Uther the Lightbringer was the among the first paladins of the Knights of the Silver Hand, an order formed to fight against the Horde during the Second War. They were extremely effective in combat against Gul'Dan's death knights and their necromantic minions, and their healing arts proved invaluable throughout the war effort. Uther himself was distinguished by his victories, and was named the "Lightbringer" by fellow paladin Turalyon. Everywhere he went, he was the embodiment of what it was to be an upstanding servant of the Light. Everyone would come to respect the man, and among them was the young prince Arthas Menethil of Lordaeron, who became an apprentice paladin under Uther's tutelage. Arthas and Uther were quelling orcish raiders when the threat of an undead scourge started to rise. They, along with the mage Jaina Proudmoore, found plagued grain as the culprit. Any who ate food made from the grain turned to the undead. In a dark twist of fate, Arthas, in his rage against the dreadlord Mal'Ganis, decided to purge the people of the city before they turned as a mercy killing. Horrified at this decision, Uther and Jaina turned away, leaving Arthas to his fate. This led Arthas to the continent of Northrend, where he obtained the runeblade Frostmourne and became a servant of the Lich King. He soon returned, and to Uther's shock, Arthas killed his own father, King Terenas Menethil II. The king was cremated and ensconced within a magical urn. Arthas and his undead army came back to claim the urn, as it was necessary to revive the necromancer Kel'Thuzad. Uther, with a heavy heart, stood in defense of his late king. After a short battle, Uther the Lightbringer was killed by his own pupil. His remains were reclaimed by the Alliance and a tomb was erected in Sorrow Hill of what then became the Western Plaguelands. High Priest Thel'danis, an elven priest, acts as caretaker to the tomb and erected a barrier to prevent undead from attacking the area.

"Here lies Uther the Lightbringer. First Paladin - Founder of the Order of the Silver Hand. Uther lived and died to defend the Kingdom of Lordaeron. Though he was betrayed by his most beloved student, we believe that his spirit lives on. He continues to watch over us, even as the shadows close in around our ruined land. His light is the light of all humanity - and so long as we honor his example, it shall never fade. -Anonymous"
