group members.

If spawning the blue portal through statue interaction rather than random chance you must have at least 11 Lunar Coins (1 to spawn the portal, and 10 to unlock the character). The blue portal will appear if you spawn or randomly get a blue orb prior to charging the teleporter with the blue portal itself appearing once the teleport is charged.

Overview and Skills

Engineer

Unlocking

Complete the achievement Engineering Perfect by completing 30 stages.

Complete 30 stages in total; these stages do not need to be done in any specific manner or in the same run.

Overview and Skills

Huntress

Unlocking

Huntress is now unlocked by default after the Anniversary Update.

Complete the Warrior achievement by clearing 3 stages without dying.

Simply put- get through 3 maps without dying (through the main teleporter, not a blue portal).

MUL-T

Unlocking

Complete the Verified achievement by completing the first stage 5 times.

To further clarify, in five separate runs complete the first stage event by clearing the teleporter, meaning fully charging the device and defeating the boss(es).

Mercenary

Unlocking

Complete the True Respite achievement by obliterating yourself at the Obelisk.

To do this simply continue to clear stages without dying until you return to your first map, whereupon celestial portals will begin to spawn on Rallypoint Delta. Go through a celestial portal and drop down the jump puzzle until you reach a large obelisk. Interact with the obelisk to eradicate yourself and end your run, "beating" the game and unlocking the character.

If unsure which portal to use, the portal will be announced in the ingame chat as a celestial orb spawn, and the portal looks blindingly white compared to its blue portal counterpart.

The celestial portal will always appear after charging the teleporter on Rallypoint Delta after your first loop, denoted by the text "A celestial orb has spawned."

Overview and Skills

Rex

Unlocking

The drop pod you start out in will have a new interactable on it called a Fuel Array. Pick it up and carry it (carefully, though, if you take too much damage at once it will explode and kill you) in your equipment slot until you reach the Abyssal map. Travel to the top of the map using the jump pads and look for the robot covered in foliage. Interact with it to unlock the achievement and the character to play as.

The easiest method to unlock Rex is to play as MUL-T. Using MUL-T's ability to hold secondary active items you simply have to have the fuel cell as your inactive secondary nullifying the chance of damage causing the cell to explode as it does not take damage while as the inactive secondary. This has been patched out as MUL-T no longer falls with a drop pod (but you can still take the fuel array from a teammate's pod if you do multiplayer).

Loader

Unlocking

Loader is unlocked by reaching the Siren's Call stage and breaking 5 eggs that spawn randomly around the stage; when the eggs are broken the Alloy Worship Unit boss will spawn and defeating it will unlock the Guidance Offline challenge and unlock Loader.

Overview and Skills

Acrid

Unlocking

Go to the Bazaar Between Worlds (most easily done by consuming a lunar coin at a lunar altar) and go through the Null Portal. The Null Portal is located in a tunnel illuminated by a green light far down the shaft underneath the Bazaar stage spawn. Activate all 9 Cell Vents in the Void Fields stage and defend them to unlock Acrid. The Cell Vents are most easily found by looking for beams of purple light extending into the sky; you will constantly lose health when outside of the protective Cell Vent bubble and good movement abilities are recommended to survive moving between Cells.

Captain

Unlocking

Beat the game to unlock the character by going through all the stages, going through the primordial teleporter, and then defeating the final boss.

The final boss may be very difficult to beat unless cheesing him through artifact + item farming. The way I did it was using the artifacts that allowed choice of item, monsters dropping items, and double monster spawns with half health, which allowed me to farm the null portal location to get a ton of white and green items.

Complete the Warrior achievement by completing the third teleporter event without dying.

The Heretic

Collect the 4 heresy items in a single run.

Can the Heretic be permanently unlocked or not? I saw he has a log entry but I ran out of time defending the ship so I didn't get it, but I thought he was awesome.

Also I kinda want to see his abilities' descriptions because I couldn't quite figure out how I was applying his debuff for his last attack.
