Speeding up Sunless Skies via Cheat Engine

Quick guide to set up Cheat Engine to speed up Sunless Skies gameplay.

How-To

This will guide you in modifying the speed at which Sunless Skies run. If you feel your train engine could use an upgrade this is for you.

The first step is downloading Cheat Engine from their website[www.cheatengine.org]. As of writing the latest release is 6.8.2.

This program allow us to tinker with our games. For this guide, we will only be using the built-in "speedhack" function which can be quickly set up, as desired. There is no need use the more advanced functions of CE.

Make sure Sunless Skies is running, Alt-Tab as needed, then open the application (or process) of the game in Cheat Engine like this:




You may use the quick shortcut to directly apply a speed modification and be done (in the example the game is speed by 50%) OR follow the guide along further to setup up more detailed hotkeys.



Setting up hotkeys. For this example we will use Shift+S as a toggle in-game and Shift+1 to set a default speed increase of 30% which is the very highest default speed increase I would recommend for a beginner to Sunless Skies.


Feel free to experiment and set up more advanced hotkeys.

Known Issues

• Certain areas of the game could become unnavigable, or outright broken due to conflicts, while the speedhack is enabled. I recommend using lower speed settings in those areas or turning it off temporarily. Shift-S is used to do so in this guide.

Hey, so I'm trying to do this on a mac. Cheatengine works fine, but the sunless skies file never show up under the process list. How would I fix this?

Does this still work OK for the latest version of the game?

Yes. Not the music though. If that is an issue one could set an hotkey only for faster travel by checking the square that say "stop on release" in the last picture.

This also increases the speed of npc ships, enemy and friendly. That's unavoidable, I imagine?

If you do make the speed negative, make sure to watch out for time paradoxes.
