Witcher 3: Miss Me With That Missable Content

My path to missing the least content in a single playthrough.
HUGE SPOILERS permeate the entirety of this guide, this is probably good as a basis for a second or third playthrough but not the first.
By following this guide you will avoid missing quests, items, and objectives.
However, there are things you must miss as they are either exclusive or impossible, these will be made clear in the guide.
Within the guide is also every missable achievement (ones that are impossible to complete after having completed too many things)

This guide is being developed with community feedback so it will not be entirely limited to my research and experience.
There are many failable objectives I completed without noticing they could be failed, so keep an eye out on all your quests for failed objectives as you go.

Before doing anything make sure to simulate a Witcher 2 save for a new game.
(New Game -> Simulate Witcher 2 Save -> follow the guide from there)

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The structure of the guide is organised in legs tailored to different areas of the game and progression, and timeless sections which can be done at any time in a particular area.
Bold quests will fail if you ignore or leave them once started or nearby.
Underlined quests are unmarked so you will have to look them up in order to know where and what they are as the names will never show up in your journal.

To follow the guide is to follow the procedure outlined in the legs very closely.
Most of the sequences in the legs are very necessary, in ways that are hard to predict,
Some paths are just as valuable as others so you will have a few choices outlined in the legs.

Make sure to be mindful of the Timeless section quests as you can miss/fail them by walking past or being careless. Certain quests can be played in different ways that can lead to missing content (other quests or loot) so consult the guide on the best method.

Ideally, by the end of the playthrough:

• No failed quest objectives
  (WIP: comment any objectives you fail to improve the guide, check wiki for these too)
  
• No failed quests
  
• No missed quests (4 exceptions detailed below)
  
• No missed places of power
  
• No missed items tied to quest areas (or item codes provided)
  
• All Gwent cards available
  
• All paintings and trophies for your estate (except prison poster depending on choice)
  
• Seen all romance scenes and have done It Takes Three to Tango
  
• Cerys is queen of Skellige
  (Alternative to support Hjalmar is not possible without forfeiting a place of power)
  
• All defenders at Kaer Morhen
  OR Keira dies and have done A Final Kindness
  
• Dikjstra or Emhyr rules
  OR Radovid wins, and you cannot do Reasons Of State (and miss the achievement for that playthrough)
  
• Ciri is alive, a witcher, and stays at your estate
  OR Ciri is emperor, visits your estate, and have done Faithful Friend
  
• Olgierd is saved (O'Dimm ending item codes provided)
  
• Anna lives Syanna lives, Detlaff dies, Regis flees Tossaint
  OR Anna lives, Syanna dies, Detlaff lives, Regis stays in Tossaint, and have done The Perks of Being a Jailbird

The quest What Lies Unseen is totally missed because it occurs only as a bad result to other quests and results in a net loss in total quests count (Unseen Elder path)

The following quests each give an increase in total quests but are reasonable to not want to do for story reasons, so are always given as options in the guide:

• A Final Kindness (if Keira dies)
  
• Reasons Of State (if Dijkstra is not shoved - required for the next one)
  
• Faithful Friend (if Ciri becomes empress)
  
• The Perks of Being a Jailbird (if Syanna dies)

Throughout a playthrough are event quests (called Unmarked Quests by the wikis) which don't count as quests in the journal but nonetheless can be missed, so, whenever you enter an area interact with every questgiver you encounter and complete the interaction there and then, but do not straight away do every quest you take from the bounty boards as you can potentially miss quests that trigger in other areas
(namely progressing Following the Thread means you will miss Flesh For Sale, and The Four Faces of Hemdall has more options if done prior)

If you want to play nice like in TW2, try not to kill any trolls you can talk to along the way as there will be plenty of rabid trolls to kill which have the same loot.
Also try not to draw your sword in human encounters, sometimes you can just knock them out with fists.

This game is broken: It's important to note that there are a few major glitches that can happen in your save that can permanently screw up getting 100% completion in any of these categories such as:
- map markers not updating properly
- quest flags being modified post-completion
(sometimes resulting in quests failing after being completed)

You need to be prepared to handle these quirks of the game.
The most troublesome things for me seem to be bandit camps, abandoned sites, and hidden treasures as a few of them seem to stick around long after they have been cleared in completely inconsistent ways.
The best method may be to place saves and do POI methodically at the earliest stage so if there are issues you can always go back and try again (but won't be going back too far).
Sometimes what you're missing is a single loot container (even for things like monster dens or bandit camps).
Also do not use the console command to reveal all POI because that tends to spur on these issues.

