Description
Long ago, the Old Gods flew through the void and arrived on Azeroth. Together, they established the Black Empire and quickly forced their dominance over the world, enslaving the native elementals, in an attempt to corrupt the world-soul of Azeroth. The Titans discovered Azeroth and were horrified by the corruption they found upon the surface. Fearing their direct presence would destroy Azeroth, they instead waged indirect war upon the Old Gods. They killed the Old God Y'Shaarj, but the resulting catastrophe wounded the planet so severely that the titans decided to imprison N'Zoth, Yogg-Saron, and C'thun instead. Defeated but not deterred, the ever-patient Old Gods continue to exert their corrupting influence upon the world, slowly gathering their strength to rise again. C'thun lay dormant in his prison beneath the sands of Silithus in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. Several times, this temple has been disturbed: first, by trolls who had driven an insectoid race called aqir into the area. C'thun's influence corrupted them into the qiraji race, turning them into new servants. Thousands of years later, the night elves happened upon the qiraji, sparking the War of the Shifting Sands. Countless silithid and qiraji swarmed out of Ahn'Qiraj. It took the combined efforts of the night elves and the green, red, and blue dragonflights to drive them back and imprison them once again. The Scarab Wall was erected as a magic barrier to contain the seemingly undefeatatable insectoid threat. However, the Scepter of the Shifting Sands was created as a backup plan to re-open the gates, just in case. Fandral Staghelm, the night elven commander entrusted with the scepter, was traumatized by the war as it caused the loss of his son. He shattered the scepter, hoping to never see the gates open ever again. During the vanilla era, C'thun stirs from within his prison, and the gates need to be opened; the scepter reforged. Through great effort spanning the entire planet, adventurers reforge the scepter and gain entry into Ahn'Qiraj, taking the war into the Temple. Here, we gaze into the eye of the Old God of madness and chaos. Here, we stare into the eye of C'thun.

"Death is close..."
"You are already dead."
"Your courage will fail."
"Your friends will abandon you."
"You will betray your friends."
"You are weak."
"You will die."
"Your heart will explode."

Recorded in World of Warcraft at 30 FPS and optimized to keep filesize reasonably low.

This is Version B of the wallpaper. Look for Version A for a different angle, or the Whispers version for music and sound.

My thanks to Rucus, without him this footage wouldn't be possible! Let's enjoy vanilla World of Warcraft Classic!
