How to:
Download Cheat Engine.
Open CE and click on process list. Choose the game (it must be running).
Click 'enable speed hack' and choose 'speed' to be e.g. 0.3.
Click 'apply'.
Start playing game for countdown in-game to appear and make sure the game runs in a window and not full-screen (as it will help you a lot with navigation).
Click on 'first scan' => choose ''unknown initial value'' => first scan. (Value type is unchanged at 4 bytes).
Choose scan type ''Decreased value'' and then click 'Next scan'.

You will likely be presented with thousands of addresses and values.
Now then, every second that countdown goes down you press 'Next scan'.

Example: it shows 0:44 seconds, you press 'next scan'. Then wait until it becomes 0:43 second and you press 'Next scan' again.

Do this until you have very few addresses left (or maybe even just 1). If you have let's say 5 addresses and it just doesn't decrease anymore when you click 'next scan', then you should try and find the right address manually (out of those 5).

Click on the red arrow in CE. It will be called ''Copy all selected items to address list''.
When you done that, click on one of the addresses to select it and click under 'active' tab. There will appear a red cross. Now look at the game (as the countdown still running). Does it go from let's say 0:40 second to 0:39? If it doesn't then you have the right address and that means you successfully paused/froze the in-game timer. However if it still decreases, then unfreeze this value (to prevent game from crashing) and choose another one until you see that the address you chose has paused the countdown in-game.

Obviously there are many ways to do this and sometimes you have to choose other options. But that's for you to explore.

Note: This also works for browser games.