Legs are the 'Walkthrough' section of the guide, and the guide's main purpose.
Follow the legs very closely, things contained within the legs must be done in a certain order.
Refer to Timeless and Objectives every now and then.

Before doing a quest of your own volition check to make sure it's mentioned in the timeless or safe section, or otherwise not mentioned further in the legs. As there may be times where you can do a quest but it would be hard to tell you explicitly not to do them at all those possible points.

NOTE: Any witcher upgrade diagrams you find may break the related quests.
Scavenger Hunt: Gear Upgrade Diagrams quests are missable if you find related diagrams without using the maps to start the quest first of (if you don't follow quest objectives strictly).
There is no natural way to align getting the diagrams in the right order with following the legs so try to do them in order after you've done enough of the legs to make that feasible. (so take note of where the scavenger diagrams are in order to avoid them until you have the quests proper, take the earliest opportunity to buy the scavenger maps)

White Orchard & Vizima

Before doing anything make sure to simulate a Witcher 2 save for a new game if you want to talk to Voorhis to get access to Ghosts of The Past

If you have already started your game and have not yet completed Imperial Audience:
You can use commands so you didn't need to have had the talk

Pick up the Crystal Skull in front of you when the game begins after killing the ghouls

During The Beast of White Orchard
Before talking to Vessemir after obtaining the buckthorn and investigating the griffin's nest:

You don't need to have done:

• A Frying Pan, Spick and Span
  
• Contract: Devil by the Well
  
• Dirty Funds
  
• Deserter Gold
  
• Temerian Valuables
  
• Scavenger Hunt: Viper School Gear

You do need to have done:

Then make sure to play gwent with the Oxenfurt scholar before talking to O'Dimm

Go to Vizima
If you started the game using simulate witcher 2 save:
Say to Voorhis that Letho is alive.
Say you went with roche and that you went to rescue triss for extra content.
Also Sile de Tansarville will appear later in the story briefly if you do not say she died.

Drop the towel from your inventory before choosing clothing, you can then pick it up once you've chosen clothing to keep the towel.

You can enable this fact for small bit of extra content in Oxenfurt:

  - Axii the guy who offers you the pass, leave the conversation without taking the pass
  - Offer to help his brother-in-law for the pass

Do Hazardous Goods (Part 1)

Go to Crow's Perch, complete the quest Ciri's Room
Make sure to play gwent with the Baron now, ask him about the Child's Doll
And do the rest of Gwent: Velen Players

Do part of Family Matters
- Return to baron after information gained from the botchling, go to Oxenfurt to give the doll to Tamara and return to the baron, do not try to find Anna yet.

Do part of Ladies of the Wood
- Go as far as the point at which you have given back Johnny's voice, do not progress the quest any further (don't follow Johnny to the orphanage)

Do A Towerful of Mice
Do part of A Favor for a friend
- Return the package to Keira but do not 'wait' (the orange dialogue), instead leave the dialogue for now.
Don't finish this quest to start For the Advancement of Learning yet.

The quest Forefather's Eve is now available.

Note: A few lines of dialogue will change in the Hearts of Stone DLC after completing the main game's final quest. If you intend to start this DLC early, now would be a good time to do it.

It is advised to do Hard Times at this point.

During The Lord of Undvik:
- Talk to Harald Houndsnout inside the ship. He asks you to bring him twine and nails:

1. Collect the nails from some planks on the floor in front of the sawmill (last building you see before entering the cave with Hjalmar).
   
2. Collect twain (you should already have it in your inventory as it's a common crafting material).
   
3. Don't go inside the cave yet. Instead return to Harald Houndsnout in the ship and give him the items.

Now is a good time to do all the side quests and POI and make a save, the next legs will involve critical choices. (A good quest to do here would be The Four Faces of Hemdall)

- The sword "Gwestog" may be dropped by one of the witch hunters (make sure to loot them)

- Visit the spot near "Crippled Kate's" before going to the house north-west of the "Southern Gate" to avoid walking the same way twice

Acquire all gwent cards available in the base version of the game.

   For an extra quest, or if you want the Ciri Empress ending:

6. Finally, talk to Avallac'h and do Through Time and Space
   - Make sure to use the Place of Power in the second world

If you didn't shove Dijkstra aside during Blindingly Obvious:

- Unequip your swords and your crossbow before going on the ship to keep them during the upcoming fight
- If you intend to get the Ciri Empress ending you must side with Roche, otherwise side with whoever you want.

Assassin of Kings

Take part in the assassination of King Radovid.

