PGO-7(RPG-7 sight) guide +M136/72 tips
Από Searing Star
Guide on the PGO-7 for the RPG-7 when playing as Russians, for it's easy and really useful and I didn't see a readily available guide on steam. Also I add some other stuff I found out/tips. WIP>PGO7 info is generally here, just adding more info on other launchers later.

PGO-7 Aiming
[For brevity the acronyms LAT & HAT will be used standing for light/heavy anti-tank, HEAT is High Explosive Anti-tank, HE is High Explosive]
TL;DR at the bottom of this section
The PGO-7 is a very handy and useful sight in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. Though, as with anything with a lot of lines and numbers, it can all look jarring and you don't know what is what.
Please reference the screenshot below.

Here we see many parts (from top to bottom)
1. The two pluses+ at the very top
2. a bunch of squares (which is apparently for windage/something advanced, not important)
3. Numbers along the left side of the squares
4. a center bar with 1 - 1,5 - 2 with a P
5. and a range finder that starts at 2 and goes to 10, with 2,7 below it.

There are three ammos types in total for the RPG-7V2 (in Arma 3 in RHS mod there are around 5)
[By the way these are the assumed ammo types]
  • [HE] OG-7V - a big 40mm grenade (not rocket propelled) HE Fragmentation round - This comes with LAT & HAT in every faction sporting the RPG-7
  • [HEAT] PG-7VL - 93mm rocket propelled HEAT round - comes with LAT and some HAT in IMF and Insurgents.
  • [Tandem HEAT] PG-7VR - 105mm rocket propelled Tandem HEAT round - Comes only with HAT (it's also comically long)
The first two of the list (HE, HEAT) use the same ranging which is the numbers 2,3,4,5 along the left side of the sight. These are in hundreds of meters

The two pluses+ at the top are the 50m and 100m range, AKA the OH [Family Understandly Concerning Klingon] range
The 1, 1,5, 2 range is for the Tandem HEAT

Also in hundreds of meters, the pluses+ at the top are very close and hard to get an exact ranging range.
This round is very heavy thus it only has a 200m maximum range. Also, as another note, do to the high amount of drop, this round can easily go over and under targets (this can also cause hits on top armor making penetration easier)

Tandem HEAT, because of the massive amount of drop when firing at targets within 100 meters - Aiming with the boxes are the best way hit the target, the video below showcases this.
TL;DR - 2-5 thing is HE and HEAT, 1, 1,5, 2 is tandem or long round
Next section will be on range finding
Rangefinding with the PGO-7
Image above shows information on the various parts of the range finder and how it is utilized.

The way these range finders work is having set ranges along a curve, so the farther the contact, the close the two lines on the range finder merge. taking the bottom(at tracks/wheels) and top (roof, excluding commander guns, and major optics) is usually good enough to get you an estimated range.
The rangers are in hundreds of meters, and have numbers at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, with tiny marks in between for 300, 500, 700, and 900 meters.

Human based rangefinders are usually set to 1.4 meters tall, however this scale is for vehicles that are 2.7 meters tall. Note, that because it's to around the height of common vehicles (2.7 meters), it's inherently inaccurate. The Abrams is 2.4 meters tall and the Bradley is 3 meters tall, so you will need to take that into account, and know that this isn't perfect.

But the question is, what if the vehicle is within 200 meters?
Then pray it's not looking your way, also that's great for tandem rounds!
This image shows that within 100 meters, the Abrams and Bradley fit within 3 boxes horizontally
This is where things get a hare bit interesting, the image above shows that if the vehicle is facing you and takes 3 squares it's approximately 100 meters away (lower plus+, or the 1 mark for tandem)
Within 75-25 meters they will begin to fill up the boxes, which for HE & HEAT just shoot with the plus+ and you'll hit.

this image shows a destroyed striker at 750 meters, too far to accurately hit
M136/72
For the M136/72 (the sights are similar) you can use the sights themselve to guesstimate the range to your target.
Place the sights on the vehicle
  • At roughly 100 meters T72 & BTRs facing you, it will fill the three prongs of the sight
  • At roughly 100 meters T72s perpendicular to you, the sights will cover 2/3 of the tank, or the turret will barely touch the three prongs.
  • At Roughly 200 meters T72s & BTRs facing you, they will fit into two prongs of the sight.
  • At Roughly 200 meters T72s perpendicular to you will will the sight (or two prongs on the turret)
  • At 300 meters and more, it becomes a guessing game because they will be farther between the prongs
Also, sorry if they're not called prongs, not sure what they're called
Here is a video to showcase this off
Also some zoomed in images to give a better idea, and with BTRs

Thanks for this info. The provided videos are very useful to reinforce what the text says. (And the music mix isn't bad either!)

Oh hey, so I just checked this apparently has 4/5 Searing Stars (MY ARM) and is still on the Squad guide front page when I opened it, so I'll add that bino information and look for other optics that have a similar range finding system

You just changed my whole Squad experience. Thank you! On a side note, this guide also works with the Russian field binoculars, which are scaled for human-sized targets, as is the Russian sniper rifle. But with the Sniper rifle, you use the gauge to find the range, then use X to set your sights to the range. Then just shoot directly at them.

thank you sir, didn't mean any disrespect BTW I was just confused and not even from the slap it on target part. Appreciate you!

updated the guide with images and hopefully something better than "slap it on your target"

I'll take the image and zoom in on the range finger, it's that curved object in the sight

I'm confused on the slapping the rangefinder on the vehicle portion. SL's dont always make me a fireteam leader to rangefind myself and I'd like to be able to use this scope better. Could you further explain how to simply use the rangefinder? I'm confused. Sorry and thank you for making this!
