1V74 08.29 Leeds/Hull - Cardiff Central

As 1984 opened there were fifteen class 46’s remaining in service, working primarily over the North East/South West route. They were allocated to both passenger and freight workings.

On Friday 27th July 1984, 46052 worked the 1V74 08.29 Leeds/Hull to Cardiff Central passenger service. I took this train from Newport to Cardiff Central and bagged the 11.75 mile ‘insect’ basher move as it was known. Being a month away from turning the age of 13 meant very low funds and frequent Cardiff to Newport haulage runs. ‘Another line in the book’ we used to say!

In this real-life scenario that happened in 84’, drive the 1V74 diagram from north of Caldicot to Cardiff Central where you’ll leave the carriages at platform 4 and take 46052 to Canton TMD. 46052 returned north later that evening when it worked the 4E88 1740 Pengam - Newcastle FLT (this scenario can be found here - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1990890605)

46052 only lasted another two months in service. It was stopped at Toton September 19th, taken to Gateshead by September 22nd and finally withdrawn September 30th.