During Battle Preparations

1. Do The Sunstone (use the place of power and collect the hidden treasure in the ancient crypt)
   
2. Do Veni Vidi Vigo
   
3. During Child of the Elder Blood
   - Tell Ciri: "Go for it."
   - Tell Ciri: "Yeah. I'll go with you."
   
4. Do Skjall's Grave

- Before starting the battle, you can find Ciri practicing her magic by following the path into the hills that starts next to where the Quartermaster is based

1. Speak to every person at the auction,
   
2. Guess the correct Van Rogh (Portrait of a Merchant) for Yaromir. This unlocks the quest Avid Collector.
   
3. Purchase the viper witcher diagrams,
   
4. Do not lose in gwent or you'll miss a card.
   
5. Buy every auction item.
   

   Shopaholic

   Buy all the items put on the block at the Borsodis' Auction House.
6. Make sure to 'Dismantle' Count Romilly's Figurine. This unlocks the quest A Dark Legacy.
   
7. During Open Sesame: Breaking and Entering
   - Go to Hugo's house first

If you're planning to lose the gwent match during Dead Man's Party, spend your money on the Runewright (or something else) as you'll forfeit 5% of your gold.

During Dead Man's Party

When Vlodimir removes Geralt's facial hair, it will disable dynamic beard growth even though the end result is a clean shaven face. You can re-enable it by visiting a barber and selecting the "Shaved head and a ponytail" option.

• Find the Cow gwent card in the upper portion of the barn
  
• Do every event at the wedding before confronting O'Dimm
  
  • Lose the gwent match (choose to do this first or last depending on what dialogue variations you want)
    
  • Herd the pigs without using Axii

  Let the Good Times Roll!

  Participate in all the activities at the wedding

If you want to give yourself the letter Vlodimir writes (it's unobtainable by normal means)

Provoke all Iris von Everec's Nightmares into fighting you at the same time and defeat them

You may want to start Blood and Wine now for some special dialogue with Regis regarding the mark a little bit into the DLC. (But don't complete the DLC until you've completed the main game story)

During Whatsoever a Man Soweth

1. Talk to Shani
   
2. Do the Oxenfurt Academy optional objectives
   
3. Return to Shani and play Gwent
   
4. Go to the temple of Lilvani
   
5. Challenge O'Dimm

- In the mirror world:

1. Go straight and up the path through an overpass/archway of trees
   
2. Get the venomous sword from the red pedestal
   
3. Continue right, go around the mansion into a cave, quickly loot it
   
4. Go back into the mansion, go straight through and around, don't interact with any mirrors
   
5. Break the wall near the fountain using aard, interact with the fountain

Move on to Blood and Wine if you have completed the main game story.

During Envoys, Wineboys
Achievement can only be done up to this point!

David and Golyat

Kill Golyat with a crossbow bolt to his eye.

During The Beast of Toussaint
- Spare the Shaelmaar
- During the party, find the lost ring and give it to the crying woman on the bridge
- After the attack go back to the greenhouse and loot Milton's corpse

Do Warble of a Smitten Knight
- Enter the Knight's tournament as "Geralt of Rivia" (not the other name), and agree to the duel with Anseis
- Finish the tourney (flawlessly)

A Knight to Remember

Obtain a flawless victory in all the competitions during the knights' tourney.

Start Turn and Face the Strange by going to the center of Beauclair and give the delivery boy a tip

During La Cage Au Fou
- Search the whole wight's lair and lift the curse (eat without spoons)

Don't do Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away yet

During No Place Like Home
- Help Marlena. This unlocks the quest The Hunger Game where she will give you a trophy you can display in your estate

There are 3 more trophies you can get for:
- Winning all the fistfights (including Raging Wolf)
- Beating the Skellige Gwent Championship
- Returning the balls in Goodness Gracious Great Balls of Granite to the art curator

• Aquire the ribbon from the flint girl (gwent or purchase it) ->

  Serve time in Toussaint.

- Go to the bootblack w/ regis
- If you saved Syanna

• Speak to Syanna, be sympathetic
  
• Speak to Damien, don't tell him about the note
  
• Attend the ceremony, tell Anna about the note
  
• Say positive things about Syanna

  Last Action Hero

  Be decorated with the Order of Vitis Vinifera.

- Put on the mandrake collecting items

These achievements are missable in that by 100% completion if you don't have them yet you can't get them, but don't pertain to any particular area of the guide

Even Odds

Kill 2 monsters you have a contract on without using Signs, potions, mutagens, oils or bombs.

This is missable because there is a finite and non-repeatable amount of contract monsters you can kill.

Fist of the South Star

Defeat an opponent in a fistfight without taking any damage.

This is missable because you cannot enter fist fights you have already won, and there is a finite number of them.

I Wore Ofieri Before It Was Cool

Collect all available Ofieri armor and horse gear, and at least one Ofieri sword.

1. As the related quest is known to be bugged, you should get the first diagram from Zuetzer Castle before talking to the Ofieri merchant.
   
2. Buy the Ofieri blinders, Ofieri saddlebags and either the Ofieri decorated saber or the Diagram: Ofieri saber (has to be crafted) from the Ofieri merchant at Upper Mill.
   
3. Race against him to get the Ofieri stock saddle
   
4. Do From Ofier's Distant Shores
   
5. Go to a master armorer (e. g. Yoana in Crow's Perch) and craft the 4 pieces of armor.
   
6. Have all these items in your inventory at once.

Unseen Elder's Lair

This is only available after doing Blood Simple and before returning to Regis
Using Debug Console Extensions mod and the Debug Console...

NOTE: Fast travel is blocked during these quests
To quickly get to the lair entrance type "xy(-643, -1886)" in console twice in a row.

To get into the Unseen Elder's lair to collect the Han Geidth set:

• Use the key Oriana gave you on the entrance to the Unseen Elder's lair (Near the bottom of the southwestern lake next to a place of power)
  
• Go through the water on the left, loot that chest
  
• When approaching the large open area, stop near the opening and angle yourself to the right facing the little opening on that wall then type "phase(27)" in the console
  
• go to the left until you reach a drop, go down and collect that chest
  
• continue going down and around and you'll find a little fort, loot all the mage's papers and chests here
  
• Use the reverse waterfall to walk onto the ceiling and loot the chest and the other mage's papers
  
• Loot the mage's corpse and nearby for the Cantata unique blade (This is where you would normally fight the protofleder)
  
• Fight the protofleder, spawn it using:
  spawnfrompath(dlc\bob\data\quests\main_quests\quest_files\q704_truth\characters\q704_protofleder.w2ent)

In order to escape the lair and return to Regis type "xy(-314,-955)" in the console twice in a row.

@Rickew, in the 'Legs' section it says

NOTE: Any witcher upgrade diagrams you find may break the related quests.
Scavenger Hunt: Gear Upgrade Diagrams quests are missable if you find related diagrams without using the maps to start the quest first of (if you don't follow quest objectives strictly).
There is no natural way to align getting the diagrams in the right order with following the legs so try to do them in order after you've done enough of the legs to make that feasible. (so take note of where the scavenger diagrams are in order to avoid them until you have the quests proper, take the earliest opportunity to buy the scavenger maps)

It's unlikely that I'll ever do another 100 percent run, but if I ever do, rest assured I will document a lot of minor run information here in the comments that comes mostly from the wiki to further enhance this guide, however I'm probably not going to. Sorry.

Just noticed I can't edit my comments, but here is that edit anyway, some of the minor details are in which side quests you should complete before others, because it sometimes makes a difference, and other times doesn't. Sometimes you can't even get a side quest until you've done something else first, and often times, you'll think you missed it or failed it without knowing, this was evident for me when doing the die pit racists (racists of novigrad in the dye pit alleyway), and also in some other side quests that I cannot remember the names of.

I would have more input on about the little details that somewhat matter for this guide to be more accurate, however I didn't really think about it, however if anyone were to do a run like mine, where you try to 100 percent everything except armor and swords (this includes signposts, books, quests, gwent etc etc), then you'll notice all these little details if you religiously read the wiki. They do make some difference in the way you'll follow this guide and do the run in general.

Also, I am not a good reader, but if its not mentioned, in the current version of TW3, the guide should mention that you should not collect treasure hunt items before getting the quest for that upgrade/item schematic, or else the quest will never start and you cannot fix it. I'm currently way too far in to go back now, and I've got 2 or so treasure hunts for the witcher gear that I cannot complete because I did not start them. This really only will matter to you if you're using the PoTP mod though, else I would have never known.

Not sure when this became a thing, but in my run I did notice that there is at the very least now, a literal fork in the quest lines. When you do advancement of learning, and don't tell kiera to go to kaer morhen, and either already have or then get the brothers in arms (velen) quest, it will fail, making the 100 percent run of witcher literally impossible, and that is the earliest occurance of why (afaik).

Hi! Great job, however, I just discovered a small conflict in the "King's Gambit" quest, which is not covered in your guide. Well, on the wiki we can read that:

"Choosing Cerys, and then letting Arnvald escape or die at the beach, is the only way to unlock access to a few more minor things - getting the key to the locked chest in the servants' room, the Heroes of Skellige: Broddr book, as well as the actual letter item, which isn't otherwise added to the inventory. However, this route also comes with a failed objective ."

Do you have a solution on how to get the book and not fail objective?
